Practical Applications in Business Aviation Management (Hardcover): James R. Cannon, Franklin D. Richey Practical Applications in Business Aviation Management (Hardcover)
James R. Cannon, Franklin D. Richey 1
R4,006 Discovery Miles 40 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Business aviation is one of America's most important yet least understood industries. Most organizations (about 85%) operating business aircraft are small and medium-size enterprises. They include a wide range of organizations: state governments, universities, charitable organizations, and all types of businesses. While the organizations that rely on business aviation are varied, they all have one thing in common: the need for fast, flexible, safe, and secure access to destinations worldwide. Many small U.S. businesses rely on business aviation. They are located in markets where the airlines have reduced or eliminated service, making business aviation an important connection to the rest of the world. Business aviation fosters efficiency and productivity, and is essential in an intensely competitive global marketplace. This textbook, Practical Applications in Business Aviation Management, systematically examines business aviation and provides you with a complete understanding of one of America's most dynamic industries. In this comprehensive guide to business aviation management, authors James R. Cannon and Franklin D. Richey provide in-depth and useful information on all aspects of managing a corporate aviation program. The book begins with a brief look at the history of business aviation and its important role in the aviation industry. It then moves on to focus on the practical issues facing all corporate aviation programs, such as: *Regulatory compliance *Administrative issues *Aircraft and facility maintenance *Finances and budgeting *Aircraft selection and acquisition *Standard operating procedures *International operations *Human resource management *Training *Communication and teambuilding *Safety and security *And much more The book also includes a foreword by Ed Bolen, the President and CEO of the National Business Aviation Association. It is an essential tool for students and professionals who need comprehensive, accurate, and practical information on managing a corporate aviation program.

The Mobilities Paradigm - Discourses and Ideologies (Paperback): Marcel Endres, Katharina Manderscheid, Christophe Mincke The Mobilities Paradigm - Discourses and Ideologies (Paperback)
Marcel Endres, Katharina Manderscheid, Christophe Mincke
R1,553 Discovery Miles 15 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last two decades, the conceptualisation and empirical analysis of mobilities of people, objects and symbols has become an important strand of social science. Yet, the increasing importance of mobilities in all parts of the social does not only happen as observable practices in the material world but also takes place against the background of changing discourses, scientific theories and conceptualisations and knowledge. Within the formation of these mobilities discourses, the social sciences constitute a relevant actor. Focussing on mobility as an object of knowledge from a Foucauldian perspective rather than a given entity within the historical contingency of movement, this book asks: How do discourses and ideologies structure the normative substance, social meanings, and the lived reality of mobilities? What are the real world effects of/on the will and the ability to be mobile? And, how do these lived realities, in turn, invigorate or interfere with certain discourses and ideologies of mobility?

International Maritime Transport Costs - Market Structures and Network Configurations (Paperback): Gordon Wilmsmeier International Maritime Transport Costs - Market Structures and Network Configurations (Paperback)
Gordon Wilmsmeier

Routledge Revivals: The Atlas of British Railway History (1985) (Hardcover): Michael Freeman, Derek Aldcroft Routledge Revivals: The Atlas of British Railway History (1985) (Hardcover)
Michael Freeman, Derek Aldcroft
R3,496 Discovery Miles 34 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1985, this Atlas uses over 50 specially drawn maps to trace the rise and fall of the railways' fortunes, and is supported by an interesting and authoritative text. Financial and operating statistics are clearly presented in diagrammatic form and provide a wealth of information rarely available to the student of railway history. Freeman and Aldcroft provide the basis for a new understanding of the way in which the railways transformed Britain by the scale of their engineering works, by shrinking national space and reorganising the layouts of urban areas. Maps show the evolution of early wagon routes into the first railway routes, the frenetic activity of the 'Railway Mania' years, and the consolidation of these lines into a national network. This exciting presentation of railway development will interest the enthusiast as well as the more general student of British transport history.

Airline Economics - An Empirical Analysis of Market Structure and Competition in the US Airline Industry (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Airline Economics - An Empirical Analysis of Market Structure and Competition in the US Airline Industry (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Giovanni Alberto Tabacco
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents an original empirical investigation of the market structure of airline city pair markets, shedding new light on the workings of competitive processes between firms. Examining a cross-section of US airline city pairs, Tabacco proposes for the first time that the industry can be understood as a natural oligopoly, each airline market being dominated by one to three airline carriers regardless of market size. The author questions the extent to which airlines deliberately prevent head-to-head competition within city pair markets, and draws intriguing conclusions about competitive forces from the observed market structure. Uncovering some of the main corporate strategies of the airline industry, the book is of immediate relevance to industry managers and practitioners, as well as academic economists.

Maritime Economics 3e (Paperback, 3rd Edition): Martin Stopford Maritime Economics 3e (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
Martin Stopford
R1,795 R1,656 Discovery Miles 16 560 Save R139 (8%) Ships with 15 working days

For 5000 years shipping has served the world economy and today it provides a sophisticated transport service to every part of the globe. Yet despite its economic complexity, shipping retains much of the competitive cut and thrust of the "perfect" market of classical economics. This blend of sophisticated logistics and larger than life entrepreneurs makes it a unique case study of classical economics in a modern setting.

The enlarged and substantially rewritten Maritime Economics uses historical and theoretical analysis as the framework for a practical explanation of how shipping works today. Whilst retaining the structure of the second edition, its scope is widened to include: lessons from 5000 years of commercial shipping history shipping cycles back to 1741, with a year by year commentary updated chapters on markets; shipping costs; accounts; ship finance and a new chapter on the return on capital new chapters on the geography of sea trade; trade theory and specialised cargoes updated chapters on the merchant fleet shipbuilding, recycling and the regulatory regime a much revised chapter on the challenges and pitfalls of forecasting. With over 800 pages, 200 illustrations, maps, technical drawings and tables Maritime Economics is the shipping industry's most comprehensive text and reference source, whilst remaining as one reviewer put it "a very readable book".

Martin Stopford has enjoyed a distinguished career in the shipping industry as Director of Business Development with British Shipbuilders, Global Shipping Economist with the Chase Manhattan Bank N.A., Chief Executive of Lloyds Maritime Information Services; Managing Director of Clarkson Research Services and an executive Director of Clarksons PLC. He lectures regularly at Cambridge Academy of Transport and is a Visiting Professor at Cass Business School, Dalian Maritime University and Copenhagen Business School.

On Different Tracks - Designing Railway Regulation in Britain and Germany (Hardcover): Martin Lodge On Different Tracks - Designing Railway Regulation in Britain and Germany (Hardcover)
Martin Lodge
R2,803 R2,536 Discovery Miles 25 360 Save R267 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The governments of several countries are in the process of reforming their regulatory regimes for the railways, and there is much debate about the appropriate regulation of transport in general and railways in particular--especially in light of environmental concerns about traffic congestion and air pollution and economic concerns about the financing of infrastructure and services. This volume investigates how Britain and Germany regulated their railways at three different points in time over the past century: after the First World War, after the Second World War, and in the 1990s. Its central focus is the design of regulatory regimes and the impact of institutional factors on the selection of design ideas and on processes of isomorphism. By placing a comparative analysis of regulatory design in a historical context and an institutional framework, the author contributes to the current debate on the emergence of the regulatory state in the late 20th century.

Work and Wealth in a Modern Port - An Economic Survey of Southampton (Hardcover): P. Ford Work and Wealth in a Modern Port - An Economic Survey of Southampton (Hardcover)
P. Ford
R3,656 Discovery Miles 36 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This survey, first published in 1934, was designed as a contribution to our knowledge of poverty, its incidence and causes. Poverty is a product of many variables, and it needs to be understood as an expression of a complex of economic and other social forces. This study therefore goes beyond the immediate facts, and investigates some of the factors which have influenced the growth of population, the earning strength of families and the economic life of the town and port.

As an important industry, transportation costs account for a considerable percentage of the gross national product of countries. It is therefore key to have at the disposal of those concerned with transportation activities, a bibliographical literature on costs and costing. The bibliography lists books, papers, technical reports, journal articles, and information rarely found in books and dissertations.

Drones - Safety Risk Management for the Next Evolution of Flight (Hardcover): Harrison G. Wolf Drones - Safety Risk Management for the Next Evolution of Flight (Hardcover)
Harrison G. Wolf
R4,487 Discovery Miles 44 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an everything-included approach to understanding drones, creating an organization around using unmanned aircraft, and outlining the process of safety to protect that program. It is the first-of-a-kind safety-focused text book for unmanned aircraft operations, providing the reader with a required understanding of hazard identification, risk analysis, mitigation, and promotion. It enables the reader to speak the same language as any civil aviation authority, and gives them the toolset to create a safety risk management program for unmanned aircraft. The main items in this book break down into three categories. The first approach is understanding how the drone landscape has evolved over the last 40 years. From understanding the military components of UAS to the standards and regulations evolution, the reader garners a keen understanding of where we came from and why it matters for moving forward. The second approach is in understanding how safety risk management in aviation can be applied to drones, and how that fits into the regulatory and legislative environment internationally. Lastly, a brief synopsis of the community landscape for unmanned aircraft is outlined with interviews from important leaders and stakeholders in the marketplace. Drones fills a gap in resources within the unmanned aircraft world. It provides a robust understanding of drones, while giving the tools necessary to apply for a certificate of authorization, enabling more advanced flight operations for any company, and developing safety risk management tools for students and career professionals. It will be a mainstay in all safety program courses and will be a required tool for any and all individuals looking to operate safely and successfully in the United States.

Maritime Risk and Organizational Learning (Paperback): Michael Ekow Manuel Maritime Risk and Organizational Learning (Paperback)
Michael Ekow Manuel
R1,794 Discovery Miles 17 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bridging an identified gap between research and practice in the domain of risk and organizational learning with respect to human/organizational factors and organizational behaviour, this book highlights the common and recurring threads in contributory factors to accident causation. Based on an extensive research project, it investigates how shipping companies as organizations learn from, filter and give credence/acceptability to differing risk perceptions and how this influences the work culture with special regard to group/team dynamics and individual motivation. The work is presented in the context of the literature regarding conceptual links between risk and the theoretical and operational themes of organizational learning, and in light of interviewees' comments. The themes include processes and structures of knowledge acquisition, information interpretation and distribution, organizational memory and change/adaptation and also levels of learning. The book concludes by discussing some practical implications of the research carried out in various maritime contexts and gives recommendations for the industry and other stakeholders.

Designing Safe Road Systems - A Human Factors Perspective (Paperback): Jan Theeuwes, Richard Van Der Horst Designing Safe Road Systems - A Human Factors Perspective (Paperback)
Jan Theeuwes, Richard Van Der Horst
R1,828 Discovery Miles 18 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many books focus on individual differences and how those relate to traffic safety such as accident proneness, gender differences, age, alcohol, and the effects of drugs. Others focus on the safety effects regarding the vehicle such as airbags, anti-lock brakes, navigation systems, intelligent cruise control and other new gadgets coming to the vehicle. Even though these topics are undoubtedly important for traffic safety, this book takes a unique approach as it focuses solely on the road environment. Designing Safe Road Systems provides the background for those who want to know more about the effects of road design on driving behaviour. It uses a systems approach to allow a better understanding of why and in what circumstances drivers may commit errors. This understanding will ultimately lead to road systems that prevent (fatal) errors from occurring. The book contains an overview of the current models and theories about human performance and human behaviour in traffic that are relevant for all those involved in designing safe road systems. The central theme of this book is how design principles can reduce the probability of an error while driving. The authors demonstrate how knowledge of human factors helps a road authority to better understand how road users behave. They argue that in many cases the design of the environment can be further adjusted to human capabilities, and that safety should be considered a system property to be built into the road system.

Driver Behaviour and Accident Research Methodology - Unresolved Problems (Paperback): Anders Af Wahlberg Driver Behaviour and Accident Research Methodology - Unresolved Problems (Paperback)
Anders Af Wahlberg
R1,843 Discovery Miles 18 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses several methodological problems in traffic psychology which are not currently recognized as such. Summarizing and analyzing the available research, it is found that there are a number of commonly made assumptions about the validity of methods that have little backing, and that many basic problems have not been researched at all. Suggestions are made as to further studies that should be made to address some of these problems. The book is primarily intended for traffic/transport researchers, but should also be useful for specialized education at a higher level (doctoral students and transportation specialists) as well as officials who require a good grasp of methodology to be able to evaluate research.

Transport, Demand Management and Social Inclusion - The Need for Ethnic Perspectives (Paperback): Fiona Raje Transport, Demand Management and Social Inclusion - The Need for Ethnic Perspectives (Paperback)
Fiona Raje
R1,658 Discovery Miles 16 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Social inclusion/exclusion has only recently emerged in transport-related discourse. Despite the apparent absence of a transport policy framework for social inclusion/exclusion, there has been some movement towards a greater understanding of the social aspects of transport in the research sphere. This book brings together some of this research, focusing on ethnicity - an area that has, so far, had little discussion in the traditional transport literature, thereby contributing to the exploration of the interface between transport and social exclusion. In particular, it examines the contribution that demand management measures can make to the reduction of the negative impacts of road-based transport. It questions whether methods such as road user charging and work place parking can be used as instruments for social inclusion, and analyses the potential negative impacts of these schemes if sufficient attention is not paid to ethnicity issues.

European Space Policy - European integration and the final frontier (Paperback): Thomas Hoerber, Paul Stephenson European Space Policy - European integration and the final frontier (Paperback)
Thomas Hoerber, Paul Stephenson
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Space policy is at the cutting edge of current EU policy developments and is a fascinating object of study, involving multiple and diverse actors. It is also an original and contemporary lens for studying European policy-making. This book explores advances in European space policy and their significance for European integration. Using a 'framing' methodology, it addresses central questions in European studies in order to form an interdisciplinary bridge between current research in space policy and contemporary European political studies. It assesses the interests of EU institutions in space and how these institutions perceive space policy. Furthermore, it demonstrates that space is a cross-cutting policy domain affecting a diverse range of EU policy fields, such as security, transport and migration, and underpinning the 21st century European and global economy. In doing so, this volume firmly locates space policy in the field of European Studies. This innovative volume will be of key interest to students and scholars of a range of policy areas including common foreign and security policy, technology policy, transport policy, internal market policies, environmental policy, development aid and disaster-risk management, as well as the EU institutions.

Deep Stall - The Turbulent Story of Boeing Commercial Airplanes (Paperback): Philip K. Lawrence, David W. Thornton Deep Stall - The Turbulent Story of Boeing Commercial Airplanes (Paperback)
Philip K. Lawrence, David W. Thornton
R1,666 Discovery Miles 16 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Deep Stall applies a framework of strategic analysis to the Boeing Company. Boeing is the world's largest aerospace / defence company, with turnover in the region of US $60bn. The book examines the relative decline of Boeing in the civil aircraft market in relation to European manufacturer, Airbus. The aim of the book is to utilize the concept of strategic value to explain Boeing's decline. The authors define this concept as investment in people and technology to leverage future market success by developing innovative new products, arguing that Boeing has neglected strategic value in favour of shareholder value, defined in terms of short-term cash benefits. The rationale for the book exists both in the fact that the story in itself is interesting and also in the wider framework of analysis concerning the correct strategic approach for running a high technology business. The argument illustrates what can happen when quarterly returns become the predominant strategic rationale for a company. In the U.S. the business media (Economist, Forbes, Fortune, and Business Week etc) are now focusing on the question of Boeing's decline and the major implications for the U.S. national interest. Boeing is one of the jewels in the US technology crown, but today U.S. jobs and capability are being exported abroad, with most of its aircraft program work based in Asia. This is a hot topic in the US which explains why the business media are now so interested in this question. The book sits squarely in the centre of this debate. Deep Stall concludes with a brief analysis of the recent fight-back that has been evident in Boeing's fortunes and the successful campaign to sell the new 787. The authors probe the question of whether Airbus or Boeing is likely to dominate in the next ten or fifteen years.

Space and Transport in the World-System (Hardcover, New): Stephen G. Bunker, Paul S Ciccantell Space and Transport in the World-System (Hardcover, New)
Stephen G. Bunker, Paul S Ciccantell
R2,806 R2,540 Discovery Miles 25 400 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Key metaphors in world-system analysis are profoundly spatial, but there have been few attempts to understand how space, location, and topography affect world-system organization and process. To fill this gap, this book examines case studies of the restructuring of space and transport in core, semiperipheral, and peripheral economies. It addresses such topics as the role of ocean transport in linking terrestrially based units of the capitalist world economy, the role of land transport systems in the construction and restructuring of relationships between raw materials peripheries and core economies, and the role of the airplane in transforming and representing changing spatial, economic, and social relations in the capitalist world economy. World-systems theory and many other perspectives on the world economy, including international political economy and analysis of globalization, typically pay only limited attention to issues of space, location, and the role of transportation in the world economy. This book identifies key theoretical and empirical issues and provides the basis for formulating research strategies to address this gap in our understanding.
