"Drawing - The Process" is a collection of papers, theories and
interviews based on the conference and exhibition of the same name
held at Kingston University in 2003.
Much debate and research is currently undertaken in this area
and it is the intention of the book to galvanize this, while
providing a vehicle for deep enquiry. The publication will firstly
comprise a collection of refereed papers representing a breadth of
activity and research around the issues of drawing within the broad
context of art and design activity. The second dimension of the
book will be an examination of the drawing processes of high
profile practitioners.
The publication will encompass the best contemporary investigation
of a subject pivotal to art and design activity, and should be
recognized as a fundamental text for students at both undergraduate
and postgraduate levels.
This instructional drawing book is intended to guide the reader
through a story-telling based approach to gesture drawing,
utilizing different techniques and exercises that encourage and
develop creative problem solving as it relates to observational
studies. This book clearly outlines a work flow and process with a
simple exercise program that encourages the artist to ask questions
and create work that engages not only their audience but
themselves. Rich illustrations are included throughout that depict
this workflow and also different drawing and mark-making
techniques, and how to apply the exercises throughout the course of
the book. Included are video drawing tutorials and examples. Key
Features The approach to drawing as explained in the book is broken
down into simple, clearly defined concepts. Each chapter outlines a
further step in the drawing process, ending with a technique or
exercise the reader can then execute to begin applying each concept
to their work. Ample amount of illustrations drawn exclusively for
this book or taken directly from the author's physical classes to
clearly show the reader individual concepts, exercises, techniques,
ideas, etc., so the reader may feel comfortable enough to follow
the program. Each chapter includes a chapter objective as well as a
summary and ample amount of illustrations which relate to the
chapter objective. Key Terms will also be highlighted and defined
so that they may be referenced throughout the book without causing
unnecessary confusion. Companion video tutorials that show the
reader different topics and exercises for reference.
Despite the modern dominance of computer graphics programs and
digital cameras, the ability todraw geological structures manually
remains a necessity in academic geology and beyond. Drawings serve
for quick and simple documentation in the field or at the
microscope. They can be applied as a language of their own as well
as be adapted to suit specific requirements. Moreover, geological
drawing improves observational ability and contributes to the
understanding of geological structures and structure-forming
processes. Geological drawing is assisted scientific thinking.
Drawing Geological Structures provides undergraduate as well as
graduate and practicing geologists with a thorough, step-by-step
practical guide to the art of geological drawing. Beginning with
the basics, the book covers thin sections, sample sections, samples
and geological stereograms. The chapters provide examples of how
drawings evolve and are complemented by exercises, allowing the
reader to practice their drawing prior to going out into the field
or working at the microscope. Users of this unique guide will
develop their knowledge and technical vocabulary whilst also
improving their drawing skills.

shares in this book. Learn straightforward strategies to make your
paintings more interesting and dramatic, such as simplifying the
foreground, composing with abstract shapes and harmonizing colors.

Despite the growing numbers of milling machines in amateur workshops, a majority of model engineers still rely on a lathe and a drilling machine as the basic equipment.
The lathe, 'the king of machine tools', can be adapted for almost any function, but next to turning its most valuable use is for milling operations, either using the lathe itself to drive the cutters or by extending its scope by the addition of a separate milling attachment.
One of the most popular titles in model engineering books for almost sixty years was Milling in the Lathe, which first appeared in the 1920s and continued in updated and revised editions until 1983. This book replaces it, covering all the basic information it contained and adding to it from recent experiences and developments.
A mentor to Georgia O'Keeffe, Dow literally "wrote the book" on
composition. First published in 1899, this manual influenced
generations of teachers and students. Relevant to all of the visual
arts, it employs a workbook format to impart principles regarding
harmonic relations between lines, color, and dark and light
patterns.

show students how to perceive things in order to be able to draw
them correctly. The first section is dedicated to drawing the human
figure, while the second portion deals with how to draw a wide
range of modern garments and accessories and the types of
techniques used to render them convincingly and elegantly in
different fabric designs and textures. This volume offers a

The saw is one of the most basic tools and tends to be taken very
much for granted. Many hours and much effort can be saved, and more
accurate work produced, if the user has the knowledge of how his
saw works and how to keep it in good condition. In this book Ian
Bradley provides detailed guidance on the use and maintenance of
all types of saw, both hand and mechanical, from the humble junior
hacksaw to circular and bandsaws, in the comprehensive and succinct
manner that has made him such a respected writer on workshop
matters.
The act of field sketching allows us to experience the landscape
first-hand - rather than reliance upon plans, maps and photographs
at a distance, back in the studio. Aimed primarily at landscape
architects, Janet Swailes takes the reader on a journey through the
art of field sketching, providing guidance and tips to develop
skills from those starting out on a design course, to those looking
to improve their sketching. Combining techniques from landscape
architecture and the craft and sensibilities of arts practice, she
invites us to experience sensations directly out in the field to
enrich our work: to look closely at the effects of light and
weather; understand the lie and shapes of the land through travel
and walking; and to consider lines of sight from the inside out as
well as outside in. Full colour throughout with examples,
checklists and case studies of other sketchers' methods, this is an
inspirational book to encourage landscape architects to spend more
time in the field and reconnect with the basics of design through
drawing practice.
In Sketching Women, three professional studio artists (Kozo Ueda,
PhD, Takahiro Okada, PhD and Minoru Hirota, PhD) join forces to
show you how to sketch the female figure through 55 step-by-step
drawing lessons. Each instructor walks you through their philosophy
for croquis sketching. Croquis sketches are quickly-rendered
drawings that capture the essentials of a subject's form and pose
with relatively few expressive lines. There are four levels of
sketching described in the book: 1-minute croquis: very rapid
gesture drawings that capture only the artist's impressions of the
form, and where the pencil stays in contact with the paper for
practically the entire session 2-minute croquis: another quick
sketch, but with more attention paid to the character and rhythm of
the lines and how they help to express the essence of the form
5-minute croquis: a more finished drawing where added tonal
variations suggest volume and anatomical details 10-minute croquis:
more of a finished drawing than true croquis, the longer session
allows the luxury of adding fine details such as the facial
expression, the character of the hands and clothing texture Learn
to sketch the following: Individual body parts (including faces)
and their bone structure and muscles Standing and sitting poses
Nudes and clothed figures Light and dark tonal variations Dynamic
poses Color drawings You'll quickly hone your sketching skills with
this life-drawing classroom-in-a-book. The expert advice and
observations, dozens of poses to study, as well as
easy-to-understand notes and tips make it easy to understand how
the skeleton, muscles and posture all come together to express the
uniquely female form.
Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals have always fascinated
people but they pose vast problems for the artist. How do you go
about recreating the anatomy and behaviour of a creature we've
never seen? How can we restore landscapes long lost to time? And
where does the boundary between palaeontology - the science of
understanding fossils- and artistic licence lie? In this
outstanding book, Mark Witton shares his detailed paintings and
great experience of drawing and painting extinct species. The
approaches used in rendering these impressive creatures are
discussed and demonstrate the problems, as well as the unexpected
freedoms, that palaeontological artists are faced with. The book
showcases over ninety scientifically credible paintings of some of
the most spectacular animals in the Earth's history, as well as may
less familiar species.
