Dirk Ligter is na bewering in 1860 op ’n plaas in die Tankwa-Karoo gebore. Hy het die naam “die Robin Hood van die Tankwa” gekry omdat hy dikwels by boere wat glo nie hulle werkers goed behandel het nie, skaap gesteel en geslag het om vir die betrokke boer se werkers te gee en vir homself ook ’n gedeelte te hou.

Sy vuurtjie het gereeld hoog in ’n berghang gebrand, waar hy vleis gaargemaak en oornag het, maar hy is nooit deur die polisie daar vasgetrek nie.

Die verhale oor hierdie legendariese skaapslagter met sy blikkitaar het danksy Boerneef en die toegewyde navorsing van Joe Dauth bewaar gebly.
