This revised Student Edition includes an introduction by Bess
Rowen, Visiting Assistant Professor at Villanova University, US,
which looks in particular at the play's treatment of rape,
vulnerable people, mental institutions (especially in connection to
Williams's own family), sexuality and sexual desire. A Streetcar
Named Desire shows a turbulent confrontation between traditional
values in the American South - an old-world graciousness and beauty
running decoratively to seed - set against the rough-edged,
aggressive materialism of the new world. Through the vividly
characterised figures of Southern belle Blanche Dubois, seeking
refuge from physical ugliness in decayed gentility, and her brutal
brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski, Tennessee Williams dramatises his
sense of the South's past as still active and often destructive in
modern America. METHUEN DRAMA STUDENT EDITIONS are expertly
annotated texts of a wide range of plays from the modern and
classic repertoires. A well as the complete text of the play
itself, this volume contains: * A chronology of the play and the
playwright's life and work * An introductory discussion of the
social, political, cultural and economic context in which the play
was originally conceived and created * A succinct overview of the
creation processes followed and subsequent performance history of
the piece * An analysis of, and commentary on, some of the major
themes and specific issues addressed by the text * A bibliography
of suggested primary and secondary materials for further study

Little People, BIG DREAMS!
Part of the critically acclaimed Little People, BIG DREAMS series,
discover the life of David Bowie, the starman who dazzled audiences
with his music. As a child, young David lived with his family in a
tiny house on an ordinary street, but he had a head full of songs
and ideas. At school he was loved music and dance, and he was
inspired by his brother's rock and jazz records to pick up the
saxophone and start writing his own songs. After earning his
stripes in some of the coolest bands in London, David splashed onto
the solo scene. David knew that to be a star, he had to combine
great songs with great performace, and so from this point on he
took on a range of shapeshifting personas, from Ziggy Stardust to
the Thin White Duke, but really, he was just being himself,
expressing his art on the stage. His songwriting talent and musical
skill made him one of rock and roll's all-time greatest artists.
This moving book features stylish and quirky illustrations and
extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with
historical photos and a detailed profile of the musician's life.

Growing Musicians: Teaching Music in Middle School and Beyond
focuses on teaching adolescents within the context of a music
classroom, regardless of content area (orchestra, band, choir, or
general music). It provides a look at the importance of music
courses in the lives of adolescents as they navigate the path
between being a child and an adult. As every music student is
completely unique, there is no one-size-fits-all prescriptive way
of working with this age group. Rather, music educators must
approach adolescents with high musical standards and aspirations to
learn and achieve within music; a willingness to honor the
individuality of each adolescent musician; a sense of structure,
but an ability to be flexible; a desire to foster and promote a
safe classroom environment where students feel empowered to be
themselves and speak openly about what they think and believe; an
understanding that music classes are not only safe places where
students learn how to become better musicians but also better
people through musical experiences focused on humanity and empathy;
and a dose of humor, or at least the ability to acknowledge that
adolescents are extremely funny whether or not they realize it. In
addition, this book encourages pre-service and practicing music
educators to mindfully examine and better understand their own
teaching practices.
