A Short Guide to the New Silk Road (Hardcover, New edition): Adam Nobis A Short Guide to the New Silk Road (Hardcover, New edition)
Adam Nobis
R910 Discovery Miles 9 100 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Most social scientists are familiar with the concept of the Silk Road. In recent years, however, it is the New Silk Road that has been on the lips of many. This short guide is addressed to all those eager to learn more about this new road. The New Silk Road resembles the old road in that it represents an ensemble of relationships and connections among several distant places. The author depicts some of them and presents people, institutions and projects connected to the road. Moreover, the various meanings and values attributed to the new road by different people across the world are explored. The book seeks to reveal the implications and meanings the New Silk Road has for the world we inhabit and for its future. "Adam Nobis's [...] is a much-needed, relevant and interesting publication. It is relevant because it addresses processes unfolding before our eyes and impacting our real, socio-cultural world. It is interesting, for it discusses these processes in an original way and competently combines synthesis with analysis. It is much-needed as it offers the readers a wealth of detailed information about the developments it depicts." Leszek Kopciuch, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin "This modestly-sized book is an outcome of the author's painstakingly meticulous effort to put together scattered pieces into an imposing mosaic that is the New Silk Road. [...] With Nobis's guide in hand, the reader can feel at ease traversing, both physically and imaginatively, the paths that stretch between China and Europe." Leszek Koczanowicz, SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Warsaw

Airline Finance (Paperback, 5th edition): Peter S. Morrell Airline Finance (Paperback, 5th edition)
Peter S. Morrell
R1,661 Discovery Miles 16 610 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Revised and updated in its fifth edition, this internationally renowned and respected book provides the essentials to understanding all areas of airline finance. Designed to address each of the distinct areas of financial management in an air transport industry context, it also shows how these fit together, while each chapter and topic - for example, aircraft leasing - provides a detailed resource that can also be consulted separately. Supported at each stage by practical airline examples and recent data, Airline Finance examines the financial trends and longer term prospects for the airline industry as a whole, contrasting the developments for the major regions and airlines together with critical discussion of key issues that affect the industry as a whole. Important techniques in financial analysis are applied to the airlines as well as their investors such as banks and other financial institutions. Thoroughly amended and updated throughout, and expanded with the addition of two new chapters, the fifth edition reflects the many developments that have affected the industry, such as the impacts of the banking and sovereign debt crises on the airline industry, signs of re-nationalisation of airlines that have emerged in Europe, and the substantial changes that have occurred in connection with rating agencies and LIBOR. New start-ups and bankruptcies are covered for the first time in a new chapter, joined by airline mergers and acquisitions (M&A), both playing a role in airline concentration. Reflecting their status as a permanent feature, fuel hedging and fuel surcharges now also have their own chapter. The medium- to long-term future in terms of further concentration and government intervention (or the lack of it) and a shift in aircraft financing towards capital markets are discussed in the final chapter. The book is written for employees of airlines, airports and their suppliers, and investment bank and other analysts. It is also popular for use by universities and in-house courses on air transport management, within both academia and industry.

Transportation Economics - Theory and Practice: A Case Study Approach (Hardcover): P. McCarthy Transportation Economics - Theory and Practice: A Case Study Approach (Hardcover)
P. McCarthy
R1,528 Discovery Miles 15 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Transportation Economics" explores the efficient use of society's scarce resources for the movement of people and goods. This book carefully examines transportation markets and standard economic tools, how these resources are used, and how the allocation of society resources affects transportation activities.

This textbook is unique in that it uses a detailed analysis of econometric results from current transportation literature to provide an integrated collection of theory and application. Its numerous case studies illustrate the economic principles, discuss testable hypotheses, analyze econometric results, and examine each study's implications for public policy. These features make this a well-developed introduction to the foundations of transportation economics.

Additional case studies on a spectrum of domestic and international transportation topics available at http: //www.blackwellpublishers.co.uk/mccarthy in order to keep students abreast of recent developments in the field and their implications for public policy.

The paperback edition of this book is not available from Blackwell in the US or Canda.

An Introduction to Airline Economics (Hardcover, 6th edition): William E. O'Connor An Introduction to Airline Economics (Hardcover, 6th edition)
William E. O'Connor
R3,202 Discovery Miles 32 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The fabric of the airline industry has continued to undergo remarkable changes since the 5th edition of this classic text was published in 1995. The industry has witnessed a series of mergers and a trend toward consolidation into fewer but larger airlines. Route patterns have been reconstructed around hub cities. In contrast to the early 1990s, which saw unprecedented operating deficits, the late 1990s have seen a swing to highly profitable operations, characterized by the forming of alliances among U.S. and foreign airlines. Revised substantially to cover these changes, this book is an excellent introduction to the economics of U.S. airline services, both domestic and international.

A college level text suitable for students without a background in economics, this book is intended for such one-semester courses as Aviation Administration, Air Transportation, and Economics of Air Transportation. Enhancing the book's value, the volume includes self-testing questions for each chapter and an appendix covering the portions of the basic transportation statute--the former Federal Aviation Act--that are pertinent to the text. Focusing exclusively on airlines--and excluding private, military, and other types of flying--this book is the only college text dealing exclusively with the economics of U.S. airlines.

Maritime Sector, Institutions, and Sea Power of Premodern China (Hardcover): K Gang Deng Maritime Sector, Institutions, and Sea Power of Premodern China (Hardcover)
K Gang Deng
R2,803 Discovery Miles 28 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Challenging the stereotype of premodern China as an agricultural nation, this book examines the development of the maritime sector, maritime institutions, and sea power in the premodern era. Initially discussing topics related to China's exports, such as ship design and construction, goods produced solely for export, capital accumulation and investment in the maritime sector, and trade networking, the volume goes on to consider the impact of maritime institutions, governmental trade and non-trade policies, and Confucian attitudes toward maritime activities.

Finally, the book shows how China obtained technological, economic, and naval supremacy in Asian waters until the 18th century and goes on to discuss the reasons for the decline of the maritime sector in the 19th century.

Shipping Company Strategies - Global Management Under Turbulent Conditions (Hardcover): Peter Lorange Shipping Company Strategies - Global Management Under Turbulent Conditions (Hardcover)
Peter Lorange
R3,827 Discovery Miles 38 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is about developing implementable strategies for shipping firms. It opens with an initial historical retrospective that highlights cases on A.P. Moller-Maersk and Leif Hoegh and Co. Here the reader is introduced to the global nature of competition in shipping, as well as the volatility of shipping markets. The book then turns to the question of how to play these markets. It looks at commodity based shipping company strategies for the bulk carrier, tanker container-ship and other segments. Here, the focus is on both going long-short, in-out, and maintaining a low cost base. Next is a discussion of operations versus asset play. The book analyzes Marsoft's forecasting methodology, with case studies on The Torvald Klaveness Group, Norden, Frontline and Teekay.

The book then takes a close look at the challenge of driving one's strategy towards niches, i.e. on-commodity segments, with a spotlight on how to find a viable business opportunity and develop a defendable strength there. Examples come from I.M. Skaugen, Farstad Shipping, The Torvald Klaveness Group and Leif Hoegh and Co.

Since overall corporate-wide portfolio strategies can be important in shipping, particularly if the various elements in the portfolio are relatively unrelated, the next part of the book turns to analytical approaches, citing several examples. Then follows a discussion of key organizational issues, particularly how to create and sustain more effective, predominantly network-based organizations. The penultimate subject is the important role the board of directors can play here. Finally, the role of family firms, and the future of shipping firms, is discussed, again with several rich examples.

Schooner Passage - Sailing Ships and the Lake Michigan Frontier (Hardcover): Theodore J. Karamanski Schooner Passage - Sailing Ships and the Lake Michigan Frontier (Hardcover)
Theodore J. Karamanski
R1,018 Discovery Miles 10 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, schooner trade was a well-developed system of maritime transport for commodities such as grain, lumber, and iron. The schooner trade was as critical to the development of the Great Lakes region as covered wagons were to the Far West and paddle wheel steamers were to the South. Schooners sailed the Great Lakes in large numbers and played a formative role in the shaping of pioneer life throughout the region. The schooners that traveled the Lake Michigan basin succeeded in bringing a range of shoreline communities and four separate states into one coherent region. Although schooners successfully competed with steam vessels for more than a half-century, wooden sailing ships could not match the scale of the giant steel bulk carriers that began to emerge from shipyards in the twentieth century. The Mary A. Gregory -- one of the last schooners left in 1926 -- was torched, sunk, and buried in Lake Michigan. Schooner Passage is a history of these magnificent sailing vessels and their role in maritime trade along Lake Michigan.

Theodore J. Karamanski shares with the reader the stories of the men and women who sailed on the schooners, their labor issues and strikes, the role of the schooner in the maritime economy along the Lake Michigan basin, and the factors that led to the eventual demise of that economy in the early twentieth century. Karamanski has put together historical accounts from newspaper dippings, historical society archives, and government documents to provide one of the few available histories of schooners.

Schooner Passage will interest scholars and students of Great Lakes and American history as well as the generalreader interested in nineteenth-century western expansion.

Modeling and Forecasting of Staffing in Civil Aviation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Anzhela Borzova, Yuri Chinyuchin, Vadim... Modeling and Forecasting of Staffing in Civil Aviation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Anzhela Borzova, Yuri Chinyuchin, Vadim Vorobyov, Dmitry Zatuchny
R3,890 Discovery Miles 38 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book highlights issues related to the organization and improvement of the efficiency of training system in technical operation of radio-electronic equipment currently used in civil aviation. The increasing intensity of air traffic around the world leads to a quantitative increase in old problems and the emergence of qualitatively new ones that can only be solved by trained people, whose training process should be carried out on a systematic basis. Modern approaches to improving the human resources potential of civil aviation, as a rule, are based only on modernizing the management mechanisms of the training system. One of the main advantages of this book is the unique integrated approach to building a system for training aviation personnel in the field of technical operation of radio-electronic equipment and air traffic control, which consists in taking into account various factors that affect the training of specialists, promising areas of development of civil aviation based on the analysis of various guidance documents and the construction of mathematical models that give a qualitative assessment of existing methods and the proposed new methodology. The book contains a large amount of visual illustrative material showing the existing structure of the system of training in the field of civil aviation.

Air Piracy, Airport Security, and International Terrorism - Winning the War Against Hijackers (Hardcover): Oliver P. St John Air Piracy, Airport Security, and International Terrorism - Winning the War Against Hijackers (Hardcover)
Oliver P. St John
R2,787 Discovery Miles 27 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As international terrorism has grown over the past decades, airlines and airports have become increasingly popular targets for violent attacks and hijackings. In this volume, Peter St. John provides a survey of international air piracy and airline terrorism, and of the ways airline professionals and governments are coping, or attempting to cope, with the crisis. St. John not only deals with the history, politics, psychology, and sociology of air piracy, but also provides an assessment of the threat to commercial aircraft and ways to counter the danger. The principal theme he develops is that security for airports and aircraft can be achieved, and the fear of terrorists overcome, if Western countries cooperate in installing effective security policies and plans. St. John begins his work with a two-chapter history of the evolution of hijacking, tracing the five-to-seven-year cycles that seem to have emerged and the growth of the politically motivated hijacking that has become the most persistent and dangerous form. He next analyzes the eight types of individuals who have hijacked aircraft in the past, their different motives, and how they can be identified by airport security and flight crews. A major chapter discusses the politics of Western governments toward highjacking in Europe and North America, and identifies the best and worst airports around the globe. A seven-stage system of security that will probably be a necessity for the 1990s is also proposed. Ensuing chapters address the problem of the hijacked plane, offering advice for passengers and crew members who are victims of hijacking, and for government behavior, which often does more to encourage air terrorism than to preventit. Finally, St. John looks to the future of airport security and describes the need for a concentrated attempt at all levels of national and international government to develop effective defenses against air piracy. A group of appendices is also included, documenting the principal hijacks of the past forty years as well as sabotage attempts on commercial aircraft. This work will be an important reference tool for professionals in security services and the airline and airport management field, and for students in political science and international relations courses. It will also be a valuable addition to college, university, and public libraries.

Expansion Rebellion - Using the Law to Fight a Runway and Save the Planet (Paperback): Celeste Hicks Expansion Rebellion - Using the Law to Fight a Runway and Save the Planet (Paperback)
Celeste Hicks
R487 Discovery Miles 4 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a story of hope in the face of widespread consternation over the global climate crisis. For many people concerned about global warming, the 2018 vote by UK parliamentarians to proceed with the plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport was a devastating blow. Aviation was predicted to make up some 25% of the UK's carbon emissions by 2050 and so the decision seemed to fly in the face of the UK's commitment to be a climate leader. Can the UK expand Heathrow airport, bringing in 700 extra planes a day, and still stay within ambitious carbon budgets? One legal case sought to answer this question. Campaigning lawyers argued that plans for a third runway at one of the world's busiest airports would jeopardise the UK's ability to meet its commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. This book traces the dramatic story of how the case was prepared - and why international aviation has for so long avoided meaningful limits on its expansion. -- .

Environment and Transport in Economic Modelling (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Roberto Roson, Kenneth A. Small Environment and Transport in Economic Modelling (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
Roberto Roson, Kenneth A. Small
R3,010 Discovery Miles 30 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The analysis of the relationship between transport and environmental policy invites an interdisciplinary treatment and a variety of approaches, and rightly so. An important subset of the approaches used involves economic analysis. Economic approaches often consider pricing policies, attempting to evaluate their effectiveness in comparison with more traditional measures such as command and control' regulation and directed technological innovation. Another important subset of approaches involves simulation modelling, where key relationships are presented mathematically so that their influence can be quantified and their interrelationships discerned precisely. This book treats the intersection of these two subsets: simulation models with a strong economic content. This intersection defines a broad but powerful way to study environment and transport. Its breadth is illustrated by the wide range of policies treated here, from carbon taxes to speed limits. Its power derives from the way insights into interrelated actions and the role of markets - the strong points of economic theory - are cast into a form suitable for making quantitative predictions about the results of policies. Case studies are used to show how simulation models can be designed and used to quantify the effectiveness of economic policies in terms of transport systems management and environmental protection, the emphasis being on the role of the markets in tracing the many effects that policies have, both anticipated and otherwise.
