The viola da gamba was a central instrument in European music from
the late 15th century well into the late 18th. In this
comprehensive study, Bettina Hoffmann offers both an introduction
to the instrument -- its construction, technique and history -- for
the non-specialist, interweaving this information with a wealth of
original archival scholarship that experts will relish. The book
begins with a description of the instrument, and here Hoffmann
grapples with the complexity of various names applied to this and
related instruments. Following two chapters on the instrument's
construction and ancestry, the core of the book is given to a
historical and geographical survey of the instrument from its
origins into the classical period. The book closes with a look at
the revival of interest in the 19th and 20th centuries.
"A treasure trove for any fan of the four-stringed (and
occasionally more) instrument." - Billboard "It's not surprising
that sooner or later I'd dive down the proverbial rabbit hole into
the world of vintage bass guitars."-Geddy Lee From Rush frontman
Geddy Lee's personal collection of vintage electric bass guitars,
dating from the 1950s to the 1980s, comes the definitive volume on
the subject. Geddy's love of the bass has been nurtured over a
lifetime spent in the limelight as one of the world's premier rock
bassists. For the past seven years, he's dedicated himself to
studying the history of the instrument that's been so essential to
his career, collecting hundreds of basses from around the globe.
Written with arts journalist Daniel Richler, gorgeously
photographed in breathtaking detail by Richard Sibbald, and with
insight from Geddy's trusted bass tech and curator, John "Skully"
McIntosh, Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass profiles over 250
classic basses from Geddy's extensive collection. Representing
every tone in the bass palette, every nuance of the rock and roll
genre as well as blues, jazz, pop, and country, this one-of-a-kind
collection features so-called "beauty queens"-pristine instruments
never lifted from their cases-as well as "road warriors"-well-worn,
sweat-soaked basses that proudly show their age and use. Complete
with personal commentary from Geddy that showcases his knowledge
both as a musician and an aficionado, this luxuriously produced
volume is a revelatory look at the heavy hitters in the world of
bass-Fender, Gibson/Epiphone, Rickenbacker, Hoefner, Ampeg-and
lesser known but influential global luthiers such as Antonio Wandr
Pioli, Dan Armstrong, and Tony Zemaitis. The book also features
interviews with John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin); Adam Clayton (U2);
Robert Trujillo (Metallica); Jeff Tweedy (Wilco); Bill Wyman (The
Rolling Stones); Les Claypool (Primus); Bob Daisley (Rainbow);
Fender expert and owner of the legendary Gibson Explorer, Bass Ken
Collins; veteran guitar tech for The Who, Alan Rogan; plus comments
from many other great players across three decades of rock and
roll. Written in Geddy's singular voice, this book reveals the
stories, songs, and history behind the instruments of his
inimitable collection. Complete with an index and a graphically
designed timeline of the history of the bass, as well as an
up-close look at Geddy's basses on Rush's final R40 Tour, his stage
and recording gear from 1968 to 2017, and forewords by author and
respected vintage expert, Terry Foster, and Rush band member, Alex
Lifeson, Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass is the ultimate
compendium for the consummate collector, musician, Rush fan, and
anyone who loves the bass guitar.

"Few cello players currently before the public have enjoyed the
kind of international success in all conceivable musical career
roles as Janos Starker. In his lifetime, Starker has gained renown
as teacher, soloist and orchestra player." -Chicago Tribune
"Starker . . .remains one of the wonders of the musical world, an
artist who finds innumerable ways to shape and color lines."
-Cleveland Plain Dealer "Starker is not just a cellist. He is
widely recognized as one of the finest of the last 50 years."
-Indianapolis Star "Starker emerges here as the rare artist who
respects the past but lives enthusiastically in the present. . .
Essential. All readers; all levels." -Choice Janos Starker is
universally acknowledged as one of the world's great musicians.
Known for a flawless technique paired with expressive playing and
interpretation, the Hungarian-born cellist is arguably also the
premier teacher of his instrument in our time. String players flock
to his masterclasses from all over the world, and cellists compete
vigorously to study under him at the Indiana University School of
Music. More than the consummate musician, however, Starker is also
a raconteur and writer, occasionally quirky and droll, always witty
and with a pointed opinion to share. The World of Music According
to Starker is a colorful autobiography spanning the author's
fascinating life. From his early musical education during World War
II in Hungary, to his world tours, educational philosophy, and
recording and pedagogical legacy, Starker takes the reader on a

world events, academia, and-of course-music that have appeared in

in such undertakings . . . a cool, casual victory.' IRISH TIMES
Over a period of forty-five years, Bill Frisell has established
himself as one of the most innovative and influential musicians at
work today. Growing up playing clarinet in orchestras and marching
bands, Frisell has progressed through a remarkable range of musical
personas - from devotee of jazz master Jim Hall to 'house
guitarist' of estimable German label ECM, from edgy New York
downtown experimentalist to plaintive country and bluegrass picker.
He has been a pioneering bandleader and collaborator, a prolific
composer and arranger and a celebrated Grammy Award winner. A
quietly revolutionary guitar hero who has synthesised many
disparate musical elements into one compellingly singular sound,
Frisell connects to a diverse range of artists and admirers,
including Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Gus Van
Sant, Marianne Faithfull and Justin Vernon, many of whom feature in
this book. Through unprecedented access to the guitarist and
interviews with his close family, friends and associates, Philip
Watson tells Frisell's story for the first time. 'Stuffed with
musical encounters, so many that every couple of pages there's an
unheard Frisell recording for the reader to chase down.' NEW YORKER
'Bill Frisell, Beautiful Dreamer is the definitive biography.' BILL
MILKOWSKI, DOWNBEAT 'Superb . . . the book races along like Sonny
Rollins in full sail. Like subject, like writer: this is
super-articulate, adventurous prose.' PERSPECTIVE '[Watson's]
writing balances unbridled passion and dispassionate research
nearly as deftly as Mr. Frisell's playing does sound and silence .
. . compelling.' WALL STREET JOURNAL
Beethoven's middle-period quartets, Opp. 59, 74 and 95, are pieces
that engage deeply with the aesthetic ideas of their time. In the
first full contextual study of these works, Nancy November
celebrates their uniqueness, exploring their reception history and
early performance. In detailed analyses, she explores ways in which
the quartets have both reflected and shaped the very idea of
chamber music and offers a new historical understanding of the
works' physical, visual, social and ideological aspects. In the
process, November provides a fresh critique of three key paradigms
in current Beethoven studies: the focus on his late period; the
emphasis on 'heroic' style in discussions of the middle period; and
the idea of string quartets as 'pure', 'autonomous' artworks, cut
off from social moorings. Importantly, this study shows that the
quartets encompass a new lyric and theatrical impetus, which is an
essential part of their unique, explorative character.

Guitarist Gordon Giltrap is the epitome of what is often referred
to as a `musician's musician', in that the respect in which he is
held by his peers speaks volumes for his ability and influence.
Beginning his career as a solo acoustic guitarist and vocalist in
the late 1960s, it was 1976 before the name Gordon Giltrap came
into the public eye with the release of his landmark album
Visionary, and album and single chart success followed over the
next few years with the albums Perilous Journey and Fear Of The
Dark, as he formed The Gordon Giltrap Band to perform these
progressive rock-tinged works in the live environment. By now a
wholly instrumental performer, his greatest commercial success came
with his signature piece Heartsong, which followed up its chart
success by being picked up by the BBC for use as the theme tune to
their long-running Holiday programme. Following this, Gordon
retreated largely to the acoustic realm with his next few albums,
and retained a devoted hardcore following, as well as the
aforementioned admiration of some of the biggest names in modern
guitar music. Coming from the humblest of childhoods in South East
London, Gordon's life in and out of the spotlight has proved to be
a rollercoaster of highs and lows and one which ultimately
transcends even his musical achievements as a story of human
triumph and tragedy
