Hip and Knee Pain Disorders - An evidence-informed and clinical-based approach integrating manual therapy and exercise... Hip and Knee Pain Disorders - An evidence-informed and clinical-based approach integrating manual therapy and exercise (Hardcover)
Various; Edited by Benoy Mathew, Carol Courtney, Cesar Fernandez-De-Las-Penas
R1,791 Discovery Miles 17 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hip and Knee Pain Disorders has been written to provide a state-of-the-art, evidence-informed and clinically-informed overview of the examination and conservative management of hip/knee pain conditions. Under the current predominantly evidence-based practice paradigm, clinician expertise, patient preference, and best available research determine examination, and prognostic and clinical management decisions. However, this paradigm has been understood by many to place greater value and emphasis on the research component, thereby devaluing the other two. Evidence-informed practice is a term that has been suggested to honor the original intent of evidence-based practice, while also acknowledging the value of clinician experience and expertise. In essence, evidence-informed practice combines clinical reasoning, based on current best evidence, with authority-based knowledge and a pathophysiological rationale derived from extrapolation of basic science knowledge. Unlike other published textbooks that overemphasize the research component in decision-making, this book aims to address the clinical reality of having to make decisions on the management of a patient with hip/knee pain, in the absence of a comprehensive scientific rationale, using other sources of knowledge. It offers an evidence-informed textbook that values equally research evidence, clinician expertise and patient preference. The book is edited by three recognised world leaders in clinical research into manual therapy and chronic pain. Their research activities are concentrated on the evidence-based management of musculoskeletal pain conditions using conservative interventions. For this book they have combined their knowledge and clinical expertise with that of 38 additional contributors, all specialists in the field The contributors include a mix of clinicians and clinician-researchers. Hip and Knee Pain Disorders is unique in bringing together manual therapies and exercise programs in a multimodal approach to the management of these pain conditions from both a clinical, but also evidence-based, perspective. It acknowledges the expanding direct access role of the physical therapy profession. The book provides an important reference source for clinicians of all professions interested in conservative management of the hip and knee regions. It will also be useful as a textbook for students at both entry and post-graduate level.

This book aims to provide a comprehensive account of biological rhythms and how they affect exercise. Particular attention is given to sleep, its biological function, and the consequences for exercise performance of sleep loss. There are chapters devoted to the effects of disturbing the circadian body clock, such as when multiple time zones are crossed and jet-lag experienced. The effects of nocturnal shift work and seasonal variation are also covered. The interactions between exercise and the female menstrual cycle are explained and the issue of exercise during pregnancy discussed. Finally, there is a chapter devoted to research methods in chronobiology, the scientific discipline underpinning the content of the book.

Concussion in Professional Team Sports: Time for a Harmonised Approach? (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Alexandra Veuthey Concussion in Professional Team Sports: Time for a Harmonised Approach? (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Alexandra Veuthey
R3,799 Discovery Miles 37 990 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

The risk of athletes sustaining concussion while participating in professional team sports raises two serious concerns both nationally and internationally. First, concussion in sport carries a public health risk, given that injured athletes may have to deal with significant long-term medical complications, with some of the worst cases resulting in Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Secondly, sports governing bodies are now exposed to the risk of financial and reputational damage as a consequence of legal proceedings being filed against them. A good example of this, among many other recent examples, is the case of the United States of America's National Football League (NFL), the governing body for American football, which, in 2015, committed to pay US$ 1 billion to settle the class action filed by its former professional players. This book examines how to most efficiently reduce these public health and legal risks, and proposes a harmonised solution across sports and legal systems.

The biceps tendon is one of the most challenging anatomic structures to completely understand. Its precise role for shoulder function has yet to be completely defined, and pathologic conditions exist at both its proximal and distal ends. In recent years, the biceps labral complex has been recognized as a common cause of shoulder pain among patients. Accurate diagnosis, utilizing both physical examination and imaging, is crucial to decision-making regarding the most effective treatment. Many controversies exist surrounding the management of biceps pathology with a myriad of potential solutions to consider. This practical text breaks down the biceps into succinct, digestible portions with expert tips and tricks to help manage bicipital problems in a wide array of patients. Sensibly divided into three thematic sections, it encompasses all aspects of the biceps tendon, including relevant anatomy, diagnosis, imaging, and non-operative management (including rehabilitation and biologic treatments). Surgical management strategies as they pertain to both proximal and distal biceps tendon pathologies will be covered, including both arthroscopic and open tenodesis, transfer, and inlay and onlay fixation methods. A review of associated complications and how to avoid them is likewise described in detail, along with post-surgical rehabilitation techniques to maximize return to play. Ideal for orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists at all levels, The Management of Biceps Pathology will be a unique resource for all clinicians facing challenges treating the active patient with shoulder and elbow pain.

Overtraining Syndrome in Athletes - A Comprehensive Review and Novel Perspectives (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Flavio Cadegiani Overtraining Syndrome in Athletes - A Comprehensive Review and Novel Perspectives (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Flavio Cadegiani
R1,991 Discovery Miles 19 910 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book discusses major changes in our understanding of the most prevalent non-orthopedic, sports-related condition - overtraining syndrome (OTS), arguing that it should be considered as the manifestation of burnout in athletes, rather than simply the result of excessive training. While the chronic adaptations of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems to exercise are well documented, those of the endocrine system are less well known, and adaptations of the hormonal ranges for athletes are yet to be determined. There is also a lack of standardized diagnostic criteria, consistent assessment methods and biomarkers. This book offers a systematic review of the hormonal aspects of overtraining syndrome, and a comparison with sports-related syndromes triggered by chronic deprivation of different sorts, including the female athlete triad (and its derivative, RED-S) and burnout syndrome of the athlete (BSA). It demonstrates that these conditions, although studied separately from each other, may all be different manifestations of the same condition, leading to 'maladaptive' (dysfunctional forced adaptations to a hostile environment) changes in response to chronic depletion of energy and mechanisms of repair, causing multiple dysfunctions. The author proposes that OTS/Paradoxical Deconditioning Syndrome (PDS), RED-S/TRIAD and BSA are parts of a same condition, or at least a group of similar conditions. Further, the book offers a chronological overview of OTS, based on preliminary research. Given its broad scope, this concise reference book will appeal to a range of health professionals. It allows readers, including those without a strong academic background, to gain a systematic understanding of OTS.

This practical text reviews the most recent literature supporting clinical decisions regarding over a dozen common foot and ankle conditions, along with presentations of the techniques themselves, both surgical and non-surgical. The conditions are presented anatomically from forefoot to ankle, beginning with issues surrounding toenails, such as fungal infection and treatment of ingrown toenails, then proceeds to discuss the toes and toe joints, including hammertoe fixation, 2nd MPJ pathology, and Lapidus bunionectomy. Treatmentsfor arthritis of the midfoot and flatfoot follow, along with arthroscopy and arthroplasty of the ankle, surgical and non-surgical approaches for Achilles tendon ruptures, and treatments for Charcot neuroarthropathy, clubfoot and general considerations of wound care of the foot and ankle. Throughout, an emphasis is placed on the best available evidence for each treatment strategy. Evidence-Based Podiatry will be a valuable resource for podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, and residents, fellows and trainees treating these common foot and ankle conditions.
