R836 R731 Discovery Miles 7 310 Save R105 (13%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A beautiful collection of paintings, drawings and reflections on creatures, our constant companions, from the masterful narrative artist Shaun Tan. A creature does not necessarily represent one thing or another; it just is. A mysterious being in a mysterious world, much like you and me, trying to fit in, trying to be unique, or just trying to make sense of things as best we can, to exist. World-renowned artist Shaun Tan turns his hand to the theme of creatures. The first thing Shaun ever drew as a child was a creature, and they are still at the heart of his work. This volume collects together unseen and stand-alone drawings and paintings, along with rich and thoughtful commentary from Shaun on his inspirations. Delving deep into the timeless allure of non-human creatures, and what they might tell us about our 'normal' human selves, this book is perfect for artists, writers and dreamers alike.

Deborah VanderLinde Blair, Kimberly A. McCord
R4,003 Discovery Miles 40 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Exceptional Music Pedagogy for Children with Exceptionalities: International Perspectives offers readers in music education, music therapy, and music in special education communities a new, important, and globally-informed resource for effective music pedagogies in theory and practice. Volume editors Deborah Blair and Kimberly McCord have assembled here a collection of never-before-published chapters written by a diverse and international set of teachers and researchers in music education for children with exceptionalities. Each working outward from their own national perspectives, the chapter authors explore the histories of legislative initiatives, discuss the implementation of both mandates and teacher led creative strategies, and provide a vast array of pedagogical suggestions and scenarios that support teachers and communities who work with special learners. Featuring rich descriptions of music teaching and learning approaches in concert with scenarios of how practices play out in the classrooms across the globe, the book gives readers the opportunity to learn from other global settings and, on this basis, to reflect and re-envision the ways that teaching and learning may be fostered in their own music classrooms or research settings. Chapters include U. S. and international special education law, social justice and disability in music, using the Orff Approach in inclusive and self-contained classes, assistive technology and use of innovative technologies to engage children and adults in active music making. In addition, the book offers novice and veteran teachers and teacher educators alike a sophisticated understanding of specific disabilities and strategies for music classroom teaching and learning. Throughout, chapter authors provide theoretical frames with applications for practice that readers will be able to connect to their own educational contexts. With chapters from such diverse music education communities as Finland, Taiwan, Ireland, and Germany, the book adds important new perspectives. The authors and editors represent a wide range of pedagogical approaches for learners in a variety of contexts, and this book is an important, expansive collection of practical expertise, an invaluable resource to the special music education community across the globe.

Louis loves to watch birds. He takes care of injured birds and studies how they look and how they move. His father wants him to become an engineer, but Louis dreams of being a bird artist. To achieve this dream, he must practice, practice, practice. He learns from the art of John James Audubon. But as Louis grows up, he begins to draw and paint living, flying birds in their natural habitats. Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927) is now known as the father of modern bird art. He traveled with many scientific expeditions all over the world. His best-known works-paintings for habitat exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History in New York-are still beloved by visitors today. His art helped to encourage wildlife conservation, inspiring people to celebrate and protect the world of wings. Poems by Newbery Honor-winning author Margarita Engle and illustrations by Aliona Bereghici capture the life of Louis Fuertes and the deep sense of wonder that he felt when he painted the sky.

Narrative Inquiry in Music Education - Troubling Certainty (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Margaret S. Barrett, Sandra L. Stauffer Narrative Inquiry in Music Education - Troubling Certainty (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Margaret S. Barrett, Sandra L. Stauffer
R3,018 Discovery Miles 30 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Margaret S. Barrett and Sandra L. Stauffer We live in a "congenial moment for stories" (Pinnegar & Daynes, 2007, p. 30), a time in which narrative has taken up a place in the "landscape" of inquiry in the social sciences. This renewed interest in storying and stories as both process and product (as eld text and research text) of inquiry may be attributed to various methodological and conceptual "turns," including the linguistic and cultural, that have taken place in the humanities and social sciences over the past decades. The purpose of this book is to explore the "narrative turn" in music education, to - amine the uses of narrative inquiry for music education, and to cultivate ground for narrative inquiry to seed and ourish alongside other methodological approaches in music education. In a discipline whose early research strength was founded on an alignment with thesocialsciences, particularlythepsychometrictradition, oneofthekeychallenges for those embarking on narrative inquiry in music education is to ensure that its use is more than that of a "musical ornament," an elaboration on the established themes of psychometric inquiry, those of measurement and certainty. We suggest that narrative inquiry is more than a "turn" (as noun), "a melodic embellishment that is played around a given note" (Encarta World English Dictionary, 2007, n. p. ); it is more than elaborationon a position, the adding of extra notes to make a melody more beautiful or interesting.

C. Victor Fung
R3,476 Discovery Miles 34 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Moving back through Dewey, Heidegger, Nietzsche, and Rousseau, the lineage of Western music education finds its origins in Plato and Pythagoras. Yet theories not rooted in the ancient Greek tradition are all but absent. A Way of Music Education provides a much-needed intervention, integrating ancient Chinese thought into the canon of music education in a structured, systematized, and philosophical way. The book's three central sources - the Yijing (The Book of Changes), Confucianism, and Daoism - inform author C. Victor Fung's argument: that the human being exists as an entity at the center of an organismic world in which all things and events, including music and music education, are connected. Fung ultimately proposes a new educational philosophy based on three key ideas in Chinese thought: change, balance, and liberation. A unique work, A Way of Music Education offers a universal approach engrained in a specific and ancient cultural tradition.

At a young age, Yo-Yo Ma discovered a remarkable gift for the cello, playing Bach from memory by age four. His technique was far beyond his years, but even as he grew and became a world-class musician—studying at Juilliard, performing at Carnegie Hall at a young age, even playing on television before the president of the United States—he wanted to use his gift for something deeper, something bigger.

As he asked question after question, trying to understand his place in the world, he discovered something that every culture has in common: music.

Ma decided that he would spend his life not only performing for others, but learning from other cultures’ musical traditions and finding ways to unite people. Even as he dedicated himself to humanitarian work around the world, Ma also dedicated himself to teaching a new generation of young cellists to play with their whole hearts, bodies, and souls, like he does—how to find the music inside themselves.

From James Howe, bestselling author of Bunnicula, and Jack Wong, award-winning author/illustrator of When You Can Swim, comes the story of legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who is special not only because of his unmatched talent but also his curious mind and compassionate heart. Powerfully told and stunningly illustrated, this biography will inspire readers to discover the gifts inside us all.

Back matter includes an author’s and an illustrator’s note, a timeline of Ma’s life, and resources to learn more about his life and work.
