Why would someone pull the plug on a Premier League match? What prompts an athlete to search for sponsorship on eBay? How can the decision of a drinks brand CEO make or break an entire sport? Why would a sprinter think they can't afford not to dope? Sport Inc. reveals the behind-the-scenes finances that drive sport - who gets rich and who gets left on the bench. Through investigations into a wide range of sports, including how football agents really work, the betting industry and corruption, esports, the NFL's efforts to take over the world and the real cost of hosting events like the World Cup and the Olympics, the financial realities of our obsession with sport are exposed. As spectators our choices make us key players in this game of riches - it's time to find out who's winning and who's losing.

Militarism, Sport, Europe - War Without Weapons (Hardcover): J.A. Mangan Militarism, Sport, Europe - War Without Weapons (Hardcover)
J.A. Mangan; Series edited by Boria Majumdar
R4,928 Discovery Miles 49 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Virtually everywhere, directly or indirectly, modern men are prepared for war through sport. It has been no different in the past. Throughout history a constant imperative has been a moral commitment to defend the society. Sport has played its part in the inculcation of this commitment. However, sport has also been considered both a substitute for war and an antidote to war. This collection of essays explores the relationship between sport and war, bringing together established authors that include Peter Beck, Hans Bonde, Vassil Girginov, Donald Kyle, J.A. Mangan, John McClelland and Gertrud Pfister, and emerging authors such as Penelope Kissoudi, Orestis Kustrin, Callum McKenzie, Alethea Melling, Hamad Ndee and Roberta Vescovi.

Video Games and Interactive Media - A Glimpse at New Digital Entertainment (Paperback, illustrated edition): Stephane Natkin Video Games and Interactive Media - A Glimpse at New Digital Entertainment (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Stephane Natkin
R1,511 Discovery Miles 15 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores the development of the video game as a new form of interactive media and a template for future modes of entertainment. While television programs and movies are predominantly passive enterprises, video games engage the audience and provide not only audio-visual stimulation but also an enriching interaction that creates a heightened sense of immersion. Through a detailed discussion of gameplay and game design principles, Natkin explores the nature of this interaction and its impact on the entertainment industry. He explains the developmental process behind game design and the new concepts of narration and entertainment it has introduced. He then considers the future of gameplay with its potential for developing new means of artistic expression and its liability to be abused as an outlet for propaganda and coercion.

Sex and the sexual have for far too long been consigned to the dark corners by social scientists in general and tourism and leisure scholars in particular. Sex and the Sexual During People's Leisure and Tourism Experiences seeks to begin to rectify this situation by bringing the position and nature of sex and the sexual into the light of academic debate. As such, this book is designed to highlight cross-disciplinary emerging work on sex and the sexual in leisure and tourism and provide the readers with insights into this social realm. It encompasses a broad array of sex-related issues and tourism and leisure environments from across a variety of countries. The book should appeal to researchers and students across the humanities and social sciences both for the value of the research in its own right and the ability of it to be used as a lens through which to view the position of sex and the sexual as well as tourism and leisure in today's world. Overall, it is argued that sex and the sexual should play a part in the academic discourse, especially if we wish to describe what is actually happening out there as far as tourism and leisure are concerned.

Who wants to be a Billionaire? is the story of James Packer's desperate battle to win his father's love and respect. It's also a tale of billion-dollar bets gone disastrously wrong. But above all it's the portrait of a troubled relationship between a dominant father and dutiful son. In this powerful sequel to his number one bestseller, The Rise and Rise of Kerry Packer, Paul Barry reveals how Kerry derided his son as 'too soft', 'too close to his mother' and 'a loser', and refused to relax his grip on the empire until he came close to death. In response, James has tried to prove himself - in the only way the Packers know -by making more money. Having watched Kerry lose hundreds of millions of dollars in the world's casinos, James chose to bet billions on buying them instead, and almost lost the lot. As the global financial crisis sent stock markets spinning in early 2009, James Packer's fortune shrank by $4 billion and he lost the title of Australia's richest man. He started smoking again, put on weight and shut himself off from friends. A year on, calm has returned and markets have recovered. But will James bounce back? Or was his father right?

Priscilla Boniface, Peter Fowler
R2,400 Discovery Miles 24 000 Out of stock

Tourism is now a global phenomenon set to become the world's largest industry and already crucial to many national and local economies. To a great extent it feeds off heritage - from monuments and treasures to indigenous cultures, ideas and images. How can heritage sites be protected from, yet still enjoyed by, ever-increasing numbers of tourists? Various heritages are now presented to a wide range of culturally-differentiated tourists and armchair travellers. How does and should the interpreter give meaning to structures, artefacts and ideas for global villagers with different backgrounds, motivations and expectations? Drawing on a wide range of examples from round the world, including Paris, Hawaii, national parks and world heritage sites, Nazi artefacts and `1492', the book specifies both good and bad practice. It pleads for greater understanding of the nature of heritage and tourism, in order to generate better understanding of the global condition.

The major role of the Council of Europe and the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) in addressing the new challenges to sports ethics was confirmed by the 11th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Sport, held in Athens on 11 and 12 December 2008. A political impetus was given on 16 June 2010 by the Committee of Ministers, with the adoption of an updated version of the Code of Sports Ethics (Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)9), emphasizing the requisite co-ordination between governments and sports organizations. The EPAS prepared the ministerial conference and stepped up its work in an international conference organized with the University of Rennes, which was attended by political leaders, athletes, researchers and officials from the voluntary sector. The key experiences described in the conference and the thoughts that it prompted are described in this publication. All the writers share the concern that the end result should be practical action.
