Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Earth's Surface and Atmosphere (Hardcover): Pampaloni, Paloscia Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Earth's Surface and Atmosphere (Hardcover)
Pampaloni, Paloscia
R3,877 R3,419 Discovery Miles 34 190 Save R458 (12%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the 6 Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment held in Florence, Italy on March 15-18, 1999.
Over the last two decades, passive microwave remote sensing has made considerable progress, and has achieved significant results in the study of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Many years of observations with ground-based and satellite-borne sensors have made an important contribution to improving our knowledge of many geophysical processes of the Earth's environment and of global changes. The evolution in microwave radiometers aboard satellites has increased steadily over recent years. At the same time, many investigations have been carried out both to improve the algorithms for the retrieval of geophysical parameters and to develop new technologies.
The book is divided into four main sections: three of these are devoted to the observation of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, and the fourth, to future missions and new technologies. The first section deals with the study of sea and land surfaces, and reports recent advances in remote sensing of ocean wind, sea ice, soil moisture and vegetation biomass, including electromagnetic modelling and the assimilation of radiometric data in models of land surface processes. The following two sections are devoted to the measurement of atmospheric quantities which are of fundamental importance in climatology and meteorology, and, since they influence radio-wave propagation, they also impact on several other fields, including geodesy, navigational satellite and radioastronomy. The last section presents an overview of new technologies and plansfor future missions.

Chris Hamnett
R1,726 Discovery Miles 17 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study presents recent findings on home-ownership in the 1990s. It examines economic and social issues central to the housing market and provides an analysis of "winners" and "losers": those who gained financially and those who became victims of negative equity. Covering the postwar period the authors trace developments in the housing market in relation to class, race, gender and income with special reference to the growth and evolution of home-ownership since the Second World War; the sale of council houses; the role of government in encouraging home-ownership; and changes in bank and building society lending in the 1970s and 1980s and the consequences. This accessible volume should appeal to undergraduates of urban planning, human geography, social policy and applied economics but should also be of interest and value to policy makers.

Michele Crosetto, Lorenzo Solari
R3,504 Discovery Miles 35 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Satellite Interferometry Data Interpretation and Exploitation: Case Studies from the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS) focuses on the interpretation and exploitation of data obtained from InSAR, thus enabling millimeter-scale deformation measurements from space. The most emblematic InSAR service, the European Ground Motion Service (EGMS), opens a wide range of new applications. However, for effective use of raw data, interpretation techniques and methods are required. This book presents interpretation protocols that can be applied to any InSAR data, as well as the most relevant technical aspects and boundaries of measurement points. Detailed case studies are reviewed to demonstrate points. This book will be a valuable resource for remote sensing specialists, as well as non-specialists in geotechnics, geology and other geosciences who are looking to apply InSAR data techniques in their research.

Digital Places - Living with Geographic Information Technologies (Paperback): Michael Curry Digital Places - Living with Geographic Information Technologies (Paperback)
Michael Curry
R1,576 Discovery Miles 15 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

By offering an understanding of Geographic Information Systems within the social, economic, legal, political and ethical contexts within which they exist, the author shows that there are substantial limits to their ability to represent the very objects and relationships, people and places, that many believe to be most important.
Focusing on the ramifications of GIS usage, Digital Places shows that they are associated with far-reaching changes in the institutions in which they exist, and in the lives of those they touch. In the end they call for a complete rethinking of basic ideas, like privacy and intellectual property and the nature of scientific practice, that have underpinned public life for the last one hundred years.

Eurasian Arctic Land Cover and Land Use in a Changing Climate (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Garik Gutman, Anni Reissell Eurasian Arctic Land Cover and Land Use in a Changing Climate (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Garik Gutman, Anni Reissell
R2,701 Discovery Miles 27 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume is a compilation of studies on interactions of land-cover/land-use change with climate in a region where the climate warming is most pronounced compared to other areas of the globe. The climate warming in the far North, and in the Arctic region of Northern Eurasia in particular, affects both the landscape and human activities, and hence human dimensions are an important aspect of the topic. Environmental pollution together with climate warming may produce irreversible damages to the current Arctic ecosystems. Regional land-atmosphere feedbacks may have large global importance. Remote sensing is a primary tool in studying vast northern territories where in situ observations are sporadic. State-of-the-art methods of satellite remote sensing combined with GIS and models are used to tackle science questions and provide an outlook of current land-cover changes and potential scenarios for the future.

Audience: The book is a truly international effort involving U.S. and European scientists. It is directed at the broad science community including graduate students, academics and other professionals in this field.

Geographic information system (GIS) computer technology is revolutionizing the way we interact with information. Data, text, drawings, maps, and images contain information that can be accessed and used intuitively through drawings containing graphical representations of the facilities to which they apply, e.g., emission stacks, sampling locations, and sites, to name only a few examples.
Environmental GIS technology is being applied with increasing frequency to manage industrial facilities. Environmental GIS describes the application of this information technology. It addresses environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) information management in an integrated manner. The book focuses on dealing with information from an organizational or corporate standpoint, meaning that the needs are not specialized to the ES&H area, but are an inherent part of managing the organization. Environmental, safety, and health information management needs are examined in the context of the overall corporate information flow. This book addresses

Monika Sester, Lars Bernard, Volker Paelke
R5,217 Discovery Miles 52 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe (AGILE) was established in early 1998 to promote academic teaching and research on GIS at the European level. Since then, the annual AGILE c- ference has gradually become the leading GIScience conference in Europe and provides a multidisciplinary forum for scientific knowledge prod- tion and dissemination. GIScience addresses the understanding and automatic processing of geospatial information in its full breadth. While geo-objects can be represented either as vector data or in raster formats these representations have also guided the research in different disciplines, with GIS researchers concentrating on vector data while research in photogrammetry and c- puter vision focused on (geospatial) raster data. Although there have - ways been small but fine sessions addressing photogrammetry and image analysis at past AGILE conferences, these topics typically played only a minor role. Thus to broaden the domain of topics the AGILE 2009 con- rence it is jointly organized with a Workshop of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), dedicated to High Re- lution Satellite Imagery, organized by Prof. Christian Heipke of the Le- niz Universitat Hannover. This collocation provides opportunities to explore commonalities - tween research communities and to ease exchange between participants to develop or deepen mutual understanding. We hope that this approach enables researchers from the different communities to identify common - terests and research methods and thus provides a basis for possible future cooperations."

Environmental Information Systems (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Oliver Gunther Environmental Information Systems (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Oliver Gunther
R1,546 Discovery Miles 15 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Environmental information systems (EIS) are concerned with the management of data about the soil, the water, the air, and the species in the world around us. This first textbook on the topic gives a conceptual framework for EIS by structuring the data flow into 4 phases: data capture, storage, analysis, and metadata management. This flow corresponds to a complex aggregation process gradually transforming the incoming raw data into concise documents suitable for high-level decision support. All relevant concepts are covered, including statistical classification, data fusion, uncertainty management, knowledge based systems, GIS, spatial databases, multidimensional access methods, object-oriented databases, simulation models, and Internet-based information management. Several case studies present EIS in practice.

Patricia Sol is, Marcela Zeballos
R1,602 Discovery Miles 16 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection amplifies the experiences of some of the world's young people who are working to address SDGs using geospatial technologies and multi-national collaboration. Authors from every region of the world who have emerged as leaders in the YouthMappers movement share their perspectives and knowledge in an accessible and peer-friendly format. YouthMappers are university students who create and use open mapping for development and humanitarian purposes. Their work leverages digital innovations - both geospatial platforms and communications technologies - to answer the call for leadership to address sustainability challenges. The book conveys a sense of robust knowledge emerging from formal studies or informal academic experiences - in the first-person voices of students and recent graduates who are at the forefront of creating a new map of the world. YouthMappers use OpenStreetMap as the foundational sharing mechanism for creating data together. Authors impart the way they are learning about themselves, about each other, about the world. They are developing technology skills, and simultaneously teaching the rest of the world about the potential contributions of a highly connected generation of emerging world leaders for the SDGs. The book is timely, in that it captures a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the YouthMappers movement's ability to share emerging expertise, and one that coincides with a pivotal moment in the geopolitical history of planet earth whose inhabitants need to hear from them. Most volumes that cover the topic of sustainability in terms of youth development are written by non-youth authors. Moreover, most are written by non-majoritarian, entrenched academic scholars. This book instead puts forward the diverse voices of students and recent graduates in countries where YouthMappers works, all over the world. Authors cover topics that range from water, agriculture, food, to waste, education, gender, climate action and disasters from their own eyes in working with data, mapping, and humanitarian action, often working across national boundaries and across continents. To inspire readers with their insights, the chapters are mapped to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ways that connect a youth agenda to a global agenda. With a preface written by Carrie Stokes, Chief Geographer and GeoCenter Director, United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This is an open access book.
