Nephron-Sparing Surgery (Hardcover): Krishna Sasidharan, Mark Soloway Nephron-Sparing Surgery (Hardcover)
Krishna Sasidharan, Mark Soloway
R4,018 Discovery Miles 40 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the rising popularity of the minimally invasive laparoscopic option, open nephron-sparing surgery is still seen by many experts as the 'gold standard' for open surgery for kidney tumors and should remain the first choice for many patients. This challenges the idea that less-invasive therapies are always more desirable than open surgery. While laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery may be a more attractive option for treating small, easily accessible kidney tumors, for large tumors this is not always the case. Nephron-sparing surgery is a outstanding text that analyses all forms of surgery, open or laparoscopic, as well as providing a backdrop on renal cell carcinoma in general, and the complications and outcomes following surgery that both surgeon and patient will face. Featuring 100 colour photos, the text includes chapters on: Imaging renal masses: current status Open nephron-sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma Minimally invasive approaches for renal cell carcinoma: an overview Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy Controversies in nephron-sparing surgery Renal cell carcinoma: long-term outcome following nephron-sparing surgery Dr Sasidharan and Professor Soloway have created a superb text covering all aspects of nephron-sparing surgery that should provide excellent guidance for all those who are just beginning to perform nephron-sparing surgery or act as an aide-memoire for those familiar with nephron-sparing surgery.

Manipulation Under Anesthesia (Hardcover, New): Robert C. Gordon Manipulation Under Anesthesia (Hardcover, New)
Robert C. Gordon
R4,601 Discovery Miles 46 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Spinal manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is a procedure intended for patients who suffer from musculoskeletal disorders in conjunction with biomechanical dysfunction. Performed using monitored anesthesia care, this technique is overcoming its controversial image and receiving regular use by a great number of practitioners. Manipulation Under Anesthesia is the first book to present the procedure from a historical perspective to present day use. Focusing on all aspects of MUA technique, the text provides an outline that represents this procedure from a scientific perspective, along with information concerning patient selection criteria, and documentation explaining outcomes from patient procedures. It discusses the protocols and standards by which the procedure should be incorporated into the facilities where it is being performed, features an overview of the generic procedure and policies for documenting results, and addresses the overall use of the procedure from pre-MUA through post-MUA rehabilitation. With justification for the procedure from both a clinical and patient management standpoint, this unique compilation of information is useful as both a reference and as an educational aid for doctors. It provides the necessary tools for investigating the procedure and incorporating it into any healthcare specialty.

Engineering Approaches to Mechanical and Robotic Design for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Ali Faraz,... Engineering Approaches to Mechanical and Robotic Design for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Ali Faraz, Shahram Payandeh
R4,302 Discovery Miles 43 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Within the past twenty years, the field of robotics has been finding many areas of applications ranging from space to underwater explo rations. One of these areas which is slowly gaining popularity among the users group is the notion of service robotics. This book is an in vestigation and exploration of engineering principles in the design and development of mechanisms and robotic devices that can be used in the field of surgery. Specifically the results of this book can be used for designing tools for class of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). Generally, Minimal Invasive Surgery (MIS), e. g. laparoscopic surgery, is performed by using long surgical tools, that are inserted through small incisions at the ports of entry to the body (e. g. abdominal wall) for reaching the surgical site. The main drawback of current designs of en doscopic tools is that they are not able to extend all the movements and sensory capabilities of the surgeon's hand to the surgical site. By im proving surgical procedures, training, and more practice, it is possible for surgeons to reduce completion time for each task and increase their level of skill. However, even in the best cases the level of performance of a surgeon in Minimally Invasive Surgery is still a fraction of the con ventional surgery. Any dramatically improvement is usually driven by introduction of new tools or systems that in turn bring totally new pro cedures and set of skills."

A Magnetic Laser Scanner for Endoscopic Microsurgery (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Alperen Acemoglu A Magnetic Laser Scanner for Endoscopic Microsurgery (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Alperen Acemoglu
R2,735 Discovery Miles 27 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the design, development, and characterization of a compact magnetic laser scanner for microsurgical applications. In addition, it proposes a laser incision depth controller to be used in soft tissue microsurgeries. The use of laser scanners in soft tissue microsurgery results in high quality ablations with minimal thermal damage to surrounding tissue. However, current scanner technologies for microsurgery are limited to free-beam lasers, which require direct line-of-sight to the surgical site, from outside the patient. Developing compact laser micromanipulation systems is crucial to introducing laser-scanning capabilities in hard-to-reach surgical sites, e.g., vocal cords. In this book, the design and fabrication of a magnetically actuated endoscopic laser scanner have been shown, one that introduces high-speed laser scanning for high quality, non-contact tissue ablations in narrow workspaces. Static and dynamic characterization of the system, its teleoperation through a tablet device, and its control modelling for automated trajectory executions have been shown using a fabricated and assembled prototype. Following this, the book discusses how the laser position and velocity control capabilities of the scanner can be used to design a laser incision depth controller to assist surgeons during operations.

Tips and Techniques in Laparoscopic Surgery (Hardcover, 2005): J P erissat Tips and Techniques in Laparoscopic Surgery (Hardcover, 2005)
J P erissat; Jean-Louis Dulucq
R5,896 Discovery Miles 58 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Performing a surgical operation could be compared to na- gating inside the human body. Two essential requirements are necessary for a successful apprenticeship: ? A perfect understanding of the roadmap, the anatomy ? Regular training with expert surgeon teachers showing str- egies, tactics, manoeuvres, and gestures to make the journey safe, efficient and fast For decades this was the way taken by apprentice-surgeons and also by surgeons already in practice concerned about upd- ing their knowledge. For years their only travelling companions were books, drawings, and pictures. However, printed medium cannot satisfactorily and properly reproduce the movements of a manoeuvring surgeon. In open surgery, only the two first - sistants can precisely capture by direct vision what is happ- ing in the depth of the operating field. Therefore, the duration of apprenticeship is long and restricted to a small number of people per teacher. The introduction of movie cameras into the operating rooms improved the quality of surgical education. But filming in open surgery is not so easy. The cameraperson has to be well trained to catch good takes in the depth of a pit between the heads, shoulders, and fingers of the surgeon and assistants. Most of the time, those constraints disturb the op- ator's manoeuvres, altering their pedagogical value. With the introduction of laparoscopic surgery (LS), using a video camera providing images in real time on a television screen, everything changed.
