Jimmy Connors is a working-man's hero, a people's champion who could tear the cover off a tennis ball, just as he tore the cover of country-club gentility off his sport. A renegade from the wrong side of the St. Louis tracks, Connors broke the rules with a radically aggressive style of play and bad boy antics that turned his matches into entertaining prizefights. In 1974 alone, he won 95 out of 99 matches, all of them while wearing the same white shorts he washed in the sink of his hotel bathrooms. In The Outsider, Connors tells the complete, uncensored story of his life and career, setting the record straight about his formidable mother, Gloria; his very public romances; and his famous opponents. Connors reveals how his issues with obsessive-compulsive disorder, dyslexia, gambling, and women at various times threatened to derail his career. The Outsider is a grand slam of a memoir written by a man once again at the top of his game, as feisty, unvarnished, and defiant as ever.

Now, this little book is an attempt to lay out some examples of relative positions/patterns that constantly occur in doubles. And then, how to react to those situations with intelligence and percentages on your side. What then should these ten pages be called? Are they rules, guidelines, dialogues, arguments, principles, fundamentals, theorems, postulations, edicts, considerations, decrees, reference points, laws, constructs, commands, criteria, standards, assumptions? Any, or all of these? This is an attempt to write down as simply as possible, the concepts that constitute a "doubles school" and that all good doubles players assume are "given." Pure percentage tennis. They have been tested and proven to be true at all levels of play. Watch a professional doubles match. See for yourself if they violate any of these concepts. And, if they do, is the point won or lost? What percentage of times?

Always dress in tennis clothes when engaging in tennis. White is the established colour. Soft shirt, white flannel trousers, heavy white socks, and rubber-soled shoes form the accepted dress for tennis. Do not appear on the courts in dark clothes, as they are apt to be heavy and hinder your speed of movement, and also they are a violation of the unwritten ethics of the game.
Written by tennis teaching professional, Marcus Paul Cootsona. Occam's Racquet focuses on the twelve most important parts of the physical and mental games of tennis. No matter what strokes you use, the ideas in here will make you the most effective player you can be.
A good lawn tennis racket is indispensable; indeed, to use a weapon of inferior make is to court failure from the start. You cannot be too particular to have a really well-made racket. Fortunately there are now so many good makers that it is a player's own fault if she is not suitably equipped. It may be a little more expensive to buy a really first-class racket; but the few extra shillings are well worth while if you mean to take up the game seriously, and to get out of it all the enjoyment you can.
Over the last twelve years, Stephan Ehritt-Vanc and Andreea Ehritt-Vanc, founders of the Pro-M International Tennis Academy, have played in or coached several players in more than sixty Grand Slams. In their guidebook, Pro Rules, they offer proven principles and a set of values that can help tennis players of all ages improve their game, achieve goals, and ultimately maximize their potential. You can learn how to - act like a pro in any situation; - deal with bad calls; - focus despite distractions; - analyze, predict, and respect an opponent; - strike the balance between self-confidence and overconfidence; and - live in the present tense. Pro Rules relies on the lessons of two experienced tennis professionals to share an innovative way of looking at life--both on and off the court--that can guide tennis players to find their professional core, learn control, and master their game by following their instincts with mastery and precision.
In tennis your biggest challenge isn't the opponent that is standing on the other side of the net. It's the pounding of your heart in your chest, the aching of your lungs, the weakness in your legs and the little voice inside you that says, "I can't." But you don't listen to the nonsense, you work harder. As that voice starts to fade away, you hear another faint whisper of a voice starting to say, "I can." That's when you realize the person you thought you were is no match for the person you really are. That's dominating tennis. Learning to play tennis at a high level is easier than you think. You have to develop strokes, strength and the correct mindset to become a winner. In this book, you do it all. We've developed a 60-day program that takes you day-by-day to bring your game to top performance. If you're willing to put in the work for about an hour a day, we'll give you the tools to make you a much better overall player in just 60 days. It's that simple. Don't listen to coaches that say "You aren't good enough" or "You need to develop your serve," they're missing the boat, that's loser talk. You need a plan that takes you from your current ability level and makes you dramatically better. It's not about going to the courts and hitting hundreds of serves every day or getting lessons five times a week, it's about a system that makes you a better athlete and therefore a better tennis player. We all get nervous when we know we have tryouts or a big tournament coming up. We do this because we fear the unknown or feel we aren't prepared. But armed with a plan beforehand you can limit those nerves and use them as weapons. We'll be the ones to show you how. The Workouts: Working with the top tennis pros we've developed a 60-day program that makes you a champion. The program is divided into 2 main phases: Phase One: days 1-30 Core, Balance and Stroke Development In this phase we tighten up your stokes while giving you exercises that develop correct technique and get you prepared for aggressive winning tennis. Core and balance work is very important to get your body ready for the challenges ahead. Much of tennis is about balance. If your body is balanced you're ready to face your biggest weaknesses. The core works hand-in-hand with your balance, if you have a strong core, you can keep your body in better balance. Phase Two: days 31-60 Power and Aggressive Performance With Phase One under your belt you're ready to start getting more precise and adding power to your shots and strength to your body. This is where most tennis instructors fall short. We take you to the next level day-by-day making you a better tennis player and athlete. At this point you start to notice more control over your shots. In Phase Two we take the hard work from Phase One and push you further. As you work at a rapid pace on your shots, turning your body into a sculpted machine that moves along the court with grace and elegance, your friends will be shocked with the improvement. We won't be. This is the book to get you there.
Authentic Tennis uses a holistic feel based approach to tennis. This Authentic approach makes the feel of the swing primary, while the mechanical method tends to make body mechanics primary. The mechanical method to the tennis swing emphasizes the form of the swing over the feel of the swing. "Feel" is something that cannot be seen. Each person's "feel" is completely unique and personal and the mechanical method does not recognize its immeasurable value. For Authentic Tennis, "feel" is its cornerstone and serves as the foundation of swing mastery. "Feel" is an individual process that makes it un-teachable through a mechanical system which separates the mind from the body. However, through mindfulness and awareness centered consciousness, "feel" becomes an integrating process that allows for natural mind/body. Authentic Tennis was written to help the millions of coaches, instructors, and tennis players unlock their unlimited potential and to tap into one's natural state of learning. No matter what your skill level, this revolutionary approach to tennis is perfect for anyone who strives to reach their personal best on and off the court.

Steven Ryuse's book provides an interesting and insightful memoir about growing up black in the world of white tennis. A winner all the way, this book offers a universal feel as an intelligent study of racism and a thoughtful look at what it takes to succeed in sports. The author discusses his life as he grew up in a small-town white community. His initial shock of racism comes in third grade when he suddenly realizes he is in two different worlds. The author poignantly and powerfully engages the reader in his struggles from that point forward. The book conveys an important message that social interaction, rather than biology, may play a larger role in a person's self- identity. Beginning each chapter with a tennis precept keeps the reader engaged, as well as the discussions of tennis greats. The author shows how he made it as a black person in the white world of tennis, and he does it with grace and dignity. Anyone interested in books about race or sports will latch onto this book.
