Time and Trace: Multidisciplinary Investigations of Temporality (Hardcover): Sabine Gross, Steve Ostovich Time and Trace: Multidisciplinary Investigations of Temporality (Hardcover)
Sabine Gross, Steve Ostovich
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Time holds an enduring fascination for humans. Time and Trace investigates the human experience and awareness of time and time's impact on a wide range of cultural, psychological, and artistic phenomena, from reproductive politics and temporal logic to music and theater, from law to sustainability, from memory to the Vikings. The volume presents selected essays from the 15th triennial conference of the International Society for the Study of Time from the arts (literature, music, theater), history, law, philosophy, science (psychology, biology), and mathematics. Taken together, they pursue the trace of time into the past and future, tracing temporal processes and exploring the traces left by time in individual experience as well as culture and society. Contributors are: Michael Crawford, Orit Hilewicz, Rosemary Huisman, John S. Kafka, Erica W. Magnus, Arkadiusz Misztal, Carlos Montemayor, Stephanie Nelson, Peter Ohrstrom, Jo Alyson Parker, Thomas Ploug, Helen Sills, Lasse C. A. Sonne, Raji C. Steineck, and Frederick Turner.

Already in 1854, Henry David Thoreau had declared in Walden that "Most men appear never to have considered what a house is" (225). Like Thoreau, many other renowned American writers have considered what houses are and, particularly, what houses do, and they have created fictional dwellings that function not only as settings, but as actual central characters in their works. The volume is specifically concerned with the structure, the organization, and the objects inside houses, and argues that the space defined by rooms and their contents influences the consciousness, the imaginations, and the experiences of the humans who inhabit them. Contributors are: Cristina Alsina Risquez, Rodrigo Andres, Vicent Cucarella-Ramon, Arturo Corujo, Mar Gallego, Ian Green, Michael Jonik, Wyn Kelley, Cynthia Lytle, Carme Manuel, Paula Martin-Salvan, Elena Ortells, Eva Puyuelo-Urena, Dolores Resano, and Cynthia Stretch.

This book is based on real life experiences and fictional imaginative visions of the author. These poems reflect the mind of a young adult growing up in many different aspects of life. There are poems of pain, love, sorrow, ambition, race and many other factors that makeup the author's thinking process. "As a writer, one's thoughts an beliefs change overtime, tomorrow the way I see things will change but that's how evolution occurs. Some poems are a documentation of those changes, and as my mindset enhances, so does its thoughts upon which it sits over time."

Patches of My Life - Youth in the South (Hardcover): Kenneth D. Fly Patches of My Life - Youth in the South (Hardcover)
Kenneth D. Fly
R467 Discovery Miles 4 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Kenneth Fly went from town living to the life of a farm boy during the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s. It was a life of hard work without luxury. Instead of watching television and playing video games, he grew up working in the fields of North Carolina, handling firearms, operating machinery, and participating in other activities and tasks that are foreign to the youngsters, youth, and even men of today. In this series of personal narratives and anecdotes, Fly recalls those days with detail and humor. Life wasn't always easy, but his mother did whatever was necessary to make a good home and loving environment for her family. His dad was a hardworking master carpenter whose behavior showed anyone watching that life is about morals, hard work, and self-respect. The Fly family is special because they so rarely complained and always managed to stay happy. For them, life wasn't fancy, but relying on common sense and each other made it sweet.

The Rise and Fall of a Great Nation (Hardcover): John Gondeck The Rise and Fall of a Great Nation (Hardcover)
John Gondeck
R633 Discovery Miles 6 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nations have risen to power through their might and driven by greed they have held many people in bondage. When the workforce was limited, they bought and sold slaves. Slavery is still taking place on the continent of Africa, and no one is there protesting. Politics It is all about politics and the political game that is being played out in the greatest nation that the world has ever known could be its demise. We will examine the foundation that was laid by those who came from Great Britain and with only thirteen colonies became the ruler of the seas and skies with an army that is unmatched anywhere. Politics Yes, politics played by men and women desiring power and wealth have brought us the very brink of collapse as they tend to forget who it was that gave so much to so few in the beginning. Thousands upon thousands have given their lives for the freedoms that we have in this land, and yet there are many who do not care, preferring a socialist form of government. But there is still hope for a failing nation.

R682 Discovery Miles 6 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Career Suicide is about the realities of working in the contemporary art world for most professional artists, the thousands of unfashionable, little-known and underpaid ones who have to do all manner of unfashionable, little-known and underpaid things to survive. It will also answer some of the questions that outsiders often ask about contemporary art, and some that they don't: Why do some artists spend their whole careers doing stupid stuff like mutilating mannequins or painting old bits of wood with baffling phrases? Why does everyone in the art world get paid, apart from the artists? Why do most art students spend years doing their MA, closely followed by them doing sweet FA? Who are the HoWiAs, and what the hell do they think they're doing? How and why did a bunch of paintings that looked like vandalised portraits of SpongeBob get taken so seriously at an international art fair?

PROLOGUE: Michael Izzo was born on 6/3/1987 in San Diego, CA. to be put up for adoption; but, was quickly moved back to LI, New York for reasons unknown... Michael's Grandparents were of German, Jewish decent, and his mother was the 1st generation American. Erna Avramavich was born and lived in Germany from April 8, 1928 to the mid 1950's. Erna Avram, a child of 12 moved solely to America, fleeing Germany, and escaped the damage caused by Adolph Hitler; as it's been told. Hitler's primary mission, was to kill all Jews & oppressors; because he was consumed by the Devil's mission to prevent the 2nd birth of Jesus Christ. Although, his motives are widely debated. However, God knew of this treachery and decided it would be best to disguise Jesus' new ancestors as German-Jews. Allowing Michael to be born one day in a free country, ridden of persecution to uncover his truth of being Jesus Christ. Similar to Jesus Christ, Michael Izzo also became quickly known at the age of 12; when he was published in the local town's newspaper: As a well known, local aggressive roller skater. In addition, no formal records are kept of Michael's teenage or young adult life; other than schooling and some medical records. However, Michael Izzo being who he is in nature, quickly started questioning & rebelling against society. As a result, he would fall into the hands of the law and even worse; the Devil & his mighty temptations. However, being as blessed and powerful as he is through trials, error, and sheer faith; Michael kept strong and asked God to forgive him in every testament of his faith. As of today, there are no official records of Michael's past dealings with criminal behavior or acts of Demonic pleasures. However, Michael finds the need for speaking only the truth through his music: as a form of forgiveness, for such trials of faith for Gods Will. He quoted to me - "I believe that there are no records of these days; meaning after turning 12, from than and now; because God didn't want the world to remember me for the bad times, only for the good ones. It is only on Earth that we SIN; but in Heaven we are Sinless." In Jesus' first existence, his mission was to bridge the gap between Heaven & Earth, and to be crucified in the process. Michael's mission is to finish what was started, by defeating Satan's evil eternally. In this autobiography, we shall embark upon the lost chapters of the life and times of Jesus Christ from age 13-26; with insights of Michael's proposed plans for himself, after his current age of 26. Such plans, can only be revealed with time and through the permission of God. However, Michael shall reveal his current mission to us; which is to salvage the remaining souls of humanity, during the end of days. Whilst destroying the Devil or known as the anti-Christ; creating, an eternal kingdom of peace in both Heaven and on the new Earth, AKA New Jerusalem. Aside from his lost journals; we shall see his prophecy revealed, through Michael's music of scriptures. This novel, shall uncover many secrets & truths of what is to come for the world; during the end of times, in order for a new world to begin. These truths, shall describe the outcome for all things; including, righteous followers of Jesus Christ, followers of the Devil, as well as everyone else thereof... In the bible, under (Luke 21:7-25) it states the following: (21:16) - "And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, & brethren & kinsfolk, & friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death." (21:17) - "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake." (21:18) - "But there shall not an hair of your head perish." (21:20) - "And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh." (21:21) - "Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto."

Aby Warburg and Anti-semitism - Political Perspectives on Images and Culture (Hardcover): Charlotte Schoell-Glass Aby Warburg and Anti-semitism - Political Perspectives on Images and Culture (Hardcover)
Charlotte Schoell-Glass
R1,605 Discovery Miles 16 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a landmark study on Aby Warburg's life and work, translated into English. In ""Aby Warburg and Anti-Semitism"", Charlotte Schoell-Glass provides an unprecedented look at the life and writings of cultural critic Aby Warburg through the prism of Warburg's little-known political views. Schoell-Glass argues provocatively based on archival research that Warburg's work and teachings developed as a reaction to the growing anti-Semitism in Germany, which he saw as a threat to classical education and university scholarship. Translated into English for the first time, ""Aby Warburg and Anti-Semitism"" sheds much needed light on Warburg's views on Judaism and the politics of his time.Aby Warburg, scion of a well-known Jewish banking family in Hamburg, sacrificed his birthright to pursue a career as a private scholar. As an independent art historian, he devoted himself almost exclusively to reinterpreting the revival of antiquity within the Renaissance, urging other art historians to approach their work as a brand of the larger study of image making and philosophy. In this study, Schoell-Glass examines Warburg's most influential essays on Durer, Rembrandt, and the Sassetti Chapel and his most innovative concepts - the accessories of motion, the pathos formula, and the afterlife of antiquity - to illustrate how Warburg persistently showed a deep concern over a disappointing and unstable outside world within his own work. Schoell-Glass shows how Warburg attempts to make a response to anti-Semitism the only way he knew how, despite his awareness of the diminishing societal relevance of that response. From this study of Warburg, Schoell-Glass produces a multilayered case study of the encounter between twentieth-century politics and scholarship. Art historians, German historians, and scholars of Jewish studies and cultural studies will be grateful for this volume.

Plundered Empire - Acquiring Antiquities from Ottoman Lands (Hardcover): Michael Greenhalgh Plundered Empire - Acquiring Antiquities from Ottoman Lands (Hardcover)
Michael Greenhalgh
R7,540 Discovery Miles 75 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book concentrates on the sometimes Greek but largely Roman survivals many travellers set out to see and perhaps possess throughout the immense Ottoman Empire, on what were eastward and southward extensions of the Grand Tour. Europeans were curious about the Empire, Christianity's great rival for centuries, and plenty of information on its antiquities was available, offered here via lengthy quotations. Most accounts of the history of collecting and museums concentrate on the European end. Plundered Empire details how and where antiquities were sought, uncovered, bartered, paid for or stolen, and any tribulations in getting them home. The book provides evidence for the continuing debate about the ethics of museum collections, with 19th century international competition the spur to spectacular acquisitions.

New Nonfiction Film - Art, Poetics, and Documentary Theory (Hardcover): Dara Waldron New Nonfiction Film - Art, Poetics, and Documentary Theory (Hardcover)
Dara Waldron
R4,308 Discovery Miles 43 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

New Nonfiction Film: Art, Poetics and Documentary Theory is the first book to offer a lengthy examination of the relationship between fiction and documentary from the perspective of art and poetics. The premise of the book is to propose a new category of nonfiction film that is distinguished from - as opposed to being conflated with - the documentary film in its multiple historical guises; a premise explored in case-studies of films by distinguished artists and filmmakers (Abbas Kiarostami, Ben Rivers, Chantal Akerman, Ben Russell Pat Collins and Gideon Koppel). The book builds a case for this new category of film, calling it the 'new nonfiction film,' and argues, in the process, that this kind of film works to dismantle the old distinctions between fiction and documentary film and therefore the axioms of Film and Cinema Studies as a discipline of study.
