The Politics of Australian Child Care - Philanthropy to Feminism and Beyond (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Deborah Brennan The Politics of Australian Child Care - Philanthropy to Feminism and Beyond (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Deborah Brennan
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book, now in a revised edition, is a political history of child care in Australia from the 1890s to the 1990s. Once provided by philanthropic groups and available only to those deemed underprivileged, child care has now become part of the mainstream political agenda. Deborah Brennan provides an in-depth analysis of policy developments in this significant area since the Commonwealth became involved in 1972. The revised edition provides a detailed analysis of the shifts in policy under Labor as well as an up-to-date account of developments under the Howard government since 1996.

We Don't Exactly Get the Welcome Wagon - The Experiences of Gay and Lesbian Adolescents in Child Welfare Systems... We Don't Exactly Get the Welcome Wagon - The Experiences of Gay and Lesbian Adolescents in Child Welfare Systems (Paperback, New)
Gerald P Mallon
R1,232 Discovery Miles 12 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on over twenty years of child welfare experience and extensive interviews with 54 gay and lesbian young people who lived in out-of-home-care child welfare settings in three North American cities -- Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto -- Gerald Mallon presents narratives of marginalized young people trying to find the "right fit." Mallon permits the voices of these young people to guide the research, allowing them to tell their own stories and to suggest what is important in their own words. Their experiences help the reader to begin to understand the discrepancies between the myths and misinformation about gay and lesbian adolescents and their realities in the out-of-home child welfare systems in which they live.

The first comprehensive examination of the experiences of gay and lesbian youths in the child welfare system, "We Don't Exactly Get the Welcome Wagon" makes solid recommendations to social work practitioners as well as to policy makers about how they can provide a competent practice for gay and lesbian adolescents, and offers a methods chapter which will be useful in classroom instruction.

Escape from Poverty - What Makes a Difference for Children? (Paperback, New ed): P.Lindsay Chase-Lansdale, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn Escape from Poverty - What Makes a Difference for Children? (Paperback, New ed)
P.Lindsay Chase-Lansdale, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn
R1,008 Discovery Miles 10 080 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The poverty rate for children in the United States exceeds that of all other Western, industrialised nations except Australia. Moreover, poverty among children has increased substantially since 1970, affecting more than one-fifth of US children. These persistent high rates require new ideas in both research and public policy. Escape from Poverty presents such ideas. Four modes of possible change are addressed: mothers' employment, child care, father involvement, and access to health care. It examines the implications of these new policy-driven changes for children. The editors have developed an interdisciplinary perspective, involving demographers, developmental psychologists, economists, health experts, historians, and sociologists - a framework essential for addressing the complexities inherent in the links between the lives of poor adults and children in our society.

Mothers and King Baby - Infant Survival and Welfare in an Imperial World: Australia 1880-1950 (Paperback, 1st ed. 1997):... Mothers and King Baby - Infant Survival and Welfare in an Imperial World: Australia 1880-1950 (Paperback, 1st ed. 1997)
Philippa Mein-Smith
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about infant mortality decline, the rise of the infant welfare movement, outcomes in terms of changing priorities in child health and what happened to mothers and babies. Infant welfare raised public awareness but did not contribute as powerfully to improved infant survival - and so longer life - as protagonists claimed. This work shows what it meant for reformers, babies and mothers when the call was 'population is power: the nation that has the babies has the future'.

Children in Poverty - Child Development and Public Policy (Paperback, Revised): Aletha C. Huston Children in Poverty - Child Development and Public Policy (Paperback, Revised)
Aletha C. Huston
R1,038 Discovery Miles 10 380 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The numbers of children living in poverty in the United States increased dramatically during the 1980s and remains high. Why are so many children growing up in poor families? What are the effects of poverty on children's physical, cognitive, social and emotional development? What role can public policy and policy research play in preventing or alleviating the damaging effects of poverty on children? This book examines these questions, focusing on the child, rather than on parents income or self-sufficiency. The contributors come from diverse fields - economics, sociology, public health, psychology, child development, and education affording depth and wide coverage of the topic, and displaying an even mix of research and applications. This book should appeal to policy makers, advocates and scholars; although the contributors use a data-driven approach, the text is accessible to a range of people interested in policy issues.

Model Mothers - Jewish Mothers and Maternity Provision in East London 1870-1939 (Hardcover): Lara V. Marks Model Mothers - Jewish Mothers and Maternity Provision in East London 1870-1939 (Hardcover)
Lara V. Marks
R1,756 Discovery Miles 17 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first scholarly study to focus on Jewish women's experience of childbirth and infant care. In late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Britain there was deep concern about the perceived physical and military deterioration of the nation, reflected in the diminishing birth rate, persistently high infant mortality, and the poor health of the working class, revealed by army recruitment. Many medical practitioners and politicians believed that Jewish mothers were `model mothers' whose exemplary care of their children offered a solution to these problems. Lara Marks assesses the extent to which the stereotype of Jewish mothers reflected the reality of their experience in East London between 1870 and 1939. Not only did they have to cope with extreme poverty, but as newly arrived immigrants had to deal with linguistic and cultural barriers, as well as the unfamiliarity of local medical facilities. Nevertheless, as Dr Marks shows, Jewish mothers and their infants had clearly indicated by the remarkably low rate of Jewish infant mortality, and she examines the reasons for this. Model Mothers makes important contributions to our knowledge of maternal and infant care in this period and to our understanding of the interactions between ethnicity and health-care.

The Psychology Of Adoption (Paperback, Reissue): David M. Brodzinsky, Marshall D. Schechter The Psychology Of Adoption (Paperback, Reissue)
David M. Brodzinsky, Marshall D. Schechter
R1,750 Discovery Miles 17 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this volume the authors have brought together a group of leading researchers from various disciplines to explore the complex, interdisciplinary subject of adoption. David Brodzinsky has conducted one of the largest studies of adopted children in the US and Marshall Schechter has been involved with adoption related issues for over 40 years making them highly qualified to edit such an important volume. Our understanding of the problems faced by adopted children is still unclear, yet this book offers new insights into the issues for children and parents. It takes an integrated approach looking at theoretical, empirical, clinical and social issues and will be the definitive work on adoption.

The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction (Paperback, Revised): Linda Gordon The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction (Paperback, Revised)
Linda Gordon
R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In 1904, New York nuns brought forty Irish orphans to a remote Arizona mining camp, to be placed with Catholic families. The Catholic families were Mexican, as was the majority of the population. Soon the town's Anglos, furious at this "interracial" transgression, formed a vigilante squad that kidnapped the children and nearly lynched the nuns and the local priest. The Catholic Church sued to get its wards back, but all the courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, ruled in favor of the vigilantes. The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction tells this disturbing and dramatic tale to illuminate the creation of racial boundaries along the Mexican border. Clifton/Morenci, Arizona, was a "wild West" boomtown, where the mines and smelters pulled in thousands of Mexican immigrant workers. Racial walls hardened as the mines became big business and whiteness became a marker of superiority. These already volatile race and class relations produced passions that erupted in the "orphan incident." To the Anglos of Clifton/Morenci, placing a white child with a Mexican family was tantamount to child abuse, and they saw their kidnapping as a rescue. Women initiated both sides of this confrontation. Mexican women agreed to take in these orphans, both serving their church and asserting a maternal prerogative; Anglo women believed they had to "save" the orphans, and they organized a vigilante squad to do it. In retelling this nearly forgotten piece of American history, Linda Gordon brilliantly recreates and dissects the tangled intersection of family and racial values, in a gripping story that resonates with today's conflicts over the "best interests of the child."

No Visible Bruises (Paperback): Rachel Louise Snyder No Visible Bruises (Paperback)
Rachel Louise Snyder 1
R309 R293 Discovery Miles 2 930 Save R16 (5%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

AN ESQUIRE AND NEW YORK TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR

An award-winning journalist’s exploration of the domestic violence epidemic, and how to combat it.

An average of 137 women are killed by familial violence across the globe every day. In the UK alone, two women die each week at the hands of their partners, and in the US domestic violence homicides have risen by 32 percent since 2017. The WHO deems it a ‘global epidemic’. Yet public understanding of this urgent problem remains catastrophically low.

Journalist Rachel Louise Snyder was no exception. Despite years of experience reporting on international conflicts, when it came to violence in the domestic sphere, she believed all the common assumptions: that it was a fate for the unlucky few, a matter of bad choices and cruel environments. That if things were dire enough, victims would leave. That violence inside the home was private. And, perhaps most of all, that unless you stand at the receiving end of a punch, it has nothing to do with you.

All this changed when Snyder began talking to the victims and perpetrators whose stories she tells in this book. Fearlessly reporting from the front lines of the epidemic, in No Visible Bruises she interviews men who have murdered their families, women who have nearly been murdered, and people who have grown up besieged by familial aggression, painting a vivid and nuanced picture of its reality. She talks to experts in violence prevention and law enforcement, revealing how domestic abuse has its roots in our education, economic, health, and justice systems, and how by tackling these origins we can render it preventable.

Learning from Baby P - The politics of blame, fear and denial (Paperback): Sharon Shoesmith Learning from Baby P - The politics of blame, fear and denial (Paperback)
Sharon Shoesmith
R724 Discovery Miles 7 240 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Sharon Shoesmith was Director of Children's Services for Haringey in 2007 at the time of the death of Peter Connelly, also known as 'Baby P'. In Learning from Baby P, she carries out a dispassionate analysis of the events which followed Peter Connelly's death, documenting the responses of the media, politicians and the public. She explores the psychological and emotional responses we share when faced with such horrifying cases of familial child homicide, and how a climate of fear and blame which follows such tragedies can lead to negative consequences for other children at risk of harm, and for the social workers striving to protect them. Learning from Baby P is a thought-provoking book which aims to deepen understanding and shed light on the difficult relationship between politics, the media and child protection.

Contemporary Family Justice - Policy and Practice in Complex Child Protection Decisions (Paperback): Kim Holt Contemporary Family Justice - Policy and Practice in Complex Child Protection Decisions (Paperback)
Kim Holt; Foreword by Sir James Munby
R742 Discovery Miles 7 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Demonstrating how the law and statutory guidance applies in practice, this book is a critical account of current family justice policy and practice. It draws on recent legislation, case law and research findings to provide clear, accessible information and advice on how to make the difficult decisions in pre-proceedings child care practice work. With reference to child protection legislation and practice frameworks, this book highlights the importance of undertaking informed and effective assessments based on the best outcome for the child. The book acknowledges the constraints facing practitioners, such as working under considerable pressure within tight time frames and focuses on the issues which commonly present as challenges for practice, such as neglect, child sexual exploitation and pre-birth assessments. This is essential reading for students and practitioners in social work and law, as well as policy-makers and other professionals concerned with the current state of child welfare.

Building the Invisible Orphanage - A Prehistory of the American Welfare System (Paperback, New edition): Matthew A. Crenson Building the Invisible Orphanage - A Prehistory of the American Welfare System (Paperback, New edition)
Matthew A. Crenson
R1,042 Discovery Miles 10 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In 1996, America abolished its long-standing welfare system in favor of a new and largely untried public assistance program. Welfare as we knew it arose in turn from a previous generation's rejection of an even earlier system of aid. That generation introduced welfare in order to eliminate orphanages.

This book examines the connection between the decline of the orphanage and the rise of welfare. Matthew Crenson argues that the prehistory of the welfare system was played out not on the stage of national politics or class conflict but in the micropolitics of institutional management. New arrangements for child welfare policy emerged gradually as superintendents, visiting agents, and charity officials responded to the difficulties that they encountered in running orphanages or creating systems that served as alternatives to institutional care.

Crenson also follows the decades-long debate about the relative merits of family care or institutional care for dependent children. Leaving poor children at home with their mothers emerged as the most generally acceptable alternative to the orphanage, along with an ambitious new conception of social reform. Instead of sheltering vulnerable children in institutions designed to transform them into virtuous citizens, the reformers of the Progressive era tried to integrate poor children into the larger society, while protecting them from its perils.

Gerald Mallon, Peg McCartt Hess
R2,360 Discovery Miles 23 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA), which became law in 1997, elicited a major shift in federal policy and thinking toward child welfare, emphasizing children's safety, permanency, and well-being over preserving biological ties at all costs. The first edition of this volume mapped the field of child welfare after ASFA's passage, detailing the practices, policies, programs, and research affected by the legislation's new attitude toward care. This second edition highlights the continuously changing child welfare climate in the U.S., including content on the Fostering Connections Act of 2008. The authors have updated the text throughout, drawing from real-world case examples and data obtained from the national Child and Family Services Reviews and emerging empirically based practices. They have also added chapters addressing child welfare workforce issues, supervision, and research and evaluation. The volume is divided into four sections -- child and adolescent well-being, child and adolescent safety, permanency for children and adolescents, and systemic issues within services, policies, and programs.Recognized scholars, practitioners, and policy makers discuss meaningful engagement with families, particularly Latino families; health care for children and youth, including mental health care; effective practices with LGBT youth and their families; placement stability; foster parent recruitment and retention; and the challenges of working with immigrant children, youth, and families.

In this groundbreaking look at the history and politics of the US child welfare system, When the Welfare People Come exposes the system in its totality, from child protective investigation to foster care and mandated services, arguing that it constitutes a mechanism of control exerted over poor and working class parents and children. Applying the Marxist framework of social reproduction theory to the child welfare system, the author reveals the system's role in the regulation of family life under capitalism.

Romania's Abandoned Children - Deprivation, Brain Development, and the Struggle for Recovery (Hardcover): Charles A... Romania's Abandoned Children - Deprivation, Brain Development, and the Struggle for Recovery (Hardcover)
Charles A Nelson, Nathan A. Fox, Charles H Zeanah
R1,018 Discovery Miles 10 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The implications of early experience for children's brain development, behavior, and psychological functioning have long absorbed caregivers, researchers, and clinicians. The 1989 fall of Romania's Ceausescu regime left approximately 170,000 children in 700 overcrowded, impoverished institutions across Romania, and prompted the most comprehensive study to date on the effects of institutionalization on children's well-being. Romania's Abandoned Children, the authoritative account of this landmark study, documents the devastating toll paid by children who are deprived of responsive care, social interaction, stimulation, and psychological comfort. Launched in 2000, the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP) was a rigorously controlled investigation of foster care as an alternative to institutionalization. Researchers included 136 abandoned infants and toddlers in the study and randomly assigned half of them to foster care created specifically for the project. The other half stayed in Romanian institutions, where conditions remained substandard. Over a twelve-year span, both groups were assessed for physical growth, cognitive functioning, brain development, and social behavior. Data from a third group of children raised by their birth families were collected for comparison. The study found that the institutionalized children were severely impaired in IQ and manifested a variety of social and emotional disorders, as well as changes in brain development. However, the earlier an institutionalized child was placed into foster care, the better the recovery. Combining scientific, historical, and personal narratives in a gripping, often heartbreaking, account, Romania's Abandoned Children highlights the urgency of efforts to help the millions of parentless children living in institutions throughout the world.

Taming Childhood? - A Critical Perspective on Policy, Practice and Parenting (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Rob Creasy, Fiona Corby Taming Childhood? - A Critical Perspective on Policy, Practice and Parenting (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Rob Creasy, Fiona Corby
R1,440 Discovery Miles 14 400 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book explores the links between recent reports of increasing levels of unhappiness and mental health problems amongst children and young people, and changes within childhood which restrict and reduce opportunities for children to develop and maintain resilience. Although in academic terms children may be viewed as beings, Creasy and Corby posit that there is much to suggest that for parents, practitioners and policy-makers, children are primarily seen as becomings. The book argues that viewing children as becomings, together with the idea that childhood is fraught with danger, contributes to practices and policies which can be seen as making childhood tame. This taming of childhood leads to an impoverished childhood that does not provide the space that children need to grow and develop. Furthermore, Taming Childhood? challenges the idea that young adults are 'snowflakes', unable to cope with everyday pressures. Students and scholars across a range of social science disciplines will find this book of interest.

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow 1
R301 Discovery Miles 3 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An updated edition of The Shed That Fed A Million Children first published in 2015. The original book tells the incredible story of how Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, a quiet, unassuming fish farmer from Argyll, Scotland, became the international CEO of a global school-feeding charity. At that time, Mary's Meals was feeding a million children every school day in some of the poorest countries of the world. Fast forward six years and that figure has now doubled to more than 2 million children who now receive Mary's Meals daily in their place of education. In this edition, which features an additional chapter as well as a new preface and epilogue, Magnus brings the story right up-to-date, recounting how the continued growth of the international movement has been made possible, thanks to a global legion of staff, volunteers and supporters. Their unwavering commitment, dedication and continued 'little acts of love' have created an organisation that now holds the key to eradicating child hunger altogether. This humble, heart-warming yet powerful story has never been more relevant in our society of plenty and privilege. It will open your eyes to the extraordinary impact that Mary's Meals makes in the lives of the children it serves - for them, food changes the story. Speaking Volumes Christian Book of the Year 2016.
