From the author of Music Is... Brandon Stosuy comes a second pitch-perfect board book that's a kid-friendly music history lesson--perfect for the little record collectors in your life. From music writer and The Creative Independent/Kickstarter Editor in Chief, Brandon Stosuy, comes a new board book called We Are Music that dives into the history of music. From classical to blues to jazz to country to rock to punk to rap to hip hop, there is one important thread that weaves through every song that has ever been created: us.
Artists ask questions when they make art - and viewers ask questions when they look at art. This gently provocative book provides an engaging way for young people to start asking and answering questions for themselves. Why is art full of naked people? is structured around 22 questions, each one tackled over two spreads. The opening spread explores the question and answer, inviting the reader to study a full-bleed image of an important artwork. The second spread shows a selection of work on the theme from across history, showing how art can run with an idea to hugely different ends. The tone of the text is fresh and informal but not flippant.

This classic short novel gets a classic Mark Wheeller treatment. An adaptation of a George Eliot novel might seem something of a departure, but as the play contains only words used in the novel the production exhibits narrative characteristics of other Mark Wheeller plays. He has created a beautifully taut and compelling script with immense skill. Karen Robson. Southern Daily Echo. Silas Marner, a member of a strict religious community, is wrongly accused of theft and is forced to move to the faraway village of Raveloe. A robbery at his new home leaves Marner without his hard earned gold and in the depths of depression. A mysterious, drug addicted woman is later found dead in the woods outside Marner's cottage. That same night he thinks his gold has returned... but it proves to be something very different... Silas Marner was originally performed as a Promenade production. It offers opportunities for imaginative staging that has become the hallmark for all the best known Wheellerplays. It will serve as a great read around the class script in English lessons because of its narrative style. The book is one of those allowed on various English GCSE Syllabi and is a set text for Edexcel GCSE English.
This book is of great interest to all teachers and student teachers who wish to harness the power of drama and story for the purposes of social and moral education and in support of the National Literacy Strategy. It provides documented schemes of work in the form of lesson plans for each of the primary year groups, with clearly defined objectives and criteria for assessment, a step-by-step guidance through the drama work, clear links with individual objectives specified by the National Literacy Strategy, and further classroom activities to support the objectives of a curriculum for social and moral education. In proposing an analytical framework for the contribution drama can make to the moral education of children, the author draws upon classroom examples and provides teachers with straightforward guidance to support their own whole-school planning.
This work looks at classic French films, from the 1930s to the 1990s, providing detailed analyses of 22 major landmarks in French cinema. Embracing classic thrillers such as Renoir's "Le Crime de Monsieur Lange", popular comedies like "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot" , or New Wave masterpieces like Godard's "A Bout de Souffle", contributors employ a variety of methods of textual analysis to investigate the different ways in which these and other films textually inscribe and rework a variety of other cultural and historical texts. Approaching from a variety of disciplines - history, literary studies, semiotics, psychoanalysis - contributors examine films within the context of French film and literature, Hollywood, and the profound changes in French society taking place through the twentieth century. This revised second edition includes: new studies of controversial classics such as Jean-Pierre Melville's "Le Samourai" and Betrand Blier's "Les Valseuses"; articles on acclaimed 90s films "Nikita", "Cyrano de Bergerac", and "La Haine"; and a fully revised introduction and bibliography.
"Telling Pieces" is an exploration of how pre-adolescent
middle-school children develop a knowledge and understanding of the
conventions of art (art as literacy) and how they use this
knowledge to create representations of their lives in a small
midwestern U.S. town.
In the last decade alone, the world has changed in seismic ways as marriage equality has been ruled on by the supreme court, social justice issues such as #metoo and BlackLivesMatter have arisen, and issues of immigration and deportation have come to the forefront of politics across the globe. Thus, there is a need for an updated text that shares strategies for combining canonical and young adult literature that reflects the changes society has - and continues to - experience. The purpose of our collection is to offer secondary (6-12) teachers engaging ideas and approaches for pairing young adult and canonical novels to provide unique examinations of topics that teaching either text in isolation could not afford. Our collection does not center canonical texts and most chapters show how both texts complement each other rather than the young adult text being only an extension of the canonical. Within each volume, the chapters are organized chronologically according to the publication date of the canonical text. The pairings offered in this collection allow for comparisons in some cases, for extensions in others, and for critique in all.

This work is intended for teachers working across the 7-11 age group who want to make music integral to the life of the classroom. It is the companion volume in a two-book set that aims to move forward the teaching of music with a "best practice in music" philosophy. While building on the National Curriculum, this book offers more challenge and depth on the subject both through practical ideas and by encouraging teachers to examine key issues. The two books acknowledge the very different developmental needs of children in the two age ranges ("Music in the Early Years" covers 3-6 year olds), and the different environments in which they are taught. Although the books have been conceived together, they also stand as independent guides.

Although drama is part of the National Curriculum for English at all Key Stages, little guidance currently exists on how teachers can effectively integrate this into the curriculum. Often drama is used only for Personal and Social Education - to explore issues such as bullying or for the "end of term production". Although these activities are valuable in their own right, children also need to be encouraged to be play writers and play watchers if they are to discover and appreciate drama in all its forms throughout the world. In this collection of essays, David Hornbrook and a team of contributors focus on practical strategies for developing the drama curriculum in primary and secondary schools. Although the book focuses on the content of the curriculum, the theoretical foundations underpinning these strategies are also clearly explained. The book is divided into three sections: teaching and learning - the contributors consider the role of drama as a world phenomenon and the skills and knowledge needed to develop a coherent, multicultural drama curriculum; creating and performing drama in school - how can teachers effectively involve young people with the three constituent elements
