A Sociological Approach to Acquired Brain Injury and Identity (Hardcover): Jonathan Harvey A Sociological Approach to Acquired Brain Injury and Identity (Hardcover)
Jonathan Harvey
R4,468 Discovery Miles 44 680 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Inspired by the author's personal experience of sustaining acquired brain injury (ABI), this path-breaking book explores the (re)construction of identity after ABI. It offers a way of understanding ABI through a social scientific lens, promoting an understanding that is generated through close engagement with the lives and experiences of ABI survivors. The author follows the everyday experiences of six male survivors and critically investigates their identity (re)construction after their ABI. As well as demonstrating identity (re)construction after ABI, the experiences of the participants allow the reader to investigate neurological rehabilitation from their perspective. This book suggests that rehabilitation after ABI is often a continual process that extends beyond the formal, medically prescribed period. It also shows that identity after ABI is often (re)constructed in an unpredictable way; a way that emphasises the importance of reciprocal support and the uncertainty of future life. A Sociological Approach to Acquired Brain Injury and Identity is essential reading for academics and students from a range of social scientific disciplines with an interest in biographical or ethnographic research methods. This book offers a social scientific view of rehabilitation and as such is also essential reading for academics, students and professionals with an interest in health and illness, particularly neurological rehabilitation and brain injury rehabilitation.

William Thornton, Frederick Bonato
R5,718 Discovery Miles 57 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book focuses on all of the major problems associated with the absence of body weight in space, by analyzing effects, adaption, and re-adaptation upon returning to Earth, using sound scientific principles embedded in a historical context. Serious problems for space travelers range from Space Motion Sickness (SMS) to recently discovered ocular effects that may permanently impair vision. Fluid loss and shifts, spinal changes, and bone and muscle loss are also all results of weightlessness. Starting with a brief definition and history of weightlessness, the authors then address in detail each problem as well as the countermeasures aimed at alleviating them. In some cases, alternative hypotheses regarding what can and should be attempted are also presented. As plans for long-term missions to the Moon and Mars develop, it will be essential to find countermeasures to weightlessness that are effective for missions that could span years.

Sexual and Reproductive Neurorehabilitation (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Mindy L. Aisen Sexual and Reproductive Neurorehabilitation (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Mindy L. Aisen
R2,916 Discovery Miles 29 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This well-written text thoroughly addresses two quality of life issues in patients with a variety of neurological disorders: sexual and reproductive function. The de vasta stating effects of a variety of neurological diseases are well known to both the lay and medical communitIes, and are treated in numerous texts. However, as we continue to experience therapeutic breakthroughs in the tields of neurology and rehabilitation medicine, physicians and patients must become more aware of the issues discussed in this text. It is particularly important, as emphasized throughout the chapters, that the physician or therapist initiate conversations with the patients concerning both the possibility of parenting a child, as well as the ability of the patient to enhance his/her sexual functioning. Commonly in the patient who is otherwise perfectly normal, there is a reluctance to discuss these topics and couples often feel embarrassed to initiate a conversation with their physi cians. This reluctance to initiate a discussion is even more apparent in patients with a variety of neurological disorders, in which there are overriding fears concerning both function and survival, as well as deep concerns about their own attractiveness, and their sexual and repro ductive ability."

Neuro-Robotics - From Brain Machine Interfaces to Rehabilitation Robotics (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Panagiotis Artemiadis Neuro-Robotics - From Brain Machine Interfaces to Rehabilitation Robotics (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Panagiotis Artemiadis
R5,851 Discovery Miles 58 510 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Neuro-robotics is one of the most multidisciplinary fields of the last decades, fusing information and knowledge from neuroscience, engineering and computer science. This book focuses on the results from the strategic alliance between Neuroscience and Robotics that help the scientific community to better understand the brain as well as design robotic devices and algorithms for interfacing humans and robots. The first part of the book introduces the idea of neuro-robotics, by presenting state-of-the-art bio-inspired devices. The second part of the book focuses on human-machine interfaces for performance augmentation, which can seen as augmentation of abilities of healthy subjects or assistance in case of the mobility impaired. The third part of the book focuses on the inverse problem, i.e. how we can use robotic devices that physically interact with the human body, in order (a) to understand human motor control and (b) to provide therapy to neurologically impaired people or people with disabilities.

Alexia - Diagnosis, Treatment and Theory (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Alexander Leff, Randi Starrfelt Alexia - Diagnosis, Treatment and Theory (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Alexander Leff, Randi Starrfelt
R3,501 Discovery Miles 35 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a comprehensive review of the main acquired disorders of reading: hemianopic, pure and central alexia. The authors review the diagnostic criteria for each of the different types of disorder, and the efficacy of the therapeutic studies that have attempted to remediate them. The different theoretical models of adult reading, which largely rest on how the reading system responds to injury, are also discussed and evaluated. Focal brain injury caused by stroke and brain tumors are discussed in depth as are the effects of dementia on reading.

This book starts with a chapter on normal reading, followed by chapters on hemianopic alexia, pure alexia and central alexia, each structured in the same way, with: a description of the condition; a historical review of cases to date; psychophysics; consideration of the causative lesions; evidence from functional imaging studies on patients and, most importantly, a review of the evidence base for treating each condition. Finally, there is a chapter on how patient data has informed how we think about reading.

"Alexia: Diagnosis, Treatment and Theory" is aimed at neuropsychologists (both experimental and clinical), neurologists, speech therapists and others who deal with patients whose reading has been affected by an acquired brain injury, as well as interested students studying language disorders.

Intervertebral Discs and Other Mechanical Disorders of the Lumbar Spine - Evidence-Based Conservative Management and Treatment... Intervertebral Discs and Other Mechanical Disorders of the Lumbar Spine - Evidence-Based Conservative Management and Treatment (Hardcover)
C.K. Fernando
R788 R699 Discovery Miles 6 990 Save R89 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a book written for physical therapists and physicians interested in the treatment of patients with low back pain. The author has brought nearly 50 years of clinical training and scientific evidence to write this book. According to a very well known physical therapist, this book is claimed to be a seminal book on low back pain, and according to Dr. Basmajian (Father of EMG Biofeedback) "it should strengthen the hands and minds of several branches of the healing professions while clearing the debris of dubious techniques."

The book is about treatment of Mechanical Disorders of Lumbar Spine and mainly Intervertebral Disc Disorders by physical therapists using conservative techniques.

The author is cognizant of the fact that patients who come to physical therapy should not be harmed by physical therapy, hence with this in mind, these gentle techniques are presented to the practicing physical therapist and the student alike.

There are 9 chapters with two appendices and an index. The three anatomy chapters were co-authored with Dr. Arthur Nelson. The next few chapters are on sprains/strains, intervertebral disc conditions, spinal stenosis and disc degeneration, spondylolesthesis/spondylolysis and spondylosis. In addition to that, there are chapters on epidemiology, clinical evaluation, chronic low back pain, and physical therapy techniques.

The main thrust in this book, is that all patients must be treated by proper clinical diagnosis based on pathophysiology using sensitive and specific tests and arriving at treatment techniques which are evidence based.

This book is not for the believer and non-scientist, but to all those who profess to be physical therapists/scientists. This might be the only book written by two physical therapists for the treatment of patients suffering low back problems, with evidence to back it up.

The management of patients who present with a myocardial i nfarcti on has altered radi ca lly over the past two decades. The expansion of knowledge relating to the epidemiology of the condition together with a greater understanding of the causes of the early mortality from it have resulted in major changes in the way these pati ents are treated duri ng the acute phase of the illness. The deve 1 opment of 'dedi cated' Coronary Care Units in hospitals and the recogni ti on of the need for ' Mobile Coronary Care Units' in the cOl1Ul1unity have made a major impact upon the early mortality from myocardial infarction. Over the past decade, a great deal of attention has been paid to strategies designed to limit the size of a myocardial infarct. As an extensi on of thi s approach, the 1980' s have seen the evo 1 uti on of techniques for revascularization of ischemic tissue. All these procedures while appearing to hold the promise of reducing the acute mortality from myocardial infarction, create the need for a planned approach to the long term management of these patients. While there are some modest i ndi cati ons that coronary atherosc 1 erosi s coul d be arrested or even reversed, for all practical purposes it remains a chroni c progressi ve di sease.
