The Jewish practice of bar mitzvah dates back to the twelfth century, but this ancient cultural ritual has changed radically since then, evolving with the times and adapting to local conditions. For many Jewish-American families, a child's bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah is both a major social event and a symbolic means of asserting the family's ongoing connection to the core values of Judaism. Coming of Age in Jewish America takes an inside look at bar and bat mitzvahs in the twenty-first century, examining how the practices have continued to morph and exploring how they serve as a sometimes shaky bridge between the values of contemporary American culture and Judaic tradition. Interviewing over 200 individuals involved in bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies, from family members to religious educators to rabbis, Patricia Keer Munro presents a candid portrait of the conflicts that often emerge and the negotiations that ensue. In the course of her study, she charts how this ritual is rife with contradictions; it is a private family event and a public community activity, and for the child, it is both an educational process and a high-stakes performance. Through detailed observations of Conservative, Orthodox, Reform, and independent congregations in the San Francisco Bay Area, Munro draws intriguing, broad-reaching conclusions about both the current state and likely future of American Judaism. In the process, she shows not only how American Jews have forged a unique set of bar and bat mitzvah practices, but also how these rituals continue to shape a distinctive Jewish-American identity.
Are artistic engagements evolving, or attracting more attention? The range of artistic protest actions shows how the globalisation of art is also the globalisation of art politics. Transforming Teen Behavior: Parent-Teen Protocols for Psychosocial Skills Training is a clinician's guide for treating teens exhibiting emotional and behavioral disturbances. Unlike other protocols, the program involves both parents and teens together, is intended for use by varied provider types of differing training and experience, and is modular in nature to allow flexibility of service. This protocol is well-established, standardized, evidence-based, and interdisciplinary. There are 6 modules outlining parent training techniques and 6 parallel and complementary modules outlining psychosocial skills training techniques for teens. The program is unique in its level of parent involvement and the degree to which it is explicit, structured, and standardized. This book is not just for parents! While it was initially written for them, increasingly adults working with adolescents also sought help. I tried putting something together specifically for these adults but found that the content is also in this book.These are some common woes of adolescents and adults about each other - 'My parents don't understand me.', 'Why is my child emotionally explosive all the time?', 'My parents are always nagging.', 'Teens cannot seem to be able to think about the consequence first before acting!'The understanding-divide between adolescents and adults seems to be getting wider. Concretely on a day-to-day basis, adolescents and parents are clashing with each other over mind and heart issues; and no one seemed to be able to 'get' the other. Even if one 'got it', it would not take long before one would challenge the other about it.Neuroscience has informed us that the divide has always been there and will continue to be there because it is developmental. The prefrontal cortex will only be fully developed about ten years after the limbic system becomes fully functional. These two areas are primarily responsible for setting and achieving goals, and behavioural-emotional responses, respectively. The implication of this reality is huge, and it explains the 'clash of the mind and heart' issues at so many levels; specifically, rational-emotional conflict during adult-adolescent engagement.One of the ways to reduce that conflict is to heighten the understanding of adult-child developmental realities and learn the strategies that would help the other succeed. Such endeavours seemed to benefit only the adult more because they seemed to be more matured developmentally, but if we know how to help adolescents appreciate the realities, they are able to also benefit from it and manage the constant 'clashing' with the adults.Thus, this book proposes the framework and strategies to help youths succeed and includes some stories of professional youth work, where effective youth engagement strategies are highlighted by youths themselves in retrospect.

This book engages with the experience of space and time in youth cultures across the world. Putting together contemporary case studies on young transnationalists, young glocals and young protesters in cities on the five continents, it analyzes new agoras and chronotopes in global cities. It is based on a selection of papers first presented to the International Sociological Association (ISA) Research Committee 34 session on Youth Cultures, Space and Time that took place during the ISA World Congresses of Sociology in Gothenburg, Sweden (2010), and in Yokohama, Japan (2014). This title offers an insight into key contemporary global issues relating to the lives and experiences of young Muslims. Many Muslim societies, regardless of location, are displaying a 'youth bulge', where more than half their populations are under the age of 25. Explores how young people from communities targeted in the War on Terror engage with the "political," even while they are under constant scrutiny and surveillance Since the attacks of 9/11, the banner of national security has led to intense monitoring of the politics of Muslim and Arab Americans. Young people from these communities have come of age in a time when the question of political engagement is both urgent and fraught. In The 9/11 Generation, Sunaina Marr Maira uses extensive ethnography to understand the meaning of political subjecthood and mobilization for Arab, South Asian, and Afghan American youth. Maira explores how young people from communities targeted in the War on Terror engage with the "political," forging coalitions based on new racial and ethnic categories, even while they are under constant scrutiny and surveillance, and organizing around notions of civil rights and human rights. The 9/11 Generation explores the possibilities and pitfalls of rights-based organizing at a moment when the vocabulary of rights and democracy has been used to justify imperial interventions, such as the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. What makes a film a teen film? And why, when it represents such powerful and enduring ideas about youth and adolescence, is teen film usually viewed as culturally insignificant? Teen film is usually discussed as a representation of the changing American teenager, highlighting the institutions of high school and the nuclear family and experiments in sexual development and identity formation. But not every film featuring these components is a teen film, and not every teen film is American. Arguing that teen film is always a story about becoming a citizen and a subject, "Teen Film" presents a new history of the genre, surveys the existing body of scholarship, and introduces key critical tools for discussing teen film. Today, two cultural forces are converging to make America's youth easy targets for sex traffickers. Younger and younger girls are engaging in adult sexual attitudes and practices, and the pressure to conform means thousands have little self-worth and are vulnerable to exploitation. At the same time, thanks to social media, texting, and chatting services, predators are able to ferret out their victims more easily than ever before. In "Walking Prey," advocate and former victim Holly Austin Smith shows how middle class suburban communities are fast becoming the new epicenter of sex trafficking in America. Smith speaks from experience: Without consistent positive guidance or engagement, Holly was ripe for exploitation at age fourteen. A chance encounter with an older man led her to run away from home, and she soon found herself on the streets of Atlantic City. Her experience led her, two decades later, to become one of the foremost advocates for trafficking victims. Smith argues that these young women should be treated as victims by law enforcement, but that too often the criminal justice system lacks the resources and training to prevent the vicious cycle of prostitution. This is a clarion call to take a sharp look at one of the most striking human rights abuses, and one that is going on in our own backyard.

does religion contribute to the formation of teenagers' sexual
values and actions? What difference, if any, does religion make in

In this book, David Brandt examines the legal, psychological, and cultural issues relevant to understanding antisocial behaviour in adolescence.
