The Colors of Photography aims to provide a deeper understanding of what color is in the field of photography. Until today, color photography has marked the "here and now," while black and white photographs have been linked to our image of history and have formed our collective memory. However, such general dichotomies start to crumble when considering the aesthetic, cultural, and political complexity of color in photography. With essays by Charlotte Cotton, Bettina Gockel, Tanya Sheehan, Blake Stimson, Kim Timby, Kelley Wilder, Deborah Willis. Photographic contributions by Hans Danuser and Raymond Meier.

This essential publication reintroduces the importance of learning to 'see by hand', to visualize large-scale design schemes and explain them through drawing, before using the digital tools that are so crucial to efficient and cost-effective building solutions. Combining traditional drawing techniques with those from CAD rendering, Drawing for Landscape Architecture guides practitioners from their very first impression of a site, through concept and schematic design and client presentation to construction and site drawings, concluding with two case studies that show the final result. Just as hand-drawing returns to design courses around the world, this welcome publication celebrates the best aspects of traditional techniques while incorporating them into today's digital design methods.
A prominent artist ventured behind locked doors to portray three
"forgotten" social classes: the elderly, people in mental
institutions, and the prison population. Alan E. Cober began his
career in the 1960s, when illustration took a turn toward a new
expressionism. Influenced by the works of Ben Shahn, George Grosz,
and Albrecht Durer, he believed that narrative art could inform
public attitudes toward political and social issues. Cober's aim as
a "visual journalist" was to effect change by graphically exposing
the realities of our times.
A companion volume to Lessons in Classical Drawing that breaks down the foundational skills and techniques of painting in a format that is accessible and manageable for all readers. With the same direct, easy-to-follow approach of Juliette Aristides's previous books, Lessons in Classical Painting presents aspiring artists with the fundamental skills and tools needed to master painting in the atelier style. With more than 15 years of experience in ateliers and as an art instructor, Aristides pairs personal examples and insights with theory, assignments and demonstrations for readers, discussions of technical issues and inspirational quotes. After taking a bird's eye look at painting as a whole, Aristides breaks down painting into big-picture topics like grisaille, temperature, colour and composition, demonstrating how these key subjects can be applied by all painters.

Since its founding in 1881, H. Schmincke & Co has been a premier producer of artists' paints. Artists such as Otto Dix, Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka relied on Schmincke colours, as do many of today's professional and amateur painters. This history of the company traces its development over four generations. It tells the story of H. Schmincke's modest beginnings at the end of the 19th century and their first product: oil paint. During an era of unprecedented artistic achievement in Europe and America, the company added watercolours and pastels to its acclaimed line of products. This book also takes readers through the struggles of the Jewish owners during the Third Reich, and how the family rebuilt the company after its buildings were destroyed in the Second World War. Since then, the company experienced a successful expansion during the post-war decades as well as a downturn caused by the collapsing economy and family issues. Now in its fourth generation of ownership, H. Schmincke is thriving amidst global challenges and opportunities. Beautifully illustrated with artistic and archival images, this is a unique look behind the scenes of a company that has been committed to excellence in manufacturing-and to a rich engagement with the art world-for nearly 150 years.
