Cognitive Supervision for Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Laser Surgery (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Loris Fichera Cognitive Supervision for Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Laser Surgery (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Loris Fichera
R1,503 Discovery Miles 15 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This thesis lays the groundwork for the automatic supervision of the laser incision process, which aims to complement surgeons' perception of the state of tissues and enhance their control over laser incisions. The research problem is formulated as the estimation of variables that are representative of the state of tissues during laser cutting. Prior research in this area leveraged numerical computation methods that bear a high computational cost and are not straightforward to use in a surgical setting. This book proposes a novel solution to this problem, using models inspired by the ability of experienced surgeons to perform precise and clean laser cutting. It shows that these new models, which were extracted from experimental data using statistical learning techniques, are straightforward to use in a surgical setup, allowing greater precision in laser-based surgical procedures.

The Role of Laparoscopy in Emergency Abdominal Surgery (Hardcover, 2012): Vincenzo Mandala The Role of Laparoscopy in Emergency Abdominal Surgery (Hardcover, 2012)
Vincenzo Mandala
R2,800 Discovery Miles 28 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first time a book about laparoscopy in emergency abdominal surgery has been published. Numerous articles have been published in specific surgical journals, but, until now, there has not been a book that collates all the aspects of this little-known field. The aim of this volume is to achieve a complete and easy presentation of all the implications associated with laparoscopy in emergency abdominal surgery. The book should be a manual that can be easily consulted by digestive, general, and specialized surgeons, especially in an emergency. The authors' contributions are founded on evidence-based medicine, which give the book scientific credibility, but this is coupled with their experience of daily practice, which adds an important complementary dimension to evidence-based medicine. This is balanced by an emphasis on clarity and accessibility, because the ultimate aim of the book is educational. We hope this book will be frequently consulted, in depth, not only by specialist practitioners, but also by undergraduate students, new graduates and surgeons in training.

Soft Tissue Biomechanical Modeling for Computer Assisted Surgery (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Yohan Payan Soft Tissue Biomechanical Modeling for Computer Assisted Surgery (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Yohan Payan
R4,282 Discovery Miles 42 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume focuses on the biomechanical modeling of biological tissues in the context of Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS). More specifically, deformable soft tissues are addressed since they are the subject of the most recent developments in this field. The pioneering works on this CAS topic date from the 1980's, with applications in orthopaedics and biomechanical models of bones. More recently, however, biomechanical models of soft tissues have been proposed since most of the human body is made of soft organs that can be deformed by the surgical gesture. Such models are much more complicated to handle since the tissues can be subject to large deformations (non-linear geometrical framework) as well as complex stress/strain relationships (non-linear mechanical framework).

Part 1 of the volume presents biomechanical models that have been developed in a CAS context and used during surgery. This is particularly new since most of the soft tissues models already proposed concern Computer Assisted Planning, with a pre-operative use of the models. Then, the volume addresses the two key issues raised for an intra-operative use of soft tissues models, namely (Part 2) "how to estimate the in vivo mechanical behavior of the tissues?" (i.e. what are the values of the mechanical parameters that can deliver realistic patient-specific behavior?) and (Part 3) "how to build a modeling platform that provides generic real-time (or at least interactive-time) numerical simulations?"

Sutureless Anastomoses - Secrets for Success (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Piergiorgio Tozzi Sutureless Anastomoses - Secrets for Success (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Piergiorgio Tozzi
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When doctors first look at sutureless anastomosis devices created by new technologies, the most frequent comment is how amazingly easy it is to create a vascular anastomosis and, as a direct consequence, they believe anybody could play the role of the cardiovascular surgeon. Pessimistic c- diovascular surgeons, on their side, think that creating a machine capable of perfectly reproducing their core activity, which consists in making an- tomosis, will kill their profession. Actually, no medical specialty's demise has been more often predicted and, at the same time, more greatly ex- gerated than that of cardiovascular surgery. According to its detractors, - ginning in the late 1980s with the angioplasty boom, continuing in the mid-1990s with the introduction of bare metal stents, and then more - cently with the introduction of drug-eluting stents, cardiovascular surgery has been on life support for nearly 15 years. This specialty's claimed collapse has generally been attributed to recent advantages in percutaneous procedures and devices that give the oppor- nity to non-surgeon doctors to accomplish the surgeon's work. The reality is different. Data suggest that cardiac surgery continues to survive and has not suffered the precipitous decline that was predicted. From the economical standpoint, CABG is much more of a mature market and the size of the opportunity remains impressive and relatively stable, with around 1,500,000 procedures performed annually worldwide, at a total cost approaching 2. 5 billion US$.
