The reception year, before a child starts formal schooling in Grade 1, is critical in a child's development. It is in the Grade R year that the teacher has a unique opportunity to enhance the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will shape the child's later academic success. A high-quality Grade R programme is therefore very important. Teaching Grade R promotes a participatory and child-centred approach to learning, based on the pedagogy of play that positions children as active learners and encourages teachers to become critically reflective practitioners. This pedagogy of play is explained in detail in the book, and suggestions and pointers are given as to how it can be used in the classroom to enhance learning.
Education is confronted with continual curriculum changes at all levels, from school to higher education. Teachers play an important role as key agents of curriculum change, and can contribute to the successful and dynamic development of curriculum if the
Realigning Teacher Training in the 21st Century is the product of extensive research that was conducted by UNISA academics in five provinces in South Africa. In this project, 500 primary schools were targeted and the research aimed to find out how Annual National Assessments were affecting the performance of the learners. In addition, the study explored the curriculum and its challenges in schools. The findings clearly indicated that these schools face many challenges and that there is a need to realign teacher training in South Africa so that teaching and learning address the issues uncovered by the research. This book addresses ways that this realignment can happen. Each chapter focuses on a particular aspect or challenge, relating to the subjects that were targeted in the research project. The chapters offer a theoretical approach, where appropriate, and focus on practical changes that can be implemented.
Through hints, tips and anecdotal advice Laurence French provides a practical guide to the day-to-day aspects of supply teaching to help make this important school role more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Written to reflect the National Occupational Standards, this handbook provides in-depth coverage of all mandatory units and a wide range of optional units. Practical examples and case studies help classroom assistants relate theory to their work in the classroom, and there are lots of activities for building evidence for the portfolio.
The book includes the traditional foci of philosophy, sociology, psychology, and teaching and learning, and emphasises how these foci influence the practice of teaching. Classic theories, that informed and continue to inform teacher education, have dominated the engagement within education but this book shifts focus to current research and innovative theories that have evolved to promote teaching and learning in a challenging and complex educational context. Hence, this book makes a deliberate attempt to map out influential classical theories that have informed the study of Education as a backdrop to explore how contemporary theories are currently influencing teaching and learning.

Dr. Jopie Breed President: SAOU

Christine Ruane examines the issues of gender and class in the teaching profession of late imperial Russia, at a time when the vocation was becoming increasingly feminized in a zealously patriarchal society. Teaching was the first profession open to women in the 1870s, and by the end of the century almost half of all Russian teachers were female. Yet the notion that mothers had a natural affinity for teaching was paradoxically matched by formal and informal bans against married women in the classroom. Ruane reveals not only the patriarchal rationale but also how women teachers viewed their public roles and worked to reverse the marriage ban. Ruane's research and insightful analysis broadens our knowledge of an emerging professional class, especially newly educated and emancipated women, during Russia's transition to a more modern society.
