The Theory of Composites (Paperback): Graeme W. Milton The Theory of Composites (Paperback)
Graeme W. Milton
R2,795 Discovery Miles 27 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Composites have been studied for more than 150 years, and interest in their properties has been growing. This classic volume provides the foundations for understanding a broad range of composite properties, including electrical, magnetic, electromagnetic, elastic and viscoelastic, piezoelectric, thermal, fluid flow through porous materials, thermoelectric, pyroelectric, magnetoelectric, and conduction in the presence of a magnetic field (Hall effect). Exact solutions of the PDEs in model geometries provide one avenue of understanding composites; other avenues include microstructure-independent exact relations satisfied by effective moduli, for which the general theory is reviewed; approximation formulae for effective moduli; and series expansions for the fields and effective moduli that are the basis of numerical methods for computing these fields and moduli. The range of properties that composites can exhibit can be explored either through the model geometries or through microstructure-independent bounds on the properties. These bounds are obtained through variational principles, analytic methods, and Hilbert space approaches. Most interesting is when the properties of the composite are unlike those of the constituent materials, and there has been an explosion of interest in such composites, now known as metamaterials. The Theory of Composites surveys these aspects, among others, and complements the new body of literature that has emerged since the book was written. It remains relevant today by providing historical background, a compendium of numerous results, and through elucidating many of the tools still used today in the analysis of composite properties. This book is intended for applied mathematicians, physicists, and electrical and mechanical engineers. It will also be of interest to graduate students.

Nonlinear H-Infinity Control, Hamiltonian Systems and Hamilton-Jacobi Equations (Hardcover): M. D. S. Aliyu Nonlinear H-Infinity Control, Hamiltonian Systems and Hamilton-Jacobi Equations (Hardcover)
M. D. S. Aliyu
R8,047 Discovery Miles 80 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A comprehensive overview of nonlinear H control theory for both continuous-time and discrete-time systems, Nonlinear H -Control, Hamiltonian Systems and Hamilton-Jacobi Equations covers topics as diverse as singular nonlinear H -control, nonlinear H -filtering, mixed H2/ H -nonlinear control and filtering, nonlinear H -almost-disturbance-decoupling, and algorithms for solving the ubiquitous Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equations. The link between the subject and analytical mechanics as well as the theory of partial differential equations is also elegantly summarized in a single chapter. Recent progress in developing computational schemes for solving the Hamilton-Jacobi equation (HJE) has facilitated the application of Hamilton-Jacobi theory in both mechanics and control. As there is currently no efficient systematic analytical or numerical approach for solving them, the biggest bottle-neck to the practical application of the nonlinear equivalent of the H -control theory has been the difficulty in solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs partial differential-equations (or inequalities). In light of this challenge, the author hopes to inspire continuing research and discussion on this topic via examples and simulations, as well as helpful notes and a rich bibliography. Nonlinear H -Control, Hamiltonian Systems and Hamilton-Jacobi Equations was written for practicing professionals, educators, researchers and graduate students in electrical, computer, mechanical, aeronautical, chemical, instrumentation, industrial and systems engineering, as well as applied mathematics, economics and management.

Introduction to the Calculus of Variations and Control with Modern Applications (Paperback): John A. Burns Introduction to the Calculus of Variations and Control with Modern Applications (Paperback)
John A. Burns
R1,959 Discovery Miles 19 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Introduction to the Calculus of Variations and Control with Modern Applications provides the fundamental background required to develop rigorous necessary conditions that are the starting points for theoretical and numerical approaches to modern variational calculus and control problems. The book also presents some classical sufficient conditions and discusses the importance of distinguishing between the necessary and sufficient conditions. In the first part of the text, the author develops the calculus of variations and provides complete proofs of the main results. He explains how the ideas behind the proofs are essential to the development of modern optimization and control theory. Focusing on optimal control problems, the second part shows how optimal control is a natural extension of the classical calculus of variations to more complex problems. By emphasizing the basic ideas and their mathematical development, this book gives you the foundation to use these mathematical tools to then tackle new problems. The text moves from simple to more complex problems, allowing you to see how the fundamental theory can be modified to address more difficult and advanced challenges. This approach helps you understand how to deal with future problems and applications in a realistic work environment.

Emmy Noether's Wonderful Theorem (Paperback, revised and updated edition): Dwight E. Neuenschwander Emmy Noether's Wonderful Theorem (Paperback, revised and updated edition)
Dwight E. Neuenschwander
R762 Discovery Miles 7 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"In the judgment of the most competent living mathematicians, Fraulein Noether was the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began."-Albert Einstein The year was 1915, and the young mathematician Emmy Noether had just settled into Gottingen University when Albert Einstein visited to lecture on his nearly finished general theory of relativity. Two leading mathematicians of the day, David Hilbert and Felix Klein, dug into the new theory with gusto, but had difficulty reconciling it with what was known about the conservation of energy. Knowing of her expertise in invariance theory, they requested Noether's help. To solve the problem, she developed a novel theorem, applicable across all of physics, which relates conservation laws to continuous symmetries-one of the most important pieces of mathematical reasoning ever developed. Noether's "first" and "second" theorem was published in 1918. The first theorem relates symmetries under global spacetime transformations to the conservation of energy and momentum, and symmetry under global gauge transformations to charge conservation. In continuum mechanics and field theories, these conservation laws are expressed as equations of continuity. The second theorem, an extension of the first, allows transformations with local gauge invariance, and the equations of continuity acquire the covariant derivative characteristic of coupled matter-field systems. General relativity, it turns out, exhibits local gauge invariance. Noether's theorem also laid the foundation for later generations to apply local gauge invariance to theories of elementary particle interactions. In Dwight E. Neuenschwander's new edition of Emmy Noether's Wonderful Theorem, readers will encounter an updated explanation of Noether's "first" theorem. The discussion of local gauge invariance has been expanded into a detailed presentation of the motivation, proof, and applications of the "second" theorem, including Noether's resolution of concerns about general relativity. Other refinements in the new edition include an enlarged biography of Emmy Noether's life and work, parallels drawn between the present approach and Noether's original 1918 paper, and a summary of the logic behind Noether's theorem.

General Pontryagin-Type Stochastic Maximum Principle and Backward Stochastic Evolution Equations in Infinite Dimensions... General Pontryagin-Type Stochastic Maximum Principle and Backward Stochastic Evolution Equations in Infinite Dimensions (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Qi Lu, Xu Zhang
R1,749 Discovery Miles 17 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The classical Pontryagin maximum principle (addressed to deterministic finite dimensional control systems) is one of the three milestones in modern control theory. The corresponding theory is by now well-developed in the deterministic infinite dimensional setting and for the stochastic differential equations. However, very little is known about the same problem but for controlled stochastic (infinite dimensional) evolution equations when the diffusion term contains the control variables and the control domains are allowed to be non-convex. Indeed, it is one of the longstanding unsolved problems in stochastic control theory to establish the Pontryagin type maximum principle for this kind of general control systems: this book aims to give a solution to this problem. This book will be useful for both beginners and experts who are interested in optimal control theory for stochastic evolution equations.

Chance and decision. Stochastic control in discrete time (Paperback): Jerzy Zabczyk Chance and decision. Stochastic control in discrete time (Paperback)
Jerzy Zabczyk
R515 Discovery Miles 5 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mathematical theory of discrete time decision processes, also known as stochastic control, is based on two major ideas: backward induction and conditioning. It has a large number of applications in almost all branches of the natural sciences. The aim of these notes is to give a self-contained introduction to this theory and its applications. Our intention was to give a global and mathematically precise picture of the subject and present well motivated examples. We cover systems with complete or partial information as well as with complete or partial observation. We have tried to present in a unified way several topics such as dynamic programming equations, stopping problems, stabilization, Kalman-Bucy filter, linear regulator, adaptive control and option pricing. The notes discuss a large variety of models rather than concentrate on general existence theorems.

Introduction to Optimization and Hadamard Semidifferential Calculus (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Michel Delfour Introduction to Optimization and Hadamard Semidifferential Calculus (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Michel Delfour
R2,896 Discovery Miles 28 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This second edition provides an enhanced exposition of the long-overlooked Hadamard semidifferential calculus, first introduced in the 1920s by mathematicians Jacques Hadamard and Maurice Rene Frechet. Hadamard semidifferential calculus is possibly the largest family of nondifferentiable functions that retains all the features of classical differential calculus, including the chain rule, making it a natural framework for initiating a large audience of undergraduates and non-mathematicians into the world of nondifferentiable optimization. Introduction to Optimization and Hadamard Semidifferential Calculus, Second Edition: builds upon its prior edition's foundations in Hadamard semidifferential calculus, showcasing new material linked to convex analysis and nonsmooth optimization; presents a modern treatment of optimization and Hadamard semidifferential calculus while remaining at a level that is accessible to undergraduate students; and challenges students with exercises related to problems in such fields as engineering, mechanics, medicine, physics, and economics and supplies answers in Appendix B.
