Beyond A Love Supreme - John Coltrane and the Legacy of an Album (Paperback): Tony Whyton Beyond A Love Supreme - John Coltrane and the Legacy of an Album (Paperback)
Tony Whyton
R778 Discovery Miles 7 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recorded by his quartet in a single session in 1964, A Love Supreme is widely considered John Coltrane's magnum opus and one of the greatest jazz albums of all time.
In Beyond A Love Supreme, Tony Whyton explores both the musical complexities of A Love Supreme and the album's seminal importance in jazz history. Marking Coltrane's transition from the bebop and hard bop of his earlier recordings to the free jazz style perfected throughout the rest of his career, the album also embodies the deep spirituality that characterized the final years of his life. The titles of the four part suite--"Acknowledgment," "Resolution," "Pursuance," and "Psalm"--along with the poem Coltrane composed for inclusion in the liner notes, which he "recites" instrumentally in "Psalm," reflect the religious aspect of the album, a quality that contributes to its mystique and symbolic importance within the canon of major jazz recordings. But Whyton also shows how A Love Supreme challenges many of the traditional, unreflective assumptions that permeate jazz culture--the binary oppositions between improvisation and composition, black music and white music, live performance and studio recording. He critically examines many of the mythologizing narratives about how the album was conceived and recorded and about what it signifies in terms of the trajectory of Coltrane's personal life. Sifting through the criticism of late Coltrane, Whyton suggests ways of listening to these recordings that go beyond the conventional ideologies of mainstream jazz practice and open the music to a wider range of responses.
Filled with fresh insights into one of the most influential recordings in jazz history, Beyond A Love Supreme is an indispensable resource for jazz scholars, jazz musicians, and fans and aficionados at all levels.

The Social Media Handbook (Hardcover): Jeremy Hunsinger, Theresa Senft The Social Media Handbook (Hardcover)
Jeremy Hunsinger, Theresa Senft
R5,058 Discovery Miles 50 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Social Media Handbook explores how social media are changing disciplinary understandings of the internet and our everyday lives. In addition to person-to-person social networking services like Facebook and Twitter, this volume considers a broad range of networked information services that support in-depth social interaction, community formation, and collaboration in the Web 2.0 era.

Rather than considering social media in terms of specific technologies, the chapters in this book engage topics across a range of research, techniques, practices, culture and society, and theories. These broader topics including community, gender, fandom, disability, and journalism are entryways through which students and faculty can explore ways of thinking about social media and find new paradigms for analysis.

Journeys of a Sufi Musician (Paperback): Kudsi Erguner Journeys of a Sufi Musician (Paperback)
Kudsi Erguner; Translated by Annette Courtenay Mayers
R427 R353 Discovery Miles 3 530 Save R74 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1968, Turkish whirling dervishes accepted an invitation by UNESCO to perform in Paris for the first time, to the delight and fascination of French audiences. Kudsi Erguner, a Sufi musician specialising in the ney (reed flute), was amongst them, and accompanied the dervishes throughout their subsequent tours of Europe and the United States. Istanbul's Sufi community. In the tekke, the traditional meeting-places for dervishes, he grew close to the last great representatives of this community and was inspired by their words and music. He experienced their astonishment at the growing interest of Westerners in a culture the elders believed was doomed to extinction under the repressive laws of the Turkish authorities. In the West, Erguner would go on to meet other adepts of Eastern spirituality, including disciples of G. I. Gurdjieff and adherents of traditional music. He thus became aware of the fascination that the East exerted on Westerners, as well as the misunderstandings arising from this attraction. community, but also to relate the encounter of traditional Sufi culture with the Western world. He raises issues relating to the transmission of a teaching both musical and spiritual and the role of a 'traditional' musician.

Monarch of the Flute - The Life of Georges Barr`ere (Paperback): Nancy Toff Monarch of the Flute - The Life of Georges Barr`ere (Paperback)
Nancy Toff
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Georges Barr`ere (1876-1944) holds a preeminent place in the history of American flute playing. Best known for two of the landmark works that were written for him-the Poem of Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Density 21.5 by Edgard Var`ese-he was the most prominent early exemplar of the Paris Conservatoire tradition in the United States and set a new standard for American woodwind performance. Barr`ere's story is a musical tale of two cities, and this book uses his life as a window onto musical life in Belle Epoque Paris and twentieth-century New York. Recurrent themes are the interactions of composers and performers; the promotion of new music; the management, personnel, and repertoire of symphony orchestras; the economic and social status of the orchestral and solo musician, including the increasing power of musicians' unions; the role of patronage, particularly women patrons; and the growth of chamber music as a professional performance medium. A student of Paul Taffanel at the Paris Conservatoire, by age eighteen Barr`ere played in the premiere of Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. He went on to become solo flutist of the Concerts Colonne and to found the Societe Moderne d'Instruments a Vent, a pioneering woodwind ensemble that premiered sixty-one works by forty composers in its first ten years. Invited by Walter Damrosch to become principal flute of the New York Symphony in 1905, he founded the woodwind department at the Institute of Musical Art (later Juilliard). His many ensembles toured the United States, building new audiences for chamber music and promoting French repertoire as well as new American music. Toff narrates Barr`ere's relationships with the finest musicians and artists of his day, among them Isadora Duncan, Yvette Guilbert, Andr'e Caplet, Paul Hindemith, Albert Roussel, Wallingford Riegger, and Henry Brant. The appendices of the book, which list Barr`ere's 170 premieres and the 50 works dedicated to him, are a resource for a new generation of performers. Based on extensive archival research and oral histories in both France and the United States, this is the first biography of Barr`ere.

John Coltrane and Black America's Quest for Freedom - Spirituality and the Music (Paperback, New): Leonard Brown John Coltrane and Black America's Quest for Freedom - Spirituality and the Music (Paperback, New)
Leonard Brown
R1,346 Discovery Miles 13 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

John Coltrane's unique and powerful saxophonic sound is commonly recognized among jazz scholars and fans alike as having a "spiritual" nature, imbued with the perfomer's soul, which deeply touches musicians and listeners worldwide. This revered and respected musician created new standards, linked tradition with innovation, challenged common assumptions, and relentlessly pursued spiritual goals in his music, which he aimed openly to use as a means to help listeners see the beauty of life. More than four decades after Coltrane's death, it is this spiritual nature of the music that has kept his sound alive - and thriving - on the contemporary jazz scene. Edited by prominent jazz musician and scholar Leonard Brown, John Coltrane and Black America's Quest for Freedom is a timely exploration of Coltrane's sound and its spiritual qualities as they relate to Black American music culture and aspirations for freedom. A wide-ranging collection of essays and interviews featuring many of the most eminent figures in jazz studies and performance-Tommy Lee Lott, Anthony Brown, Herman Gray, Emmett G. Price III, Dwight Andrews, Tammy Kernodle, Salim Washington, Eric Jackson, and TJ Anderson (foreword)- the book examines the full spectrum of Coltrane's legacy. Each essay approaches this theme from a different angle, in both historical and contemporary contexts, focusing on how Coltrane became a quintessential example of the universal and enduring qualities of Black American culture. The contributors address Coltrane as the Black intellectual, the visionary master of musical syntax, the man and the media icon, and ultimately the symbol of the spiritual core of Black American music.

The Clarinet in the Classical Period (Paperback): Albert Rice The Clarinet in the Classical Period (Paperback)
Albert Rice
R1,615 Discovery Miles 16 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Acclaimed author of The Baroque Clarinet, Albert R. Rice, now presents a comprehensive study of the clarinet in use through the classical period, from 1760 to 1830. During the early part of this intensive period of musical experimentation, the clarinet was transformed from a typically baroque instrument to an essential piece of the classical ensemble. Barely a half century later, in 1812, Iwan Mueller developed the thirteen-keyed clarinet, which brought the instrument into the Romantic age.
The Clarinet in the Classical Period provides a detailed review of the achievements of the period's most important clarinet makers, including James Wood, Teobaldo Monzani, Jean-Francois Simiot, as well as the innovations of creative performers such as Iwan Mueller and Cesar Janssen. Rice offers new research regarding the practice of clef notation by Italian, French, and German composers, clarifying their use of transposing clarinets. The book also explores the creative relationships of two key trios of composer, maker, and performer - Carl Maria von Weber, Heinrich Baermann, and Jean-Jacques Baumann; and Mozart, Anton Stadler, and Theodore Lotz - examining how clarinet construction and performance practice developed in tandem with musical styles.
Essential reading for clarinetists and for those who love their music, The Clarinet in the Classical Period recounts a fascinating chapter in the instrument's history.

The Eloquent Oboe - A History of the Hautboy from 1640 to 1760 (Paperback): Bruce Haynes The Eloquent Oboe - A History of the Hautboy from 1640 to 1760 (Paperback)
Bruce Haynes
R2,272 Discovery Miles 22 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Eloquent Oboe is a history of the hautboy, the oboe of the Baroque period. It reflects recent interest in this instrument, which was the first of the woodwinds to join with strings in creating the new orchestra, and had by the end of the 20th century again become a regular presence on the concert scene. Between 1640 and 1760 this type of oboe underwent dramatic changes in both function and physical form, and the majority of its solo and chamber repertoire appeared. Haynes examines in detail the hautboy's structure, its players, makers, and composers, issues of performing style and period techniques, how and where the instrument was played, and who listened to it.

Taffanel: Genius of the Flute (Paperback, New): Edward Blakeman Taffanel: Genius of the Flute (Paperback, New)
Edward Blakeman
R1,698 Discovery Miles 16 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The French flute player and conductor Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) was an extraordinary virtuoso and a major figure in fin de siecle Parisian musical life. Based on a treasure trove of private documents of Taffanel's previously unpublished letters and papers, Taffanel: Genius of the Flute recounts the rich story of his multi-faceted career as a player, conductor, composer, teacher, and leader of musical organizations.
As a player, Taffanel had a rare vision of the flute as a serious, expressive instrument and is credited with re-establishing it in the mainstream of music. He was also an inspiring teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, to whom many modern flutists can trace their roots. In 1879, Taffanel founded the Societe de musique de chambre pour instruments a vent (Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments), reviving the wind ensemble music of Mozart and Beethoven, and breaking the dominance of piano and strings in recital and chamber music. From 1890, he served as chief conductor at the Paris Opera and the Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire (Paris Conservatory Orchestra)--the first time a flutist, rather than a string player, had been appointed to such key positions.
Edward Blakeman expertly places these and many other elements of Taffanel's story in the rich political and cultural backdrop of the time, evoking Conservatoire intrigues, the Societe des concerts, and Taffanel's relationships with various musicians and major composers. Blakeman details the circumstances surrounding landmark commissions, performances, and repertoire, and weaves the details from Taffanel's correspondence with first-person interviews and flute lore. What emerges is a portrait of an all-around musician who was also a modest and genial man."
