This book discusses geometric and mathematical models that can be
used to study fluid and structural mechanics in the cardiovascular
system. Where traditional research methodologies in the human
cardiovascular system are challenging due to its invasive nature,
several recent advances in medical imaging and computational fluid
and solid mechanics modelling now provide new and exciting research
opportunities. This emerging field of study is multi-disciplinary,
involving numerical methods, computational science, fluid and
structural mechanics, and biomedical engineering. Certainly any new
student or researcher in this field may feel overwhelmed by the
wide range of disciplines that need to be understood. This unique
book is one of the first to bring together knowledge from multiple
disciplines, providing a starting point to each of the individual
disciplines involved, attempting to ease the steep learning curve.
This book presents elementary knowledge on the physiology of the
cardiovascular system; basic knowledge and techniques on
reconstructing geometric models from medical imaging; mathematics
that describe fluid and structural mechanics, and corresponding
numerical/computational methods to solve its equations and
problems. Many practical examples and case studies are presented to
reinforce best practice guidelines for setting high quality
computational models and simulations. These examples contain a
large number of images for visualization, to explain cardiovascular
physiological functions and disease. The reader is then exposed to
some of the latest research activities through a summary of
breakthrough research models, findings, and techniques. The book's
approach is aimed at students and researchers entering this field
from engineering, applied mathematics, biotechnology or medicine,
wishing to engage in this emerging and exciting field of
computational hemodynamics modelling.
Chronic venous disorders are a major health problem due to their
wide prevalence and socio-economic considerations. This book is a
comprehensive manual providing state- of- the- art information on
the diagnosis and management of these common problems. Till
recently venous disorders have been getting secondary attention as
compared to their arterial counterpart. However, the last two
decades witnessed major technological advancements and therapeutic
strategies for these problems. Written with a surgical perspective,
this monograph covers the latest developments and recommended
procedures in an easy-to-read format guiding the surgeon to prepare
a rational treatment plan. Supplemented with numerous figures and
illustrations, the chapters update the readers with how to evaluate
such patients in their practices, selection criteria for
appropriate procedures and how to manage the complications. The
book includes basics of venous disorders, primary varicose veins
and recurrence after surgery, chronic venous insufficiency, venous
ulcers and congenital venous malformations. Detailed coverage of
endo-venous procedures such as radio-frequency ablation, laser
ablation and foam sclerotherapy are additional essential features
of this book. Primarily intended for the practicing general
surgeon, this volume is also relevant for residents in general
surgery and vascular surgery.
This book provides the medical student, the surgeon in training,
and the cardiologist with the theoretical foundations and some
practical aspects of open heart surgery. An attempt has been made
to present the material in a clear way by simplifying various
concepts and theories and by employing many schematic
illustrations. To present the subject matter in perspective, some
chapters include historical notes. Although the book has been
primarily designed to provide the theoretical background necessary
for the optimal practice of open heart surgery, it also contains
basic information on most surgical procedures for ischemic heart
disease, acquired valvular disease, congenital heart disease, and
various aspects of pre- and post-operative management.
Endovascular neurosurgery is a recently introduced but rapidly
evolving medical field, which uses minimally invasive interventions
to treat major life-threatening vascular lesions of the Central
Nervous System. Although its history counts less than 15 years of
worldwide acceptance, it has rapidly displaced the traditional open
neurosurgical techniques, being nowadays the first treatment choice
for brain aneurysms and vascular malformations. Thus, the
experience of each neuroendovascular center and performer is
invaluable, offering the base for learning and teaching the new
generation of interventionalists as well as for the evolvement of
the method itself. This book presents the basic principles of
endovascular neurosurgery starting from clinical cases. Through
this close-to-clinical-reality-process, the reader will be able to
more thoroughly understand the pathophysiology of the brain and
spine vascular lesions as well as the decision-making strategy,
related to the indications, endovascular methods and results,
finding suggestions and solutions to his/her clinical questions and
problems. Besides chapters devoted to CNS vascular embryology and
anatomy, clinical cases organized in groups based on the treated
lesions are introduced: ruptured and unruptured cerebral aneurysms
of the anterior and posterior circulation, side-wall and
bifurcation aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), dural
arteriovenous fistulae (dAVF), arterial stenosis and angioplasty as
well as spinal vascular lesions. A separate chapter is devoted to
the organization and necessary equipment of the angio room and the
department offering neuroendovascular service. This volume will be
of interest to neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists,
vascular surgeons, neurologists and ICU physicians as well as
health care providers who are involved in the diagnosis and
management of the vascular lesions of the brain and spine.
This text evolved as a response to numerous requests to present a
simplified approach to the diagnosis and management of most of the
common aspects of both cosmetic and medical venous disorders. The
authors, representing experienced plebologists from several
different primary disciplines, have attempted to present simplistic
paradigm-oriented approaches on how to thoughtfully evaluate and
manage common vein issues with contemporary solutions. Several
areas of phlebology were not addressed in this text. The management
of vascular malformations are beyond the scope of this text and
were not covered in detail. Although indications for the
appropriate use of IVC filters are discussed, the details about the
specific devices, their placement and removal are also beyond the
scope of this text. Deep venous obstruction from prior thrombosis,
venous compression by arteries such as the compression of the left
common iliac vein by the right common iliac artery and pelvic
venous insufficiency can now be managed with minimally invasive
image guided treatments; the technical aspects of such treatments
are complex and not discussed in detail in this handbook. This book
will increase the therapeutic skill of the practicing phlebologist
and thus increase the quality of care for patients faced with
problems related to venous disorders.
New Techniques for Thoracic Outlet Syndromes presents in a
comprehensive format an up-to-date, state of the art reference that
physicians can use in consultation to properly treat patients using
the resources that modern medicine offers. This book offers the
newer surgical approaches that have been developed during the past
30 years. Some of these techniques are modification of operations
that were proposed previously but were not fully affective and left
many patients suffering with permanent disability. This textbook is
a compendium of the proper management of these patients that cannot
be found in isolated reports of literature. The neurogenic-arterial
thoracic outlet syndrome section covers how to diagnosis the
illness using the proper tests, therefore eliminating the use of
expensive, uncomfortable and inconvenient tests. The text is
organized in three basic sections that cover all the aspects of the
thoracic outlet syndromes. The first section addresses the
neurogenic-arterial type, with the pertinent subsections: symptoms,
diagnosis. A list of the useful tests is provided to make a correct
diagnosis of this syndrome. This is followed by the sections on
treatment, using the surgical approaches with historical aspects
and evolution of the operations proposed. The second section
involves the venous thoracic outlet syndrome divided into the
corresponding subsections comprising: symptoms and physical
findings, etiology, diagnosis. This section also includes a list of
the usual tests to make the proper diagnosis. The last section of
this text is dedicated to the presence of cervical ribs and their
classification of the different types that occur, and also the
proper surgical treatment when fusion of the upper ribs is present.
New Techniques for Thoracic Outlet Syndromes offers the current,
acceptable and most effective methods to handle thoracic outlet
syndromes. It will be of great value to thoracic surgeons, vascular
surgeons, interventional radiologists as well as fellows and
residents in training for cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.

Practical advice from renowned experts
Vascular surgery has experienced remarkable growth and
diversification in the last decade, especially with its embracing
the disruptive endovascular technological revolution. Vascular
surgeons remain the only group of specialists capable of total
treatment of patients with vascular disease, providing medical,
minimally invasive, and surgical therapy. Although vascular
surgeons practice in all areas of the world, practice patterns in
different areas naturally have both similarities and differences
that reflect both regional patterns of disease, genetic
characteristics of local peoples, cultural preferences for
treatment, local political and economic situations, different
access to resources and devices, as well as different training
paradigms. Thus, the practice of vascular surgery has diversified
and evolved in parallel in many areas, converging and diverging in
many ways. Vascular Surgery: A Global Perspective provides the
first review and comparison of the diversity of vascular surgery
practice around the world. The book is grouped according to common
vascular diseases such as aneurysmal and occlusive arterial
disease, as well as venous and lymphatic disease and dialysis
access. Each major disease topic includes multiple chapters written
by expert specialists from around the world, each discussing their
local approach to the disease and its treatment. Similarly, the
status of vascular surgery practice is addressed, including
discussion of the influence of payment systems on practice, patient
access to the internet for information, training paradigms, and the
legal system including malpractice. This textbook provides the
first worldwide summary of the care of patients with vascular
disease and will be of interest to a wide audience including
vascular surgeons, vascular medical specialists, cardiologists,
radiologists, internists, and family practice physicians.
