of collage painting for decades and his work has a sought-after
vitality. He brings his latest guidance, ideas and techniques on a
subject about which he is passionate: coastal painting. From his
home near the Devon coast, he and co author (art writer) Susie
Hodge, cover all aspects of mixed media painting. From considering

'The hardest part of being creative lies in simply deciding to do
so. And, after you've done that, Roya's astonishingly useful book
is a great place to begin.' Seth Godin, author of The Practice How
to Be a Creative Thinker is a map to your creative mind, the places
your creative potential resides, and the allies and enemies along
the way. It's a practical guide to the science and the psychology
of creativity and the conditions required for cultivating it. We
think creativity is for those lucky enough to be born with it -
something you either have or you don't. But this is untrue.
Creativity is more than God-given talent, and it's more than
artistic flair. It's the ability to come up with a new idea in any
area or setting. And most importantly, it can be learned by anyone.
In How to Be a Creative Thinker, professional creative and
strategic designer Roya Azadi teaches you techniques to encourage
creative thinking and shows how you can unlock your creative
potential. She reveals that technology is inhibiting our ability to
daydream and explains why this headspace is so important if you
want to 'catch a live one'. You'll learn to not fear failure by
understanding that it's actually fertile ground for creativity.
Throughout the book there are interviews, quotes, explainers and
activities to inspire creative thought along the way. By the end of
the book, you'll be bubbling with creative force to take out into
the world and make real change. The Survive the Modern World series
tackles big subjects in a fun and digestible way. The tone is frank
and chatty, but the content is comprehensive. Upskill and expand
your knowledge with these accessible pocket guides.
The seminal writing of Carlos Cruz-Diez, best known for his
experiential works exploring color and its properties Trained as a
painter, Carlos Cruz-Diez (1923-2019) developed a conceptual
platform for his work based on optical and chromatic phenomena,
which led him to take a revolutionary new approach to his work
beginning in 1959. Building on the chromatic experiments of figures
like Sir Isaac Newton, the impressionists, and Josef Albers,
Cruz-Diez explored the perception of color as an autonomous reality
evolving in space and time, unaided by form or support, in a
perpetual present. Originally published in Spanish in 1989,
Reflection on Color details Cruz-Diez's theories of color and
traces the aesthetic and conceptual evolution of his practice.
Though the book was translated into English in Cruz-Diez's
lifetime, it never saw broad distribution. In this text, Cruz-Diez
explores eight of his major investigations into color phenomena,
including his signature Physichromie and Chromosaturation series.
Generously illustrated with examples of Cruz-Diez's work, this
important text introduces Cruz-Diez's writing and thinking to a new
generation of artists and scholars. Distributed for the Cruz-Diez
Foundation

painting techniques, including glazing, scumbling, and stippling,
as well as how to paint from photographs, create ambient lighting,
arrange a composition, work with multiple subjects, and more.

beautiful finished piece of acrylic artwork. With a diverse range
of subjects, artists will find guidance, tips, and stunning artwork
to inspire on virtually every page.
This book describes in detail the materials and techniques used by
medieval iconographers. It offers information about the natural
sources, the raw materials, the tools and the technologies involved
in preparing them. The book allows entry into the secretive world
of very knowledgeable and skilled artisans, about which very little
is known. Topics covered include raw materials, pigments, binders,
solvents, adhesives, inks and varnishes. Special chapters will be
dedicated to the fresco technique as practiced by the early
iconographers, grinding, painting on glass and the
training/apprenticeship of these craftsmen.

Throughout his career, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner employed a highly
inventive and original use of colour. He favoured novel
applications of paint in unusual matte finishes. For Kirchner,
colour was of primary importance, coupled with technique and style.
He was one of the leading Expressionist painters of the time and
was one of the founding members of the Brucke. In his deeply
personal depictions, he focused on the places where he lived and
worked and his close friends and associates. This book,
accompanying a major exhibition at the Neue Galerie New York,
provides a visual survey of Kirchner's oeuvre and offers an
in-depth analysis of different aspects of the artist's output.
Essays by leading experts examine Kirchner's approach to colour,
his interest in the decorative arts, how electric light affected
his treatment of colour, the impact of Nietzsche on his work, and
how he was profoundly changed by World War I. This book includes
illustrations of nearly 40 paintings, 30 prints, as well as
drawings, sketchbooks, photographs, and decorative work.
In Sketching Women, three professional studio artists (Kozo Ueda,
PhD, Takahiro Okada, PhD and Minoru Hirota, PhD) join forces to
show you how to sketch the female figure through 55 step-by-step
drawing lessons. Each instructor walks you through their philosophy
for croquis sketching. Croquis sketches are quickly-rendered
drawings that capture the essentials of a subject's form and pose
with relatively few expressive lines. There are four levels of
sketching described in the book: 1-minute croquis: very rapid
gesture drawings that capture only the artist's impressions of the
form, and where the pencil stays in contact with the paper for
practically the entire session 2-minute croquis: another quick
sketch, but with more attention paid to the character and rhythm of
the lines and how they help to express the essence of the form
5-minute croquis: a more finished drawing where added tonal
variations suggest volume and anatomical details 10-minute croquis:
more of a finished drawing than true croquis, the longer session
allows the luxury of adding fine details such as the facial
expression, the character of the hands and clothing texture Learn
to sketch the following: Individual body parts (including faces)
and their bone structure and muscles Standing and sitting poses
Nudes and clothed figures Light and dark tonal variations Dynamic
poses Color drawings You'll quickly hone your sketching skills with
this life-drawing classroom-in-a-book. The expert advice and
observations, dozens of poses to study, as well as
easy-to-understand notes and tips make it easy to understand how
the skeleton, muscles and posture all come together to express the
uniquely female form.
The British painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992) is famed for his
idiosyncratic mode of depicting the human figure. Thirty years
after his death, his working methods remain underexplored. New
research on the Francis Bacon Studio Archive at Hugh Lane Gallery,
Dublin, sheds light on the genesis of his works, namely the
photographic source material he collected in his studios, on which
he consistently based his paintings. The book brings together the
artist's pictorial springboards for the first time, delineating and
interpreting recurring patterns and methods in his preparatory work
and adoption of photographic material. In addition, it correctly
locates 'chance' as a driving force in Bacon's working method and
qualifies the significance of photography for the painter.

"Magnificent! The best how-to manual ever published." - Kevin
Kelly, Cool Tools Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and
low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book
about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media
theory, movie criticism, and web design. In Reinventing Comics,
McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different
revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today.
Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form
itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest
principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a
character's facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust
rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his
inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand-in narrator, mixing
dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how
to master the human condition through word and image in a
brilliantly minimalistic way. Both comic book devotees and the
uninitiated will marvel at this journey into a
once-underappreciated art form.

Painting is one of the most rewarding ways of expressing yourself.
It sparks creativity, engages the imagination and relaxes you,
reducing stress levels and leaving you feeling mentally clear and
calm. Most people assume that the ability to paint is a skill you
either have or you don't, so although they would like to paint they
lack the confidence to do so. But painting can be readily learned
with the right teacher to guide you, and a clear approach and
encouraging voice are often all that's needed to get you on the
right track. That's where this book, Acrylics, comes in. Adrian
Burrows is an enthusiastic and accomplished artist and teacher who
explains the fundamentals of painting with acrylics in a helpful
and accessible manner. Adrian shows you what you need in terms of
tools and materials, and explains and illustrates all the basic
techniques. Ten step-by-step tutorials, covering a variety of
subjects, then put these techniques into action. Each tutorial is
broken down into stages, with clear instructions and photographs
for readers to follow, plus plenty of helpful tips and
troubleshooting advice. There are also special features on painting
trees, skies and figures.
In this classic text, James Elkins communicates the experience of
painting beyond the traditional vocabulary of art history. Alchemy
provides a strange language to explore what it is a painter really
does in the studio-the smells, the mess, the struggle to control
the uncontrollable, the special knowledge only painters hold of how
colors will mix, and how they will look. Written from the
perspective of a painter-turned-art historian, this anniversary
edition includes a new introduction and preface by Elkins in which
he further reflects on the experience of painting and its role in
the study of art today.
