Accommodation and Acceptance - An Exploration in Interfaith Relations (Paperback): Ambrose Mong Accommodation and Acceptance - An Exploration in Interfaith Relations (Paperback)
Ambrose Mong
R1,021 Discovery Miles 10 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As Hans Kung said, "No peace among the nations without peace among the religions. No peace among the religions without dialogue between the religions. No dialogue between the religions without investigation of the foundations of the religions." Accommodation and Acceptance is a crucial work in both promoting interreligious dialogue and exploring the turbulent history of Christian faith and identity in Asia down the years. From the reaction to missions, often inextricably linked with the practice of colonialism, to the rise of religious pluralism, Ambrose Mong examines the relationships between the leading faiths of Asia up to the present day. Whether practicing pluralism or exclusivism, the history of Christianity in Asia is long and fascinating. Ambrose Mong delves into the biography of intercultural pioneers like Matteo Ricci and Timothy Richard to understand better the theology - as well as the pragmatism - behind cultural accommodation, and the necessary mutability of an eternal church.

Religion and the Specter of the West - Sikhism, India, Postcoloniality, and the Politics of Translation (Hardcover): Arvind-pal... Religion and the Specter of the West - Sikhism, India, Postcoloniality, and the Politics of Translation (Hardcover)
Arvind-pal S. Mandair
R3,340 Discovery Miles 33 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Arguing that intellectual movements, such as deconstruction, postsecular theory, and political theology, have different implications for cultures and societies that live with the debilitating effects of past imperialisms, Arvind Mandair unsettles the politics of knowledge construction in which the category of "religion" continues to be central. Through a case study of Sikhism, he launches an extended critique of religion as a cultural universal. At the same time, he presents a portrait of how certain aspects of Sikh tradition were reinvented as "religion" during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

India's imperial elite subtly recast Sikh tradition as a sui generis religion, which robbed its teachings of their political force. In turn, Sikhs began to define themselves as a "nation" and a "world religion" that was separate from, but parallel to, the rise of the Indian state and global Hinduism. Rather than investigate these processes in isolation from Europe, Mandair shifts the focus closer to the political history of ideas, thereby recovering part of Europe's repressed colonial memory.

Mandair rethinks the intersection of religion and the secular in discourses such as history of religions, postcolonial theory, and recent continental philosophy. Though seemingly unconnected, these discourses are shown to be linked to a philosophy of "generalized translation" that emerged as a key conceptual matrix in the colonial encounter between India and the West. In this riveting study, Mandair demonstrates how this philosophy of translation continues to influence the repetitions of religion and identity politics in the lives of South Asians, and the way the academy, state, and media have analyzed such phenomena.

Roots of Wisdom, Branches of Devotion - Plant Life in South Asian Traditions (Hardcover): Fabrizio M Ferrari, Thomas Dahnhardt Roots of Wisdom, Branches of Devotion - Plant Life in South Asian Traditions (Hardcover)
Fabrizio M Ferrari, Thomas Dahnhardt
R2,052 R1,940 Discovery Miles 19 400 Save R112 (5%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Plant life has figured prominently in Indian culture. Archaeobotanical findings and Vedic texts confirm that plants have been central not only as a commodity (sources of food; materia medica; sacrificial matter; etc.) but also as powerful and enduring symbols. Roots of Wisdom, Branches of Devotion. Plant Life in South Asian Traditions explores how herbs, trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables have been studied, classified, represented and discussed in a variety of Indian traditions such as Vedism, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, indigenous cultures and Islam. Moving from an analysis of the sentience of plants in early Indian philosophies and scientific literature, the various chapters, divided in four thematic sections, explore Indian flora within devotional and mystic literature (bhakti and Sufism), mythological, ritual and sacrificial culture, folklore, medicine, perfumery, botany, floriculture and agriculture. Arboreal and floral motifs are also discussed as an expression of Indian aesthetics since early coinage to figurative arts and literary figures. Finally, the volume reflects current discourses on environmentalism and ecology as well as on the place of indigenous flora as part of an ancient yet still very much alive sacred geography.

The Viking-Age Rune-Stones - Custom and Commemoration in Early Medieval Scandinavia (Paperback, Revised): Birgit Sawyer The Viking-Age Rune-Stones - Custom and Commemoration in Early Medieval Scandinavia (Paperback, Revised)
Birgit Sawyer
R2,575 Discovery Miles 25 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first historical study of the whole body of late Viking runic inscription stones in Scandinavia. Manufacturing Religion - The Discourse on Sui Generis Religion and the Politics of Nostalgia (Paperback): Russell T. McCutcheon Manufacturing Religion - The Discourse on Sui Generis Religion and the Politics of Nostalgia (Paperback)
Russell T. McCutcheon
R1,346 Discovery Miles 13 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This provocative book offers a powerful critique of traditional religion scholarship, and particularlythe oft-repeated bromide that "religion" is a sui generis phenomenon. McCutcheon skillfully analyses the ideological basis for and service of this claim, demonstrating that it has been used to render the field's object of study ahistorical, apolitical, fetishised, and sacrosanct. He considers a range of sites in the modern study of religion and uncovers at each point sui generis religion serving as a protective strategy that ultimately authorises and mormativises a socio-political program. And on a larger scale, he contends, the study of religion as a historical category participates in a larger system of political domination and economic and cultural imperialism.

With Reverence for the Word - Medieval Scriptural Exegesis in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (Hardcover): Jane Dammen... With Reverence for the Word - Medieval Scriptural Exegesis in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (Hardcover)
Jane Dammen McAuliffe, Barry D. Walfish, Joseph W. Goering
R2,514 Discovery Miles 25 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume represents the first trilateral exploration of medieval scriptural interpretation. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are often characterized as religio-cultural siblings, traditions whose origins can be traced to the same geographical region and whose systems of belief and institutional structures share much in common. A particularly important point of commonality is the emphasis that each of these traditions places upon the notion of divine revelation, especially as codified in the text. During the medieval period the three exegetical traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam produced a vast literature, one of great diversity but also one of numerous cross-cultural similarities. The three sections of this book, each of which begins with an introduction to one of these exegetical traditions, explore this rich heritage of biblical and qur'anic interpretation.

The Ritual Animal - Imitation and Cohesion in the Evolution of Social Complexity (Hardcover): Harvey Whitehouse The Ritual Animal - Imitation and Cohesion in the Evolution of Social Complexity (Hardcover)
Harvey Whitehouse
R899 Discovery Miles 8 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A radical exploration of how rituals have influenced history over thousands of years. From infancy, we copy those around us in order to be like others, to be one with the tribe. Other primates will copy behaviour that leads to transparent benefits, such as access to food, but only humans promiscuously copy actions that have no obvious instrumental purpose. The copying of causally opaque behaviour (rituals) has allowed cultural groups to proliferate over time and space. The frequency and emotional intensity of ritual performances constrains the scale and structure of cultural groups. Rare, traumatic rituals (e.g. painful initiations) produce very strong social cohesion in small, relational groups such as military battalions or local cults whereas daily and weekly rituals (e.g. collective praying in mosques, churches, and synagogues) produce diffuse cohesion in indefinitely expandable communities. This pioneering study presents a theory of how these two 'ritual modes' have influenced the course of human history over many thousands of years and continue to shape the groups we live in today. The resulting programme of research offers a radically new paradigm for the social sciences, one that bridges across disciplinary silos, samples the full diversity of the world's populations, and plumbs our richest sources of information about cultural systems, past and present. In doing so, leading anthropologist Harvey Whitehouse shows how we can modify the way we tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our day, from violent extremism to global heating. All the problems humanity creates are ultimately problems of cooperation. Solving these problems will require social glue. Whitehouse suggests various practical ways in which our growing knowledge about the role of ritual in group bonding can help us achieve a more peaceful and prosperous future, not only for ourselves but for all species who share the planet with us.

Self and Self-Transformations in the History of Religions (Paperback): David Shulman, Guy G. Stroumsa Self and Self-Transformations in the History of Religions (Paperback)
David Shulman, Guy G. Stroumsa
R2,070 Discovery Miles 20 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together scholars of a variety of the world's major civilizations to focus on the universal theme of inner transformation. The idea of the "self" is a cultural formation like any other, and models and conceptions of the inner world of the person vary widely from one civilization to another. Nonetheless, all the world's great religions insist on the need to transform this inner world, however it is understood, in highly expressive and specific ways. Such transformations, often ritually enacted, reveal the primary intuitions, drives, and conflicts active within the culture. The individual essays - by such distinguished scholars as Wai-yee Li, Janet Gyatso, Wendy Doniger, Christiano Grottanelli, Charles Malamoud, Margalit Finkelberg, and Moshe Idel - study dramatic examples of these processes in a wide range of cultures, including China, India, Tibet, Greece and Rome, Late Antiquity, Islam, Judaism, and medieval and early-modern Christian Europe.

Veli-Matti Karkkainen
R938 R806 Discovery Miles 8 060 Save R132 (14%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Early in the nineteenth century Ernst Troeltsch, the great German liberal thinker, published the influential essay "The Place of Christianity Among the World Religions." The question of the relation of Christianity to other religions is every bit as relevant as and perhaps even more urgent today than it was then. Beginning with a consideration of the biblical perspective, Veli-Matti K?rkk?inen surveys the variety of diverse answers proposed by teachers of the church down through the ages. His reviews include the writings of Justin Martyr, Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria, as well as those of Augustine, Luther, Calvin, and a broad selection of later Protestant and Catholic thinkers. He completes the historical section with an astute look at the radical challenges of Enlightenment and classical liberalism and the emergence of the fulfillment theory of religions. The bulk of K?rkk?inen's work provides a detailed and comprehensive survey of major confessional movements and theologians' opinions on the contemporary scene. K?rkk?inen provides succinct and trenchant descriptions of a wide diversity of theologians, including Karl Barth, Hendrik Kraemer, Paul Althaus, Karl Rahner, Hans K?ng, Jacques Dupuis, Gavin D'Costa, Paul Tillich, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Lesslie Newbigin and M. M. Thomas, as well as Sir Norman Anderson, Clark Pinnock, Amos Yong, John Hick, Stanley Samartha, Raimundo Panikkar, Paul Knitter, Millard Erickson, Harold Netland and Vinoth Ramachandra. An Introduction to the Theology of Religions is an indispensable guide for anyone seeking to grasp and work their way through the full range of alternatives offered in answer to the question, What is the relation of Christianity to other religions?

Reading J. Z. Smith - Interviews & Essay (Hardcover): Willi Braun, Russell T. McCutcheon Reading J. Z. Smith - Interviews & Essay (Hardcover)
Willi Braun, Russell T. McCutcheon
R751 Discovery Miles 7 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the course of a career of more than forty years, Jonathan Z. Smith was among the most important voices of critical reflection within the academic study of religion, distinguishing himself as perhaps the most influential theorist of religion of the last half century. Among his significant body of work are essays and lectures on teaching and the essential role of academic scholarship on religion in matters of education and public policy. The interviews and essay published here display something of the dynamic, thinking-on-his feet liveliness that Smith brought to questions about the study of religion, his theoretical preferences, and his methods of teaching. With refreshing candidness and clarity, Reading J.Z. Smith offers an often provocative introduction to discussions on issues that still dominate the complex and continually changing critical conversations in the academic study of religion.

Feminist Poetics of the Sacred - Creative Suspicions (Paperback): Frances Devlin-Glass, Lyn McCredden Feminist Poetics of the Sacred - Creative Suspicions (Paperback)
Frances Devlin-Glass, Lyn McCredden
R2,397 Discovery Miles 23 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an interdisciplinary and multicultural study of ancient and contemporary texts that encode women's spirituality. The contributors, using modern critical methods such as feminist theory, postculturalism, and the new historicisms, examine how the ideas in these texts are being reworked in different religious traditions. The volume encompasses both contemporary and historical contexts, tracing the roles, actions, writings, and beliefs of women in pre-Christian, Christian, Islamic, indigenous, and neo-pagan contexts. The book builds on three decades of feminist research into such areas as goddess worship, indigenous spiritualities, eco-feminism, biblical hermeneutics, Christian and Islamic mysticism, subversive poetics, and mythological systems inside and outside the mainstream.

Religious Fundamentalisms and the Human Rights of Women (Paperback, 1st Paperback Ed): C. Howland Religious Fundamentalisms and the Human Rights of Women (Paperback, 1st Paperback Ed)
C. Howland
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dialogue on the conflict between religious fundamentalism and women’s rights is often stymied by an “all or nothing” approach: fundamentalists claim absolute religious freedom, while some feminists dismiss religion entirely as patriarchal. Courtney Howland provides a forum for scholars, both religious and non-religious, to meet and seek common ground in their fight against fundamentalism. Through an examination of international human rights, national law, grass roots activism, and theology, this volume explores the acute problems that contemporary fundamentalist movements pose for women’s equality and liberty rights.

Longing For The End - A History of Millennialism in Western Civilization (Paperback, Revised): Frederic J. Baumgartner Longing For The End - A History of Millennialism in Western Civilization (Paperback, Revised)
Frederic J. Baumgartner
R1,963 Discovery Miles 19 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Jonestown, Waco, and Heaven's Gate resonate in the contemporary mind in the same way that Masada or Mount Tabor resonated in the minds of others long past. The members of these movements believed that the end of the world was at hand and that they had to act through violence or suicide to ensure its occurrence. Frederic Baumgartner explores the long, often violent, history of millennialism as it has affected Western civilization. From ancient Zoroastrians to Concerned Christians of 1998, a belief in the imminent end of the world and the coming of the new age has motivated hundreds of sects and cults, some of which have burned out in an orgy of violence to become a permanent part of Western history.

Wild Religion - Tracking the Sacred in South Africa (Paperback): David Chidester Wild Religion - Tracking the Sacred in South Africa (Paperback)
David Chidester
R903 Discovery Miles 9 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Wild Religion" is a wild ride through recent South African history from the advent of democracy in 1994 to the euphoria of the football World Cup in 2010. In the context of South AfricaOCOs political journey and religious diversity, David Chidester explores African indigenous religious heritage with a difference. As the spiritual dimension of an African Renaissance, indigenous religion has been recovered in South Africa as a national resource. "Wild Religion" analyzes indigenous rituals of purification on Robben Island, rituals of healing and reconciliation at the new national shrine, Freedom Park, and rituals of animal sacrifice at the World Cup. Not always in the national interest, indigenous religion also appears in the wild religious creativity of prison gangs, the global spirituality of neo-shamans, the ceremonial display of Zulu virgins, the ancient Egyptian theosophy in South AfricaOCOs Parliament, and the new traditionalism of South AfricaOCOs President Jacob Zuma. Arguing that the sacred is produced through the religious work of intensive interpretation, formal ritualization, and intense contestation, Chidester develops innovative insights for understanding the meaning and power of religion in a changing society. For anyone interested in religion, "Wild Religion" uncovers surprising dynamics of sacred space, violence, fundamentalism, heritage, media, sex, sovereignty, and the political economy of the sacred.

"On the Backroad to Heaven" is a unique guidebook to the world of Old Order Anabaptist groups. Focusing on four Old Order communities--the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, and Brethren--Donald B. Kraybill and Carl Desportes Bowman provide a fascinating overview of their culture, growth, and distinctive way of life. Following a general introduction to Old Order culture, they show how each group uses a different strategy to create and sustain its identity. The Hutterites, for example, keep themselves geographically segregated from the larger society, whereas the Brethren interact more freely with it. The Amish and Mennonites are more alike in how they engage the outside world, adopting a complex but flexible strategy of compromise that produces an evolving canon of social and religious rules. This first comparative study sketches the differences as well as the common threads that bind these groups together.

Job is probably one of the best-known and most touching characters from the Bible. The Book of Job is the first great work of ancient literature to explore in depth the problem of undeserved suffering. Such is the enormous influence of this poetic masterpiece that it is now commonplace to refer to "the patience of Job." This volume combines the text of the Book of Job with essays that show why the trials of Job still resonate so powerfully today.

Murray Stein
R662 R591 Discovery Miles 5 910 Save R71 (11%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Gnosticism is far more than an ancient Christian and Jewish heresy. It arises in many religions as the belief in a radical dualism both in human beings and the cosmos: immateriality is perceived as good and matter as evil. In the modern age, Gnosticism is very much alive, focused on the belief that human beings are alienated from their true selves. Modern Gnosticism continues to espouse a radical dualism, but this can take a psychological, social and political, rather than a metaphysical form. Among the writers and thinkers of the last two centuries who can be labelled Gnostics are: Hegel, Blake, Goethe, Schelling, Emerson, Melville, Byron, Yeats, Hesse and Toynbee. This text is a collection of 16 essays illuminating Gnosticism in its relation to such issues as Jungian thought, the nature of evil, the place of the feminine, communism and fascism, existentialism, Christian scriptures, Kafka and Buddhism.
