Captain Marvel
The Marvels
Documentary-style sci-fi feature. In 2031, ten years after aliens first invaded the Earth, a film crew follows an elite infantry unit as they try to repel the invaders' daily attacks. After the world's armies are united with the formation of the United Defence Force, soldiers have managed to reduce the number of murderous extraterrestrials and patrol them from the remote Outpost 37. But unbeknown to them, the aliens are planning a second invasion and the team stationed at the outpost are about to find themselves massively outnumbered and outgunned when their foes' reinforcements arrive...
Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes. When a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
Agent J (Smith) has long been every bit as perplexed by the perpetually-surly countenance of his older partner, Agent K (Jones), as he has been by the variety of aliens the pair are charged with keeping under control. However, when alien forces assassinate K with such extraterrestrial efficiency Agent J seems to be the only person to believe that K hasn't been dead for 40 years, the younger man is at a loss and determines to get his partner back. With the aid of a terrifying 'time jump', Agent J travels back to MIB's early years in the 1960s. Here he hooks up with a younger Agent K (Josh Brolin) and attempts to prevent his death and change the course of history. Will he also learn a thing or two about the secrets of the universe the older K kept so close to his chest?

Double bill of sci-fi action films based on the first two novels of Suzanne Collins' trilogy. In 'The Hunger Games' (2012) Jennifer Lawrence stars as 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a citizen of the totalitarian post-apocalyptic country of Panem, formerly the United States. Every year, the all-powerful ruling agency known as the Capitol selects one boy and one girl from each of Panem's 12 impoverished rival districts to fight to the death on live national television in a contest known as 'The Hunger Games', in which the winner is given food to feed their entire district for a year. When her younger sister Primrose (Willow Shields) is selected as a contestant, Katniss steps up to take her place. Under the tutelage of inebriated former champion Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), Katniss goes into training for the fight of her life. In 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' (2013), fresh from her triumph in the 74th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss, along with fellow winner Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), returns home to District 12 for some much-needed rest. But soon after, while on a 'Victory Tour' of the other districts, she becomes aware of growing dissent to the Capitol's rule, and realises that rebellion is in the air. As Panem prepares itself for the third 'Quarter Quell' (75th Hunger Games), autocratic ruler President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland), still smarting from the Capitol's humiliation in the last games, stacks the deck to ensure that the upcoming tournament will wipe out any resistance from the districts once and for all.

Double-bill of big-budget spin-offs of the classic 1960s sci-fi adventure series created by Gene Roddenberry. In 'Star Trek' (2009), the film chronicles the early years in the life of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members, including Kirk's enrolment at Starfleet Academy, his first meeting with Spock (Zachary Quinto) and their battles with time-travelling Romulans from the future. Enterprise are called back to Earth after a devastating force from within their organisation leaves the planet in chaos and Starfleet in pieces. Determined to settle the score, Kirk embarks on a manhunt with the rest of his crew including Spock, Scotty (Pegg) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) to find the party responsible before their whole world is laid to waste.
James Cameron's much-imitated sci-fi classic. A humanoid cyborg from a future dominated by machines (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is sent back in time to kill the mother (Linda Hamilton) of the as-yet-unborn rebel leader John Connor. Meanwhile, the rebels also select an agent (Michael Biehn) to travel back in time and stop the Terminator, thereby ensuring that events follow their pre-ordained course.
Matt Damon stars in this sci-fi thriller directed by Ridley Scott. During a mission to Mars, a crew of NASA astronauts are caught in a storm that leaves Mark Watney (Damon) missing and presumed dead. As the rest of the crew return to Earth, Watney awakens to find himself surrounded by the desolate landscape of the red planet. With no way to communicate the news of his survival back to Earth, Watney must figure out a way to prolong his life expectancy until the next NASA mission visits the planet in approximately four years. The all-star cast includes Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Agents Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) make their big-screen debut as they attempt to locate the source of a deadly virus, possibly brought to earth by aliens thirty-seven thousand years ago. As usual, their investigation reveals a potential FBI-cover up, brings them into contact with conspiracy theorists (this time a paranoid doctor (Martin Landau)) and leads them to the door of the all-powerful, yet anonymous, Syndicate. Contains interviews with the stars and previously unseen footage.
Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas star in this sci-fi action movie following the Marvel Comics superhero. Decades earlier scientist Hank Pym (Douglas) invented a special suit that would allow him to transform to the size of an ant and give him super strength. The ageing hero approaches petty thief Scott Lang (Rudd) and, with the help of his daughter Hope Van Dyne (Lilly), Hank trains him to become the new Ant-Man. After Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) takes over his former mentor Pym's business he produces a similar suit to be worn by the military as well as a more powerful suit for himself, transforming him into Yellowjacket. This results in chaos and it's up to Ant-Man to use both his thieving skills and his newfound abilities to save the day. |
