Moral Repair - Reconstructing Moral Relations after Wrongdoing (Hardcover, New): Margaret Urban Walker Moral Repair - Reconstructing Moral Relations after Wrongdoing (Hardcover, New)
Margaret Urban Walker
R3,373 R2,844 Discovery Miles 28 440 Save R529 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Moral Repair examines the ethics and moral psychology of responses to wrongdoing. Explaining the emotional bonds and normative expectations that keep human beings responsive to moral standards and responsible to each other, Margaret Urban Walker uses realistic examples of both personal betrayal and political violence to analyze how moral bonds are damaged by serious wrongs and what must be done to repair the damage. Focusing on victims of wrong, their right to validation, and their sense of justice, Walker presents a unified and detailed philosophical account of hope, trust, resentment, forgiveness, and making amends - the emotions and practices that sustain moral relations. Moral Repair joins a multidisciplinary literature concerned with transitional and restorative justice, reparations, and restoring individual dignity and mutual trust in the wake of serious wrongs.

Philosophical Perspectives on Infinity (Hardcover): Graham Oppy Philosophical Perspectives on Infinity (Hardcover)
Graham Oppy
R3,161 R2,668 Discovery Miles 26 680 Save R493 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an exploration of philosophical questions about infinity. Graham Oppy examines how the infinite lurks everywhere, both in science and in our ordinary thoughts about the world. He also analyses the many puzzles and paradoxes that follow in the train of the infinite. Even simple notions, such as counting, adding and maximising present serious difficulties. Other topics examined include the nature of space and time, infinities in physical science, infinities in theories of probability and decision, the nature of part/whole relations, mathematical theories of the infinite, and infinite regression and principles of sufficient reason.

The Enlightenment Project in the Analytic Conversation (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998): N. Capaldi The Enlightenment Project in the Analytic Conversation (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998)
N. Capaldi
R5,213 Discovery Miles 52 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Analytic philosophy has been a dominant intellectual movement in the 20th century and a reflection of the cultural pre-eminence of scientism. In response to analytic philosophy's peculiar reticence (and inability) to discuss itself, this book provides its first comprehensive history and critique. The central element in the analytic conversation has been the Enlightenment Project: the appeal to an autonomous human reason, freed of any higher authority and channeling itself through science as its privileged tool. This centrality is demonstrated by systematically examining its presence and development in the philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology, language, psychology, social science, ethics, political philosophy, and the history of philosophy. This journey highlights the internal logical disintegration of that project. Post-modern relativism is its natural offspring and not a viable alternative. The Enlightenment Project's conception of physical science is defective; this defective conception of physical science renders the analytic conception of social science, philosophical psychology, and epistemology defective; and that defective conception of the human condition leads to defective conceptions of both moral and political philosophy, specifically the idea of social engineering or social technology. Throughout the book, an alternative conception of philosophy is presented as a way out of the abyss of analysis, an alternative that reconnects philosophy with the mainstream of Western civilization and initiates the process of providing a coherent cultural narrative. This book will be of particular interest to any sophisticated reader concerned about the lack of a coherent cultural narrative.

A Theory of Argument (Paperback): Mark Vorobej A Theory of Argument (Paperback)
Mark Vorobej
R1,194 Discovery Miles 11 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A Theory of Argument is an advanced textbook intended for students in philosophy, communications studies and linguistics who have completed at least one course in argumentation theory, information logic, critical thinking or formal logic. Containing nearly 400 exercises, Mark Vorobej develops a novel approach to argument interpretation and evaluation. One of the key themes of the book is that we cannot succeed in distinguishing good argument from bad arguments until we learn to listen carefully to others. Part I develops a relativistic account of argument cogency that allows for rational disagreement. Part II offers a comprehensive and rigorous account of argument diagramming. Hybrid arguments are contrasted with linked and convergent arguments, and a novel technique is introduced for graphically recording disagreements with authorial claims.

Arguments about Arguments - Systematic, Critical, and Historical Essays In Logical Theory (Paperback): Maurice A. Finocchiaro Arguments about Arguments - Systematic, Critical, and Historical Essays In Logical Theory (Paperback)
Maurice A. Finocchiaro
R1,536 Discovery Miles 15 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together a selection of essays by one of the pre-eminent scholars of informal logic. Following an approach that is empirical but not psychological; dialectical but not dialogical, and focused on interpretation without neglecting evaluation, Maurice Finocchiaro defines concepts such as reasoning, argument, argument analysis, critical reasoning, methodological reflection, judgment, critical thinking, and informal logic. He defends ideas about the rarity of fallacies but frequently of fallacious reasoning; the asymmetry of positive and negative in argumentation, interpretation and evaluation and the role of critical thinking in science, among other topics. Containing extended critiques of the views of many contemporary scholars, he also integrates into the discussion Arnauld's Post-Royal Logic, Gramsci's theory of intellectuals, and case studies from the history of science, particularly the work of Galileo, Newton, Huygens, and Lavoisier.

Human Identity and Bioethics (Hardcover): David DeGrazia Human Identity and Bioethics (Hardcover)
David DeGrazia
R2,539 R2,145 Discovery Miles 21 450 Save R394 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When philosophers address personal identity, they usually explore numerical identity: what are the criteria for a person's continuing existence? When non-philosophers address personal identity, they often have in mind narrative identity: Which characteristics of a particular person are salient to her self-conception? This book develops accounts of both senses of identity, arguing that both are normatively important, and is unique in its exploration of a range of issues in bioethics through the lens of identity. Defending a biological view of our numerical identity and a framework for understanding narrative identity, DeGrazia investigates various issues for which considerations of identity prove critical: the definition of death; the authority of advance directives in cases of severe dementia; the use of enhancement technologies; prenatal genetic interventions; and certain types of reproductive choices. He demonstrates the power of personal identity theory to illuminate issues in bioethics as they bring philosophical theory to life.

God and the Ethics of Belief - New Essays in Philosophy of Religion (Hardcover): Andrew Dole, Andrew Chignell God and the Ethics of Belief - New Essays in Philosophy of Religion (Hardcover)
Andrew Dole, Andrew Chignell
R3,028 R2,556 Discovery Miles 25 560 Save R472 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Philosophy of religion in the Anglo-American tradition experienced a 'rebirth' following the 1955 publication of New Essays in Philosophical Theology (eds. Antony Flew and Alisdair MacIntyre). Fifty years later, this volume of New Essays offers a sampling of the best work in what is now a very active field, written by some of its most prominent members. A substantial introduction sketches the developments of the last half-century, while also describing the 'ethics of belief' debate in epistemology and showing how it connects to explicitly religious concerns and to the topics of the individual contributions. These topics include: the relationship between God and the natural laws; the metaphysics of bodily resurrection; the role of appeal to 'mystery' in the religious life; the justification of both theistic belief generally and more specific doctrinal beliefs; and the social-political aspects of religious faith and practice.

Brute Rationality - Normativity and Human Action (Hardcover): Joshua Gert Brute Rationality - Normativity and Human Action (Hardcover)
Joshua Gert
R1,985 R1,681 Discovery Miles 16 810 Save R304 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a new account of normative practical reasons and the way in which they contribute to the rationality of action. Rather than simply 'counting in favour of' actions, normative reasons play two logically distinct roles: requiring action and justifying action. The distinction between these two roles explains why some reasons do not seem relevant to the rational status of an action unless the agent cares about them, while other reasons retain all their force regardless of the agent's attitude. It also explains why the class of rationally permissible action is wide enough to contain not only all morally required action, but also much selfish and immoral action. The book will appeal to a range of readers interested in practical reason in particular, and moral theory more generally.

Ethics and the A Priori - Selected Essays on Moral Psychology and Meta-Ethics (Paperback, New): Michael Smith Ethics and the A Priori - Selected Essays on Moral Psychology and Meta-Ethics (Paperback, New)

Over the last fifteen years, Michael Smith has written a series of seminal essays about the nature of belief and desire, the status of normative judgment, and the relevance of the views we take on both these topics to the accounts we give of our nature as free and responsible agents. This long awaited collection comprises some of the most influential of Smith's essays. Among the topics covered are: the Humean theory of motivating reasons, the nature of normative reasons, Williams and Korsgaard on internal and external reasons, the nature of self-control, weakness of will, compulsion, freedom, responsibility, the analysis of our rational capacities, moral realism, the dispositional theory of value, the supervenience of the normative on the non-normative, the error theory, rationalist treatments of moral judgment, the practicality requirement on moral judgment and non-cognivist. This collection will be of interest to students in philosophy and psychology.

Divine Motivation Theory (Hardcover, New): Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski Divine Motivation Theory (Hardcover, New)
Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski
R2,977 R2,516 Discovery Miles 25 160 Save R461 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Widely regarded as one of the foremost figures in contemporary philosophy of religion, this book by Linda Zagzebski is a major contribution to ethical theory and theological ethics. At the core of the book lies a form of virtue theory based on the emotions. Quite distinct from deontological, consequentialist and teleological virtue theories, this one has a particular theological, indeed Christian, foundation. The theory helps to resolve philosophical problems and puzzles of various kinds: the dispute between cognitivism and non-cognitivism in moral psychology, the claims and counterclaims of realism and anti-realism in the metaphysics of value, and paradoxes of perfect goodness in natural theology, including the problem of evil. As with Zagzebski's previous Cambridge book Virtues of the Mind, this book will be sought out eagerly by a broad swathe of professionals and graduate students in philosophy and religious studies.

Truth and Truthmakers (Paperback, New): D.M. Armstrong Truth and Truthmakers (Paperback, New)
D.M. Armstrong
R673 Discovery Miles 6 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Truths are determined not by what we believe, but by the way the world is. Or so realists about truth believe. Philosophers call such theories correspondence theories of truth. Truthmaking theory, which now has many adherents among contemporary philosophers, is a recent development of a realist theory of truth, and in this book, first published in 2004, D. M. Armstrong offers the first full-length study of this theory. He examines its applications to different sorts of truth, including contingent truths, modal truths, truths about the past and the future, and mathematical truths. In a clear, even-handed and non-technical discussion he makes a compelling case for truthmaking and its importance in philosophy. His book marks a significant contribution to the debate and will be of interest to a wide range of readers working in analytical philosophy.

William S. Robinson has for many years written insightfully about the mind-body problem. In Understanding Phenomenal Consciousness he focuses on sensory experience (e.g., pain, afterimages) and perception qualities such as colours, sounds and odours to present a dualistic view of the mind, called Qualitative Event Realism, that goes against the dominant materialist views. This theory is relevant to the development of a science of consciousness which is now being pursued not only by philosophers but by researchers in psychology and the brain sciences. This provocative book will interest students and professionals who work in the philosophy of mind and will also have cross-disciplinary appeal in cognitive psychology and the brain sciences.

The Cambridge Companion to Quine (Paperback, New): Roger F. Gibson Jr The Cambridge Companion to Quine (Paperback, New)
Roger F. Gibson Jr
R995 Discovery Miles 9 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

W. V. Quine (1908–2000) was quite simply the most distinguished analytic philosopher of the later half of the twentieth century. His celebrated attack on the analytic/synthetic tradition heralded a major shift away from the views of language descended from logical positivism. His most important book, Word and Object, introduced the concept of indeterminacy of radical translation, a bleak view of the nature of the language with which we ascribe thoughts and beliefs to ourselves and others. Quine is also famous for the view that epistemology should be naturalized, that is conducted in a scientific spirit with the object of investigating the relationship between the inputs of experience and the outputs of belief. The eleven essays in this volume cover all the central topics of Quine's philosophy: the underdetermination of physical theory, analycity, naturalism, propositional attitudes, behaviorism, reference and ontology, positivism, holism and logic.

Word and World - Practice and the Foundations of Language (Hardcover): Patricia Hanna, Bernard Harrison Word and World - Practice and the Foundations of Language (Hardcover)
Patricia Hanna, Bernard Harrison
R1,782 R1,537 Discovery Miles 15 370 Save R245 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This important book proposes a new account of the nature of language, founded upon an original interpretation of Wittgenstein. The authors deny the existence of a direct referential relationship between words and things. Rather, the link between language and world is a two-stage one, in which meaning is used and in which a natural language should be understood as fundamentally a collection of socially devised and maintained practices. Arguing against the philosophical mainstream descending from Frege and Russell to Quine, Davidson, Dummett, McDowell, Evans, Putnam, Kripke and others, the authors demonstrate that discarding the notion of reference does not entail relativism or semantic nihilism. A provocative re-examination of the interrelations of language and social practice, this book will interest not only philosophers of language but also linguists, psycholinguists, students of communication and all those concerned with the nature and acquisition of human linguistic capacities.

Literal Meaning (Hardcover, New): Francois Recanati Literal Meaning (Hardcover, New)
Francois Recanati
R2,628 R2,219 Discovery Miles 22 190 Save R409 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

According to the dominant position among philosophers of language today, we can legitimately ascribe determinate contents (such as truth-conditions) to natural language sentences, independently of what the speaker actually means. This view contrasts with that held by ordinary language philosophers fifty years ago: according to them, speech acts, not sentences, are the primary bearers of content. Francois Recanati argues for the relevance of this controversy to the current debate about semantics and pragmatics. Is 'what is said' (as opposed to merely implied) determined by linguistic conventions, or is it an aspect of 'speaker's meaning'? Do we need pragmatics to fix truth-conditions? What is 'literal meaning'? To what extent is semantic composition a creative process? How pervasive is context-sensitivity? Recanati provides an original and insightful defence of 'contextualism', and offers an informed survey of the spectrum of positions held by linguists and philosophers working at the semantics/pragmatics interface.

Walter R Ott
R1,917 R1,623 Discovery Miles 16 230 Save R294 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines John Locke’s claims about the nature and workings of language. Walter Ott proposes a new interpretation of Locke’s thesis that words signify ideas in the mind of the speaker, and argues that rather than employing such notions as sense or reference, Locke relies on an ancient tradition that understands signification as reliable indication. He then uses this interpretation to explain crucial areas of Locke’s metaphysics and epistemology, including essence, abstraction, knowledge, and mental representation. His discussion, which is the first book-length treatment of its topic, challenges many of the current orthodox readings of Locke, and will be of interest to historians of philosophy and philosophers of language alike.

A Physicalist Manifesto - Thoroughly Modern Materialism (Hardcover, New): Andrew Melnyk A Physicalist Manifesto - Thoroughly Modern Materialism (Hardcover, New)
Andrew Melnyk
R3,223 R2,720 Discovery Miles 27 200 Save R503 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work is the fullest treatment yet of the comprehensive physicalist view that, in some important sense, everything is physical. Andrew Melnyk argues that the view is best formulated by appeal to a carefully worked-out notion of realization, rather than supervenience. According to Melnyk, physicalism must be importantly reductionist; it need not repudiate causal and explanatory claims framed in non-physical language; and it has the a posteriori epistemic status of a broad-scope scientific hypothesis. In the two concluding chapters he asserts in unprecedented detail that contemporary science provides no significant empirical evidence against physicalism and some considerable evidence for it. Written in an exceptionally clear style, this book will appeal to professionals and students in philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and philosophy of science.

The Value of Knowledge and the Pursuit of Understanding (Hardcover, New): Jonathan L. Kvanvig The Value of Knowledge and the Pursuit of Understanding (Hardcover, New)
Jonathan L. Kvanvig
R3,180 R2,682 Discovery Miles 26 820 Save R498 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jonathan Kvanvig argues that epistemology cannot ignore the question of the value of knowledge. He questions one of the most fundamental assumptions in epistemology--that knowledge is always more valuable than the value of its parts. Using Plato's Meno as a starting point, Kvanvig tackles the different arguments about the value of knowledge and comes to the conclusion that it is less valuable than generally assumed. The book will appeal to students and professional philosophers in epistemology.

Ambiguity and Logic (Paperback, New): Frederic Schick Ambiguity and Logic (Paperback, New)
Frederic Schick
R781 Discovery Miles 7 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"In this book, Frederic Schick extends and applies the decision theory he proposed in two previous Cambridge books: Understanding Action (1991) and Making Choices (1997). He shows how the way we see situations affects the choices we make, and he develops a logic of thought responsive to how things are seen. The book considers many questions of choosing and some familiar human predicaments. Why do people in choice experiments act so often against expectations? How might they and the experimenters be looking at different problems in them? Why do people cooperate so often where the textbook logic excludes that? How can there be weakness of will - and must it always be faulted? Does how we see things affect what they mean, and what are people reporting who say that their lives have no meaning for them? These very different questions turn out to have some closely related answers. There are vivid discussions here of cases drawn from many sources. The book will interest all who study how we choose and act, whether they are philosophers, psychologists, or economists - or any combination." Frederic Schick is Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers University.

Jane Heal

Jane Heal argues that central to our ability to arrive at views about others' thoughts is not knowledge of some theory of the mind but rather an ability to imagine alternative worlds and how things appear from another person's point of view. She then applies this view to questions of how we represent others' thoughts, the shape of psychological concepts, the nature of rationality and the possibility of first person authority. This book is of interest to students and professionals in philosophy of mind and language.

Rethinking Commonsense Psychology - A Critique of Folk Psychology, Theory of Mind and Simulation (Paperback): Matthew Ratcliffe Rethinking Commonsense Psychology - A Critique of Folk Psychology, Theory of Mind and Simulation (Paperback)
Matthew Ratcliffe
R2,087 Discovery Miles 20 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What is it to understand another person? A popular view in philosophy of mind, cognitive science and various other disciplines is that interpersonal understanding is a matter ofemploying a 'commonsense' or 'folk' psychology, consisting primarily of an ability to attribute internal propositional attitudes on the basis of behavioural observations. The emphasis of recent debates has been on which mechanisms enable us to do this, how they arise during development and how they might have evolved, rather than on whether we actually do it at all. Ratcliffe disputes the shared premise on which these debates rest. He argues that 'folk psychology', as generally described, is a theoretically motivated, simplistic and misleading abstraction from social life, which is wrongly asserted to be 'commonsense' or 'what the folk think'. Drawing on phenomenology, neuroscience and development psychology, he offers an alternative account of interpersonal understanding. This account emphasizes a distinctive kind of bodily relatedness between people and the extent to which interpersonal interactions are regulated by shared social environments.

Thought and World - An Austere Portrayal of Truth, Reference, and Semantic Correspondence (Paperback): Christopher S. Hill Thought and World - An Austere Portrayal of Truth, Reference, and Semantic Correspondence (Paperback)
Christopher S. Hill
R950 Discovery Miles 9 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is an important family of semantic notions that are applied to thoughts and to the conceptual constituents of thoughts--as when one says that the thought that the Universe is expanding is true. Christopher Hill presents a theory of the content of such notions. That theory is largely deflationary in spirit. It represents a broad range of semantic notions free from substantive metaphysical and empirical presuppositions. He also explains the relationship of mirroring or semantic correspondence linking thoughts to reality.
