Tennis Elbow - Clinical Management (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Jennifer Moriatis Wolf Tennis Elbow - Clinical Management (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Jennifer Moriatis Wolf
R1,836 Discovery Miles 18 360 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Bringing together the current knowledge and evidence about the causes and management of tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, the diagnosis and various treatment options for this common sports injury are presented in detail. Generally attributed to overexertion or repetitive motion of the elbow joint, tennis elbow causes pain, tenderness and stiffness in the elbow and wrist even in non-athletic, day-to-day activities, such as lifting and pulling. Beginning with its etiology, subsequent chapters explore both conservative and surgical treatments, from physical therapy, joint injections and acupuncture to arthroscopy, open surgery and denervation. Outcomes, rehabilitation and return to play are also discussed, as are techniques and indications for handling complications and revision surgery. Ideal for orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine practitioners, Tennis Elbow: Clinical Management is a practical reference for any clinician treating athletes or active patients.

Disabling Obesity - From Determinants to Health Care Models (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Paolo Capodaglio, Joel Faintuch, Antonio... Disabling Obesity - From Determinants to Health Care Models (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Paolo Capodaglio, Joel Faintuch, Antonio Liuzzi
R3,656 Discovery Miles 36 560 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Obesity is currently regarded as one of the major health challenges of the developed world. Excess body weight is an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders and even psychiatric problems and is estimated to cause nearly 3 million deaths per year worldwide. Obesity is not necessarily associated with comorbidities: there are indeed metabolically healthy obese individuals. Thus, we need to consider individuals presenting simple with obesity separately from those at risk of developing or who have already developed complex clinical states potentially leading to disability. Comorbidities can tip the balance of independence in patients who already have functional limitations mainly due to the excess of mass itself or who develop conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where an abnormal metabolism of adipose tissue prevails. Morbid obesity with comorbidities leading to disability represents a real social and economic burden for National Health Systems worldwide. The presence of multiple and associated comorbidities often represents an obstacle to being admitted to hospitals for the treatment of metabolic diseases. On the other hand, clinical units with optimal standards for the treatment of pathological conditions in normal-weight patients are often structurally and technologically inadequate for the care of patients with extreme obesity. The aim of this book is to focus on the pathophysiological and rehabilitative aspects of disabling obesity, highlighting multidisciplinary rehabilitation interventions as key to counteracting the disabling aspects of complicated obesity.

Athletic Enhancement, Human Nature and Ethics - Threats and Opportunities of Doping Technologies (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Jan... Athletic Enhancement, Human Nature and Ethics - Threats and Opportunities of Doping Technologies (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Jan Tolleneer, Sigrid Sterckx, Pieter Bonte
R3,483 Discovery Miles 34 830 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

The book provides an in-depth discussion on the human nature concept from different perspectives and from different disciplines, analyzing its use in the doping debate and researching its normative overtones. The relation between natural talent and enhanced abilities is scrutinized within a proper conceptual and theoretical framework: is doping to be seen as a factor of the athlete's dehumanization or is it a tool to fulfill his/her aspirations to go faster, higher and stronger? Which characteristics make sports such a peculiar subject of ethical discussion and what are the, both intrinsic and extrinsic, moral dangers and opportunities involved in athletic enhancement? This volume combines fundamental philosophical anthropological reflection with applied ethics and socio-cultural and empirical approaches. Furthermore guidelines will be presented to decision- and policy-makers on local, national and international levels. Zooming in on the intrinsic issue of what is valuable about our homo sapiens biological condition, this volume devotes only scant attention to the specific issue of natural talent and why such talent is appreciated so differently than biotechnological origins of ability. In addition, specific aspects of sports such as its competitive nature and its direct display of bodily prowess provide good reason to single out the issue of natural athletic talent for sustained ethical scrutiny.

The Female Athlete Triad - A Clinical Guide (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Catherine M. Gordon, Meryl S. LeBoff The Female Athlete Triad - A Clinical Guide (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Catherine M. Gordon, Meryl S. LeBoff
R2,962 Discovery Miles 29 620 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This is the first book of its kind to focus solely on the female athlete triad - its origins, its recognition, and most importantly, its management. Since the symptoms themselves cover a range of medical specialties, chapters are written by experts in a number of relevant fields - sports medicine, orthopedics, endocrinology, and pediatrics - with an eye toward overall care of the young female athlete. Additionally, each chapter includes suggestions on how to educate and communicate with young athletes and their parents, as well as trainers and coaches, on how to manage the illness outside of the direct clinical setting. The female athlete triad is often seen in sports where low body weight is emphasized, such as gymnastics, figure skating, and running, though it can appear in any sport or activity. The interrelated symptoms - eating disorders, amenorrhea, and low bone mass - exist on a spectrum of severity and are serious and potentially life-threatening if not properly treated. Psychological problems, in addition to medical ones, are not uncommon. The Female Athlete Triad: A Clinical Guide discusses all of these areas for a well-rounded and in-depth approach to the phenomenon and will be a useful reference for any clinician working with female athletes across the lifespan.

Introduction to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Andrew M. Luks, Robb W. Glenny, H.Thomas Robertson Introduction to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Andrew M. Luks, Robb W. Glenny, H.Thomas Robertson
R3,340 Discovery Miles 33 400 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is an important diagnostic test in pulmonary medicine and cardiology. Capable of providing significantly more information about an individual's exercise capacity than standard exercise treadmill or 6-minute walk tests, the test is used for a variety of purposes including evaluating patients with unexplained exercise limitation or dyspnea on exertion, monitoring disease progression or response to treatment, determining fitness to undergo various surgical procedures and monitoring the effects of training in highly fit athletes. Introduction to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing is a unique new text that is ideal for trainees. It is presented in a clear, concise and easy-to-follow manner and is capable of being read in a much shorter time than the available texts on this topic. Chapters describe the basic physiologic responses observed during sustained exercise and explain how to perform and interpret these studies. The utility of the resource is further enhanced by several sections of actual patient cases, which provide opportunities to begin developing test interpretation skills. Given the widespread use of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in clinical practice, trainees in pulmonary and critical care medicine, cardiology, sports medicine, exercise physiology, and occasionally internal medicine, will find Introduction to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing to be an essential and one of a kind reference.

Pathology of the Mesothelium (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): John S. P. Jones Pathology of the Mesothelium (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
John S. P. Jones
R2,700 Discovery Miles 27 000 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Many books have been written about the pathology of the major organs of the body such as the lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract etc. Included in these are descriptions - often with a minor emphasis - of pathological conditions which affect their serosal surfaces. In this book I have endeavoured to reverse the process and treat the mesothelium as an organ in its own right, rather than being the "no man's land" between various major structures. A number of pathological conditions are common to the coverings of the three major body cavities - the pleura, pericardium and peritoneum - while some abnormalities are exclusive to one or other sites. I hope that the contents of this book cover a broad enough spectrum of mesothelial diseases to be of help to service pathologists, who are ever increasingly being asked to make diagnoses, particularly on small biopsies of pleural and peritoneal tissues. It is also my hope that the various aspects of the subject have been dealt with in sufficient depth to be of use to pathol ogists engaged in teaching and research, and to those whose interests lie in the structure and function of the mesothelium. There is still much to be learned in understanding the way the mesothelium behaves in the realm of both inflammatory response and tumour formation. If this book provides a stimulus to furthering research in these fields I feel it will have achieved its objective.

Energy Balance in Motion (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Klaas R. Westerterp Energy Balance in Motion (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Klaas R. Westerterp
R1,698 Discovery Miles 16 980 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Energy balance can be maintained by adapting energy intake to changes in energy expenditure and vice versa, where short-term changes in energy expenditure are mainly caused by physical activity. Questions are whether physical activity is affected by over and under-eating, is intake affected by an increase or a decrease in physical activity, and does overweight affect physical activity? Presented evidence is largely based on studies where physical activity is quantified with doubly labeled water. Overeating does not affect physical activity while under-eating decreases habitual or voluntary physical activity. Thus, it is easier to gain weight than to lose weight. An exercise induced increase in energy requirement is compensated by intake while a change to a more sedentary routine does not induce an equivalent reduction of intake and generally results in weight gain. Overweight and obese subjects have similar activity energy expenditures than lean people despite they move less. There are two options to reverse the general population trend for an increasing body weight, reducing intake or increasing physical activity. Based on the results presented, eating less is most effective for preventing weight gain, despite a potential negative effect on physical activity when reaching a negative energy balance.

Evidence-informed guidelines, suggested websites, and additional readings further encourage practical use of information and identify further learning opportunities. For instructors, an ancillary PowerPoint presentation package aids in classroom discussion. The critical element that distinguishes the fourth edition of ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities is its unifying mission to incorporate physical activity and exercise in both disease treatment and prevention. Its emphasis on assisting people with multiple conditions, which is ever present in health care today, moves beyond primary and secondary prevention to focus on how patients and clients can be kept physically active and functionally fit.
