Few men are prominent chess players as well as esteemed chess
writers. James Mason, in his lifetime, had the reputation of being
both. This book chronicles Mason's early career in the United
States, providing many details on his writings and annotations for
The Spirit of the Times and The American Chess Journal, his
participation in the Cafe Europa and Cafe International
tournaments, his win in 1876's Fourth American Chess Congress, and
his matches against chess greats like George H. Mackenzie, Eugene
Delmar, Dion M. Martinez, Edward Alberoni, and Henry E. Bird.
Mason's efforts to establish an American Chess Association and to
arrange an international centennial congress in 1876 are also
explored. In addition to the general index, the work also includes
indexes of games, annotators, and openings.
Inspired by both Daniel Defoe's 'A Journal of the Plague Year'
(1722) and 'The King', an anthology of the witty and provocative
chess columns of the Dutch Grandmaster, Jan Hein Donner, Ray Keene
here collects his thoughts and writings on the year 2020 - both in
chess and the wider world. His reflections include the impact of
Covid-19 on the popularity of chess, the remarkable influence of
the Netflix series 'The Queen's Gambit', the growing army of
teenage Grandmasters, the online pivot of chess competition and the
emergence of chess entrepreneurs, such as World Champion Magnus
Carlsen and Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura.. Like Donner, Ray uses
chess as a metaphor for observations on art, culture and
civilisation.
The games of Mikhail Botvinnik, world chess champion from 1948 to
1963, have been studied by players around the world for decades.
But little has been written about Botvinnik himself. This book
explores his unusual dual career--as a highly regarded scientist as
well as the first truly professional chess player--as well as his
complex relations with Soviet leaders, including Josef Stalin, his
bitter rivalries, and his doomed effort to create the perfect
chess-playing computer program. The book has more than 85 games,
127 diagrams, twelve photographs, a chronology of his life and
career, a bibliography, an index of openings, an index of
opponents, and a general index.
This reference work continues a comprehensive series chronicling
men's chess competitions. Listed in this volume are the results of
chess competitions from all over the world-including individual and
team matches-from 1986 through 1990. Entries record location and,
when available, the group that sponsored the event. First and last
names of players are included whenever possible and are
standardized for easy reference. Compiled from contemporary sources
such as newspapers, periodicals, tournament records and match
books, this work contains 1,419 tournament crosstables and 194
match scores, and is indexed by events and by players.
One of the greatest chess legends of all time, Aron Nimzowitsch
(1886-1935), is best known for founding the Hypermodernism school
of chess, which emerged after World War I to challenge the chess
ideologies of traditional central European masters. This first
full-scale biography of Nimzowitsch chronicles his early life in
Denmark, his family and education, and his fascination with the
game that would become the focus of his life. Also included are
explorations of his tournament games and records, his dispute with
influential chess teacher Siegbert Tarrasch, and his role in the
development of Hypermodern Chess. With detailed accounts of nearly
450 games and the only narrative of Nimzowitsch from 1914 to 1924,
a period formerly cloaked in mystery, this volume offers the most
thorough profile available of one of chess's greatest innovators.
Throughout its hundred-year history, the game Jetan has influenced
many writers and game designers. Invented by author Edgar Rice
Burroughs for his 1922 novel The Chessmen of Mars, Jetan has been
played by enthusiastic fans and serious gamers alike. This
first-ever book on Jetan explores the game's rules in depth and
provides new interpretations based on up-to-date research. It
chronicles the game's history, explores tactics and variants and
provides a complete standard for notating games. Also included are
three annotated Jetan playthroughs and several practice exercises.
Over 80 diagrams and photographs are used as illustrations, and an
essay about Edgar Rice Burroughs' lifelong interest in sports and
games further contextualizes the game.

Over the past few years the great chess player Garry Kasparov has
written five best-selling books praising the contributions to chess
made by the previous world champions. The series is called ''My
Great Predecessors''. As a reaction to this wonderful series of
books, leading chess writer Tibor Karolyi has written this
imaginary sixth volume. In gently humorous - but chessically
serious - style, the author imagines Kasparov is annotating over 70
of his own lost games, and blaming all these defeats on the bad
influence of each of the previous world champions, providing
in-depth analysis to show how he was misled by them. The book also
serves as a highly instructive, practical chess book - to beat
Kasparov, the greatest player of all time, took some pretty special
chess, and readers will enjoy learning from this. It is astonishing
how the author has managed to find so many games that exhibit
uncanny similarities between Kasparov and his predecessors, which
makes the content of the book extremely plausible - as if Kasparov
himself were writing it. This is a brilliant and totally original
chess book that could only have been written by someone with great
knowledge of Kasparov and the past world champions.

tips for developing chess further and finally using computers for
analysis and preparation.
Chess world champion Mirko Czentovic is travelling on an ocean
liner to Buenos Aires. Dull-witted in all but chess, he entertains
himself on board by allowing others to challenge him in the game,
before beating each of them and taking their money. But there is
another passenger with a passion for chess: Dr B, previously driven
to insanity during Nazi imprisonment by the chess games in his
imagination. But in agreeing to take on Czentovic, what price will
Dr B ultimately pay? A moving portrait of one man's madness, The
Royal Game: a chess story is a searing examination of the power of
the mind and the evil it can do.
This book teaches basic tactical ideas such as the fork, pin, and
discovered attack, and introduces general ideas such as
elimination, immobilization and compulsion. A basic knowledge of
simple tactics will enable a novice to start winning games, by
giving checkmate or capturing material. As the player progresses,
his tactical arsenal will broaden, and he will start to play
sacrifices and combinations, and develop a deeper understanding of
the game. Players who fail to study tactics systematically tend to
suffer from tactical blind-spots that plague them throughout their
playing career, and thus they fail to realize their full potential.

GRANDMASTER AND ADVISOR TO NETFLIX'S THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT, NOW WITH A

time again: what makes a champion? Drawing on a wealth of revealing

Kasparov reveals the strategic ways of thinking that always give a
