The research presented in this book explores the formation of the middle class in contemporary urban China. Including case studies on middle-class professionals living in Beijing, this book analyses how social and economic changes to Chinese society create a middle-class lifestyle and new forms of distinction with a particular focus on the social construction of identity. Looking through the lens of individuals' perception of life trajectories and ideological taxonomies generated within the framework of post-Maoist China, the book uncovers the role that the Chinese middle-class play in a state-sponsored discourse and where the distinctions identifying the middle-class lifestyle produce inequality, transfer privilege, and disadvantage in contemporary urban China. It goes on to question hegemonic discourses on class, arguing that a middle-class identity is progressively constructed in urban China not only though consumption practices, but through the experience of non-individualistic activities in both the public and private spheres. Analyzing how social distinctions are performed contributes to the understanding of the Chinese middle-class pre-pandemic, as well as the continual challenges this social group shall face in the years to come. As a result, the spatial separation of the raees has been viewed as a serious threat to the stability of the society (U. S. National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, 1968: vii). Spatial separation also leads to other specific problems sueh as de laclo sehool segregation, while segregated sehools have been declared inherently unequal. Furthermore, the movement of blaeks to the suburbs that has oecurred in 2 recent years has not led to decreased patterns of isolation. Instead, this shift has refleeted an expansion of existing ghetto areas aeross city bounda- ries. For example, Cleveland's black ghetto has expanded into and through East Cleveland which is a distinct municipality; (see Arthur D. Little, 1969) and Washington, D. C. 's ghetto has expanded northeast into suburban Prinee Georges County (Zehner and Chapin, 1974). 3 Glantz and Delaney (1973) in a study of 14 ofthe 18largest metropolitan are as, found that the degree of segregation of blacks within particular suburban municipalities had not changed much between 1969 and 1970. Blacks were coneentrated in the same suburban eommunities in 1970 as in 1960.

Originally published in 1988, this book documents and explains the emergence of flat 'break-ups' - the sale of individual owner occupation of blocks of flats which were previously privately rented and which played a major role in the transformation of the private housing market in London since the 1960s. The book shows that the flat break-up market in London was not a unique phenomenon but one of the most geographically concentrated manifestations of the trend for sales from private renting to owner occupation which has been established in the UK since the 1920s. The interrelationship between the causes of the decline of the privately rented sector in Britain and the features specific to the flat market comprises the second theme of the book.

New York in Cinematic Imagination is an interdisciplinary study into urbanism and cinematic representations of the American metropolis in the twentieth century. This book examines the increasing marginalization of and response by people living in urban areas throughout the Western Hemisphere, and both the local and global implications of continued colonial racial hierarchies and the often-dire consequences they have for people perceived as different. However, in the aftermath of recent U.S. elections, whiteness also seems to embody strictures on religion, ethnicity, country of origin, and almost any other personal characteristic deemed suspect at the moment. For that reason, gender, race, and even class, collectively, may not be sufficient units of analysis to study the marginalizing mechanisms of the urban center. The authors interrogate the social and institutional structures that facilitate the disenfranchisement or downward trajectory of groups, and their potential or subsequent lack of access to mainstream rewards. The book also seeks to highlight examples where marginalized groups have found ways to assert their equality. No recent texts have attempted to connect the mechanisms of marginality across geographical and political boundaries within the Western Hemisphere.

Recent years have seen a gathering interest in the importance of real estate development to the growth and development of cities. This has included theoretical work on such topics as land rent and property rights as well as empirical studies on property investments, assetization, securitization, and the effects of changing property values on economic growth and the global status of cities. In the field of urban political economy, attention has turned particularly to the financialization of land and the built environment and to the globalization of property ownership, real estate development, and architectural design. By focusing on quantitative and qualitative research in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, this book expands on the notion of "therapeutic culture." Usually considered a global phenomenon disseminated from North to South, and associated to "modern" forms of "psychologized" subjectivity, "therapeutic culture" has become a key notion to understanding contemporary culture. However, this path-breaking research, grounded in a bottom-up perspective that follows specific therapeutic narratives, shows that the concept of the "therapeutic" should be extended to encompass a diversity of practices, both "secular" and "religious," "modern" and "traditional," that are deemed as therapeutic by the actors involved, although they are overlooked as such by most of the current literature. Pentecostal and Afro-Brazilian religions as well as New Age practices coexist and interact with "conventional" therapeutic techniques such as Psychoanalysis, conforming complex and hybrid therapeutic networks associated to different (also hybrid) forms of subjectivity. Although the book draws upon two cases from the "Global South," its theoretical conclusions are applicable to the analysis of the realm of the therapeutic at large. The book is aimed at university students (both graduate and undergraduate) and at the general public interested in the notion of the therapeutic and, specifically, in Latin American culture.

This book presents the findings of a ten-year longitudinal study on the experience of Chinese immigrants from Wenzhou in Paris. The author examines the impact of the evolving spaces people from Wenzhou have built for themselves in the French capital, both within immigrant communities and French society at large. The study discovers that over the course of a decade, immigrants from Wenzhou in Paris have experienced notable changes in the industries they work in, where they live, their organizational structure, how they interact with one another, and their inter-generational dynamics. While using social justice and the city as our starting point may signal inspiration from Harvey's (1973) book of the same name, the task of examining the emergence of this concept has revealed the deep influence of grassroots urban uprisings of the late 1960s, earlier and contemporary meditations on our urban worlds (Jacobs, 1961, 1969; Lefebvre, 1974; Massey and Catalano, 1978) as well as its enduring significance built upon by many others for years to come.
