The Anxiety Project (Hardcover): Daan Heerma Van Voss The Anxiety Project (Hardcover)
Daan Heerma Van Voss; Translated by David Doherty
R628 R557 Discovery Miles 5 570 Save R71 (11%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

"The most interesting Dutch writer of his generation" Herman Koch "Vivid and moving. A marvellous hybrid of a book about one one of the major contemporary causes of sickness and unhappiness. In it we recognise ourselves, our restlessness and insecurity" George Szirtes Something inside will not let me be . . . Daan Heerma van Voss is not just anxious. According to tests on the cortisone levels in his hair, he is seventy-four times as anxious as the average person. And that makes him hard to live with. When another relationship is broken by his crippling fears, the only way to cope is to get to the roots of his condition. But he also wants to dig deeper and tackle the big questions. Why are 264 million people worldwide suffering from anxiety, and why is this number growing every day? Is it hereditary? Is there a link with creativity? And how can you love when you're living in a constant state of fear? In his quest for answers, he takes us on a profoundly moving journey from his apartment in Amsterdam to France, Jakarta and San Francisco. Along the way we'll meet philosophers, artists, writers and other fascinating individuals from around the world. But this is also a journey through literature, the classics, the history of anxiety and the science behind it. Timely, learned and heartfelt, The Anxiety Project fuses the sharp musings of a curious mind with a raw and honest dissection of a relationship undercut by fear. It will appeal to anyone trying to remain calm on our very nervous planet. Translated from the Dutch by David Doherty

The Turkish Embassy Letters - 1716-1718 (Paperback): Mary Wortley Montagu The Turkish Embassy Letters - 1716-1718 (Paperback)
Mary Wortley Montagu
R340 Discovery Miles 3 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mary Montagu was one of the most extraordinary characters in the world. She was a self-educated intellectual, a free spirit, a radical, a feminist but also an entitled aristocrat and a society wit with powerful friends at court. In 1716 she travelled across Europe to take up residence in Istanbul as the wife of the British ambassador. Her letters remain as fresh as the day they were penned: enchanted by her discoveries of the life of Turkish women behind the veil, by Arabic poetry and by contemporary medical practices - including inoculation. For two years she lovingly observed Ottoman society as a participant, with affection, intelligence and an astonishing lack of prejudice.

Turning the Wheel (Paperback): Kevan Manwaring Turning the Wheel (Paperback)
Kevan Manwaring
R560 Discovery Miles 5 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'The frisky Oss appeared - the dancers and drummers in a kind of shamanic trance (induced by a day of drumming, dancing and beer). They were wilder than ever; the atmosphere was positively Bacchanalian and I felt we had all become lost in a kind of collective folk consciousness.' On two wheels across Britain 'Bard on a Bike' Kevan Manwaring searches out the places and people who mark the seasons and cycles in their own special way - in ceremonies and festivals both private and public, large and intimate, ancient and modern. Along the way, he experiences and relates moments of sacred time found in the unlikeliest of places and circumstances, showing how it is a state of mind that can be experienced not only at sacred sites, but in the everyday. A collection of reflections about being fully alive in the Twenty First century, as much a useful guide for the curious, Turning the Wheel is a wise and witty account of a leather-clad time-traveller.

A travelogue detailing two separate missions for musician and writer Rupert Mould, this explores some of the biggest names in Cuban music while seeking out an increased personal understanding of two of Cuba's most influential revolutionaries, Ernesto Che Guevara and Jose Marti. In the course of this book much of the essential character of Cuba, her people, her music, and history are sensitively portrayed.

Robert Lawrence France
R720 R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Save R40 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The main Camino route is the Camino Frances. This part of the Camino de Santiago traditionally starts in St Jean Pied de Port and finishes in Santiago de Compostela about 780km later, after travelling the breadth of Northern Spain, However, travellers can start anywhere and even continue past Santiago to the sea at Finisterre. Finisterre was thought to be the end of the world in medieval times. Robert France walked the Camino Frances (all the way to Finisterre) in Winter and this book is the result of that adventure. It differs from much of the current literature available in that is written by someone in middle-age (most accounts are from the retired or the gap-year student). It is a reflective and thoughtful account which includes literary references, visual records and information on architecture, monuments and pilgrimages. As an example of how much of a 'cult' this walk has become, there is a community called the Confraternity of St. James, based in London, whose membership has grown from a half dozen to over two thousand during the last thirty years. This will have a wide appeal to all travel enthusiasts the world over as well as modern pilgrims, of whom there are more than one thinks!

'The idea of owning anything except the experience is hubris.' Unknown Pleasures is a collection of works by the climber and award-winning author Andy Kirkpatrick. Obsessed with climbing and addicted to writing, Kirkpatrick is a master storyteller. Covering subjects as diverse as climbing, relationships, fatherhood, mental health and the media, it is easy to read, sometimes difficult to digest, and impossible to forget. One moment he is attempting a rare solo ascent of Norway's Troll Wall, the next he is surrounded by the TV circus while climbing Moonlight Buttress with the BBC's The One Show presenter Alex Jones. Yosemite's El Capitan is ever-present; he climbs it alone - strung out for weeks, and he climbs it with his thirteen-year-old daughter Ella - her first big wall. His eye for observation and skilled wordcraft make for laugh-out-loud funny moments, while in more hard-hitting pieces he is unflinchingly honest about past and present love and relationships, and pulls no punches with an alternative perspective of our place in the world. Unknown Pleasures is Andy Kirkpatrick at his brilliant best.

Meryl Urson
R220 R208 Discovery Miles 2 080 Save R12 (5%) Out of stock

When Meryl Urson stepped off a plane for the first time into a steamy Mumbai midnight, little did she know that she’d begun a lengthy love affair with India? It would stretch across innumerable encounters and far into her future. This book is a record of her relationship with the world’s most fascinating country.

The reader is swept from the craziness of a revered guru’s southern headquarters to the turbulent peaks of the northern Himalayas, and through adventures as diverse as the discovery of a secret queen’s bath-house glittering behind a long-locked door, and the toppling of a Karl Marx statue in the middle of a Keralan Communist rally.

Way Out In India is an idiosyncratic view of the diversity of life on the subcontinent through the enchanted eyes of an author in love with both place and people.

First published more than thirty years ago, Paul Theroux's strange, unique, and hugely entertaining railway odyssey has become a modern classic of travel literature. Here Theroux recounts his early adventures on an unusual grand continental tour. Asia's fabled trains -- the Orient Express, the Khyber Pass Local, the Frontier Mail, the Golden Arrow to Kuala Lumpur, the Mandalay Express, the Trans-Siberian Express -- are the stars of a journey that takes him on a loop eastbound from London's Victoria Station to Tokyo Central, then back from Japan on the Trans-Siberian. Brimming with Theroux's signature humor and wry observations, this engrossing chronicle is essential reading for both the ardent adventurer and the armchair traveler.

Approaching the Cosmos...Hotel - Traveling the World with a Gay Sensibility (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Robert Champ Approaching the Cosmos...Hotel - Traveling the World with a Gay Sensibility (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Robert Champ
R859 Discovery Miles 8 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Approaching the Cosmos Hotel is a compendium of travels, an odyssey through much of the world over many years, a memoir that explores events, cultures, gastronomy, architecture and art through the critical lens of a man who doesn't take himself too seriously. Robert Champ's experiences humorously expose the fools, hypocrites and outre characters he encounters: out-of-their-element expats in Mexico and Spain, tourists in Russia or China who might better have stayed home, rigid officialdom everywhere. Fascinating landscapes and personalities limn these pages, and the armchair adventurer seeking an unconventional narrative will have no trouble finding it here. New Author Bio: Robert Champ has traveled widely in the Americas and Europe, navigated the upper Amazon and the Yangtze, survived narrow, precipitous roads in the Caucasus. Add to this a humorless dominatrix of an Intourist guide, plus true-believing, leering comrades at intimidating customs checkpoints (was I bringing in a Bible? a Playboy?), and we recognize we're in the dark old Soviet Union. The author was born in the Midwest on the eve of WWII. After some Pacific excursions courtesy of the US Navy, he eventually settled in California. He lives in San Francisco.

Karel Schoeman
R323 Discovery Miles 3 230 Ships in 4 - 8 working days

Since the days of conquistador Hernan Cortes, rumours have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden deep in the Honduran interior. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and warn the legendary city is cursed: to enter it is a death sentence. They call it the Lost City of the Monkey God. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artefacts and an electrifying story of having found the City - but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Three quarters of a century later, bestselling author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a single-engine plane carrying a highly advanced, classified technology that could map the terrain under the densest rainforest canopy. In an unexplored valley ringed by steep mountains, that flight revealed the unmistakable image of a sprawling metropolis, tantalizing evidence of not just an undiscovered city but a lost civilization. To confirm the discovery, Preston and the team battled torrential rains, quickmud, plagues of insects, jaguars, and deadly snakes. They emerged from the jungle with proof of the legend... and the curse. They had contracted a horrifying, incurable and sometimes lethal disease. Suspenseful and shocking, filled with history, adventure and dramatic twists of fortune, The Lost City of the Monkey God is the absolutely true, eyewitness account of one of the great discoveries of the twenty-first century.

The story of extraordinary women who lost their way - their sense of self, their identity, their freedom - and found it again through walking in the wild. 'Moving and memorable' Virginia Nicholson, author of How Was It for You? 'A triumph ... I felt as though I were being lifted, carried up to peaks' Charlotte Peacock, author of Into the Mountain: A Life of Nan Shepherd 'A beautiful and meditative memoir' Publishers Weekly For centuries, the wilds have been male territory, while women sat safely confined at home. But not all women did as they were told, despite the dangers; history reveals women for whom rural walking became inspiration, consolation and liberation. In this powerful and deeply inspiring book, Annabel Abbs uncovers women who refused to conform, who recognised a biological, emotional and artistic need for wilderness, water and desert - and who took the courageous step of walking unpeopled and often forbidding landscapes. Part wild-walk, part memoir, Windswept follows an exhilarating journey from Abbs's isolated, car-less childhood to her walking the remote paths trodden by extraordinary women, including Georgia O'Keeffe in the empty plains of Texas and New Mexico, Nan Shepherd in the mountains of Scotland, Gwen John following the Garonne, Simone de Beauvoir in the mountains and forests of France and Daphne du Maurier along the River Rhone. A single question pulses through their walks: How does a woman change once she becomes windswept?

Like most travelers in Burma, Norman Lewis fell in love with the land and its people. Although much of the countryside was under the control of insurgent armies--the book was originally published in 1952--he managed, by steamboat, decrepit lorry, and dacoit-besieged train, to travel almost everywhere he wanted. This perseverance enabled him to see brilliant spectacles that are still out of our reach, and to meet all types of Burmese, from District officers to the inmates of Rangoon's jail. All the color, gaiety, and charm of the East spring to life with this master storyteller.

So through the dense clouds of historical tragedy, Wright exchavates hope that a revival of pride and dignity in Andean culture is possible.

A Turn in the South is a reflective journey by V. S. Naipaul in the late 1980s through the American South. Naipaul writes of his encounters with politicians, rednecks, farmers, writers and ordinary men and women, both black and white, with the insight and originality we expect from one of our best travel writers. Fascinating and poetic, this is a remarkable book on race, culture and country. 'Naipaul's writing is supple and fluid, meticulously crafted, adventurous and quick to surprise. And, as usual, there's the freshness and originality of his way of looking at things' Sunday Times 'Naipaul writes as if a modern oracle has chosen to speak through him. It is a tissue of brilliantly recorded hearsay, of intense listening by a man with a remarkable ear' New York Times Review of Books 'This is a journey below the Mason-Dixon line into a society riven by too many defeats; the broken cause of the old Confederacy, and the frustrated anger of Southern blacks whose power is circumscribed . . . Cv Publications series of Guides to English counties is launched with my survey of Oxfordshire. It has been a journey of discovery. Rather than just passing from point A to B my excursions followed an ad-hoc schedule of diverse routes. I found myself turning down obscure side lanes leading to little villages hidden in a marvellous landscape of deep countryside. Documenting over one hundred centres the county gradually revealed itself as largely unspoilt by the industrial sprawl. Oxford itself is of course very lively and cosmopolitan, but communications and facilities are as good in the many market towns. I was really interested to note the range of properties both old and new and the particular character of an area. I hope that my guide provides details and insights that will assist your own enquiries for a new location' - Sarah James.

During his years as a schoolboy, a student and then a young dentist in the 1960s, John Furniss and his friends took every opportunity to escape from their work and studies and go climbing together, first in England, Wales and Scotland and later tackling the more challenging peaks of the Austrian and German Alps. Adding the vertical metres together, during that fondly remembered decade they scaled more than 13 times the height of Mount Everest. They were years of adventure and daring, featuring occasional narrow squeaks and some amusing brushes with the local language and culture. Most of all they were years of comradeship, which John still remembers with great fondness more than forty years on.
