This detailed atlas illustrates the anatomical structures of the upper basal cisterns, their topography and relationship to other intra- and extradural structures. The author expands his well-established efforts to convey his outstanding neuroanatomical knowledge to the basal cisterns. His famous anatomical drawings are based upon anatomical preparations, cadaver dissections and intraoperative pictures, in order to point out important aspects concerning microsurgical and endoscopic approaches to these parts of the brain.
Exciting new developments and applications of imaging techniques have emerged over the last few years, leading to many improvements in diagnosis and staging of urologic diseases. Refinements in the technology mean that imaging now is much more precise than even five years ago, and this has significantly enhanced its application within several key fields. As such, there are virtually no books currently available that cover the impact of these advances within urology leaving a major hole in the market. With its sound overview of the current state of affairs, and also its focus on highlighting future advances, this book would therefore find a significant audience within not only trainees, but also practicing clinicians too. Furthermore, the whole topic of ultrasonography is a relatively overlooked one, with very few modern books tackling any specific areas of the field. This book will be up-to-date and will pay attention to the unique applications of ultrasound within each discipline.
There are many superb books on how to do operations but there are few or none on how to assist at them, and none written either by or for medical students or doctors. Therefore, the skills that make an expert surgical assistant are difficult to acquire. Normally, they can only be learnt in a haphazard way, by spending years in the operating theatre. This book describes those skills in a concise and systematic way, in surgery in general, and in ten different speciality areas. Although intended mainly for clinical-level medical students and junior doctors, other people who assist at surgical operations, including general practitioners, nurse assistants and surgical technologists, will also find it useful. Whether planning a career in surgery, or simply aiming for high marks in a surgical rotation, there are few better ways to impress a surgeon than by skilfully assisting at surgical operations.
Ophthalmic microsurgery is applied in ophthalmic pathological conditions. Ophthalmic pathology sets the landmarks for all kinds of microsurgical manipulations. Thus, in order to ensure the best surgical outcome, ophthalmic clinicians and microsurgeons have to consider the critical structures and potential complications before they start with the surgical procedure. Written by the world famous expert G. O. H. Naumann, this excellent textbook emphasizes the ocular structures such as the nuances of morphology, surgical anatomy, and pathology. The content includes: Unique features of closed system intraocular surgery in closed system and open eye surgery.- Crucial aspects of restoring the anterior chamber, includes such as the role of blood-ocular barriers and effects of paracenthesis-effects. The spectrum of potential complications in (pseudo-) exfoliation- syndromes as well as the most vulnerable cell populations.- The features of normal and pathologic wound healing in the various tissues after non-mechanical laser and mechanical interventions emergency-pathology requiring prompt surgical intervention. Brilliant artwork and sketches are further illustrating and summarizing the complex pathology. Thus, the reader will derive great value for the daily routine when learning how the specific pathology modifies the indications and techniques of microsurgery.
There are numerous textbooks detailing almost every aspect of the different laparoscopic procedures. However, in this era of evidence-based medicine, a text focusing on the controversies - from the laparoscopic as well as the general surgeon's point of view - is missing. This book is not intended to be yet another textbook of laparoscopy; instead, its main purpose is to address unsettled issues of controversy. This will significantly enhance evidence-based knowledge of this developing field, stimulate thinking and discussions in rounds and meetings, assist surgeons in their decision making and stimulate further research. This book is not aimed only at laparoscopic surgeons - with their steadily increasing number - but also at general surgeons and surgical trainees. It will define and sharpen points of controversy by internationally recognized authors, and thus provide 'state of the art' quality to each topic.

by S. GUASCHINO Dean, Trieste University School of Medicine The society we live in is in continual development and has a number of priori ties for improving the standards of communication. The scientific sector in par ticular thrives on the exchange of information, which is the foundation of progress itself. The channels through which this interaction takes place are many and are aimed at optimising teaching methodology. Researchers and scholars, research centres and the places of higher learning themselves are increasingly aware of the growing importance of universities, which, thanks to their intrinsic ability to renew themselves, have taken on a vital central and propulsive role. Communication develops as a result of free exchange, debate of the materials available and the study of the various references and analysis sources. With the advent. of information systems, the teaching methodology has assumed a decisive role, both in terms of the quantity of data available and the quality of the information. Distance learning is a new and important opportu nity for the immediate future. The Anaesthesia and Critical Care School of Trieste has promoted this inter esting and highly relevant initiative by drawing together teaching material from the academic year 2003/2004. Numerous international lecturers have con tributed to this valuable achievement. In addition, a large part of the material is the fruit of a real consortium between the various Italian Schools of Anaesthesia."

Primary and incisional ventral hernias are common conditions often encountered in surgical practice. Because of the frequency of this problem it has come to be managed by surgeons in general, regardless of the type of hospital or the conditions dealt with in their daily practice. Laparoscopic surgery has demonstrated to have an important role among the different technique described to repair ventral hernia with less recurrent rate, less morbidity and less overall cost than open conventional repair, with all the advange of the laparoscopic approach. As a result the indications for this surgical technique are currently being debated since the advantages are evident and progressive implementation is ensured. Now is the time to analyze the usefulness, results, technical variants, anatomic, physiologic and scientific basis and implications involved in implementation of laparoscopy as the technique of choice.
Post-Operative Recovery and Pain Relief describes the major problems that may be encountered during recovery from anaesthesia and suggest how they may be avoided by careful monitoring, vigilant nursing and sound organization. The behaviour of patients during recovery is influenced by their pre-operative medical condition, by drugs they may receive both pre- and intra-operatively and by the nature of the surgery they have undergone. This updated and revised version of Eltringham's "Post Anaesthetic Recovery" contains sections devoted to each of these areas which reflect the current best practice. Post-Operative Recovery and Pain Relief will be of interest not only to nursing staff working in operating theatres and post-operative care units but also to those working in surgical units, house officers and junior anaesthetists.

In this text/video set, the leading world expert in NOTES shares his experience. Three sections cover fundamentals, current clinical applications and techniques, and future perspectives.
Despite the rising popularity of the minimally invasive laparoscopic option, open nephron-sparing surgery is still seen by many experts as the 'gold standard' for open surgery for kidney tumors and should remain the first choice for many patients. This challenges the idea that less-invasive therapies are always more desirable than open surgery. While laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery may be a more attractive option for treating small, easily accessible kidney tumors, for large tumors this is not always the case. Nephron-sparing surgery is a outstanding text that analyses all forms of surgery, open or laparoscopic, as well as providing a backdrop on renal cell carcinoma in general, and the complications and outcomes following surgery that both surgeon and patient will face. Featuring 100 colour photos, the text includes chapters on: Imaging renal masses: current status Open nephron-sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma Minimally invasive approaches for renal cell carcinoma: an overview Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy Controversies in nephron-sparing surgery Renal cell carcinoma: long-term outcome following nephron-sparing surgery Dr Sasidharan and Professor Soloway have created a superb text covering all aspects of nephron-sparing surgery that should provide excellent guidance for all those who are just beginning to perform nephron-sparing surgery or act as an aide-memoire for those familiar with nephron-sparing surgery.
Despite enormous advances made in the development of external effector prosthetics over the last quarter century, significant questions remain, especially those concerning signal degradation that occurs with chronically implanted neuroelectrodes. Offering contributions from pioneering researchers in neuroprosthetics and tissue repair, Indwelling Neural Implants: Strategies for Contending with the In Vivo Environment examines many of these challenges, paying particular attention to how the healing of tissues surrounding an implant can impact the intended use of a device. The contributions are divided into four sections * Part one examines wound healing from the initial insertion trauma through the inflammatory and repair process, explaining how the action of healing varies throughout different areas of the body. * Part two considers various performance issues specific to particular implant components, including those that arise from the chemical, mechanical, thermal, and electrical impact on surrounding tissues. It discusses challenges that result from chronic tissue stimulation and heat effects that occur with on-chip and telemetric processing. * Part three presents both in vitro and in vivo approaches to assessing wound healing response to materials. It includes the contribution of the developer of a chronic hollow fiber membrane implant who explains how an in vivo model is used to assess molecular transport in brain tissue surrounding the implant. * The final section evaluates molecular and materials strategies for intervening in CNS wound repair and enhancing the electrical communication between the electrode surface and the surrounding tissue. It also presents novel approaches to nerve regeneration and repair. |
