Artists ask questions when they make art - and viewers ask questions when they look at art. This gently provocative book provides an engaging way for young people to start asking and answering questions for themselves. Why is art full of naked people? is structured around 22 questions, each one tackled over two spreads. The opening spread explores the question and answer, inviting the reader to study a full-bleed image of an important artwork. The second spread shows a selection of work on the theme from across history, showing how art can run with an idea to hugely different ends. The tone of the text is fresh and informal but not flippant.

Silas Marner (Paperback): George Eliot Silas Marner (Paperback)
George Eliot; Adapted by Mark Wheeller
R288 Discovery Miles 2 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This classic short novel gets a classic Mark Wheeller treatment. An adaptation of a George Eliot novel might seem something of a departure, but as the play contains only words used in the novel the production exhibits narrative characteristics of other Mark Wheeller plays. He has created a beautifully taut and compelling script with immense skill. Karen Robson. Southern Daily Echo. Silas Marner, a member of a strict religious community, is wrongly accused of theft and is forced to move to the faraway village of Raveloe. A robbery at his new home leaves Marner without his hard earned gold and in the depths of depression. A mysterious, drug addicted woman is later found dead in the woods outside Marner's cottage. That same night he thinks his gold has returned... but it proves to be something very different... Silas Marner was originally performed as a Promenade production. It offers opportunities for imaginative staging that has become the hallmark for all the best known Wheellerplays. It will serve as a great read around the class script in English lessons because of its narrative style. The book is one of those allowed on various English GCSE Syllabi and is a set text for Edexcel GCSE English.

Susan Hayward, Ginette Vincendeau
R4,501 Discovery Miles 45 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work looks at classic French films, from the 1930s to the 1990s, providing detailed analyses of 22 major landmarks in French cinema. Embracing classic thrillers such as Renoir's "Le Crime de Monsieur Lange", popular comedies like "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot" , or New Wave masterpieces like Godard's "A Bout de Souffle", contributors employ a variety of methods of textual analysis to investigate the different ways in which these and other films textually inscribe and rework a variety of other cultural and historical texts. Approaching from a variety of disciplines - history, literary studies, semiotics, psychoanalysis - contributors examine films within the context of French film and literature, Hollywood, and the profound changes in French society taking place through the twentieth century. This revised second edition includes: new studies of controversial classics such as Jean-Pierre Melville's "Le Samourai" and Betrand Blier's "Les Valseuses"; articles on acclaimed 90s films "Nikita", "Cyrano de Bergerac", and "La Haine"; and a fully revised introduction and bibliography.

Telling Pieces - Art As Literacy in Middle School Classes (Paperback): Peggy Albers, Sharon Murphy Telling Pieces - Art As Literacy in Middle School Classes (Paperback)
Peggy Albers, Sharon Murphy
R895 Discovery Miles 8 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Telling Pieces" is an exploration of how pre-adolescent middle-school children develop a knowledge and understanding of the conventions of art (art as literacy) and how they use this knowledge to create representations of their lives in a small midwestern U.S. town.
Beginning with an overview of social semiotics and emergent literacy theorizing, the authors set the stage for their study of sixth graders involved in art. A galleria of children's artworks is presented, allowing readers/viewers to consider these texts independent of the authors' interpretations of them. Then, set against the galleria is the story of the community and school contexts in which the artworks are produced--contexts in which racism, homophobia, and the repression of creativity are often the norm. The interpretation the authors bring to bear on the artworks reveals stories that the artworks may or may not tell on their own. But the tales of artistic literacy achievement are counterbalanced by reflection about the content of the artworks produced, because the artworks reveal the impossibility for students to imagine beyond the situational bounds of racism, homophobia, and religiosity. The authors conclude by raising questions about the kinds of conditions that make literacy in art possible. In doing so, they explore selected alternative models and, in addition, ask readers to consider the implications of the ideological issues underlying teaching children how to represent their ideas. They also advocate for a participatory pedagogy of possibility founded on ethical relational principles in the creation and interpretation of visual text.
Of particular interest to school professionals, researchers, and graduate students in literacy or art education, this pioneering book:
* brings together the fields of art education and literacy education through its focus on how middle school students come to work with and understand the semiotic systems,
* introduces sociolinguistic, sociological, and postmodernist perspectives to thinking about children's work with art--adding a new dimension to the psychological and developmental descriptions that have tended to dominate thinking in the field,
* includes a galleria of 40 examples of children's artwork, providing a unique opportunity for readers/viewers to interpret and consider the artwork of the sixth graders independent of the authors' interpretations,
* presents descriptions of art teaching in process,
* gives considerable attention to the interpretation of the children's artworks and the influences that contribute to the content they represent, and
* considers varying models of art education along with the implications of introducing new representational possibilities.

Young Adult and Canonical Literature - Pairing and Teaching (Hardcover): Paula Greathouse, Victor Malo-Juvera Young Adult and Canonical Literature - Pairing and Teaching (Hardcover)
Paula Greathouse, Victor Malo-Juvera
R2,210 Discovery Miles 22 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last decade alone, the world has changed in seismic ways as marriage equality has been ruled on by the supreme court, social justice issues such as #metoo and BlackLivesMatter have arisen, and issues of immigration and deportation have come to the forefront of politics across the globe. Thus, there is a need for an updated text that shares strategies for combining canonical and young adult literature that reflects the changes society has - and continues to - experience. The purpose of our collection is to offer secondary (6-12) teachers engaging ideas and approaches for pairing young adult and canonical novels to provide unique examinations of topics that teaching either text in isolation could not afford. Our collection does not center canonical texts and most chapters show how both texts complement each other rather than the young adult text being only an extension of the canonical. Within each volume, the chapters are organized chronologically according to the publication date of the canonical text. The pairings offered in this collection allow for comparisons in some cases, for extensions in others, and for critique in all.

On the Subject of Drama (Paperback): David Hornbrook On the Subject of Drama (Paperback)
David Hornbrook; Foreword by Stephen Daldry
R1,571 Discovery Miles 15 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although drama is part of the National Curriculum for English at all Key Stages, little guidance currently exists on how teachers can effectively integrate this into the curriculum. Often drama is used only for Personal and Social Education - to explore issues such as bullying or for the "end of term production". Although these activities are valuable in their own right, children also need to be encouraged to be play writers and play watchers if they are to discover and appreciate drama in all its forms throughout the world. In this collection of essays, David Hornbrook and a team of contributors focus on practical strategies for developing the drama curriculum in primary and secondary schools. Although the book focuses on the content of the curriculum, the theoretical foundations underpinning these strategies are also clearly explained. The book is divided into three sections: teaching and learning - the contributors consider the role of drama as a world phenomenon and the skills and knowledge needed to develop a coherent, multicultural drama curriculum; creating and performing drama in school - how can teachers effectively involve young people with the three constituent elements

Music in the Early Years (Paperback): Joanna Glover, Susan Young Music in the Early Years (Paperback)
Joanna Glover, Susan Young
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Music in the Early Years is for teachers working across the 3 to 8 age phase who want to make music integral to the life of the nursery and early years classroom.
Music has often been taught as if it were different, something outside the mainstream curriculum, with teaching approaches quite at odds with early years work. This book takes children's development as its basis and works towards building a music pedagogy within early years practice. A readiness to listen, observe and reflect is central to the practice which threads through the book.
Based on the authors' extensive experience and drawing on that of other teachers and researchers, lots of well-tried, practical ideas show how teachers, parents and carers can help children fulfil their music potential. Sample activities model ways of working with children and have been written in such a way that they can be substituted with other material and adapted for further use. Earlier and later stages of learning and progression are described as a basis for matching activities with children's learning needs, as well as a companion book, Primary Music: Later Years.
