Computer Architectures - Constructing the Common Ground (Paperback): Theodora Vardouli, Olga Touloumi Computer Architectures - Constructing the Common Ground (Paperback)
Theodora Vardouli, Olga Touloumi
R1,358 Discovery Miles 13 580 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Computer Architectures is a collection of multidisciplinary historical works unearthing sites, concepts, and concerns that catalyzed the cross-contamination of computers and architecture in the mid-20th century. Weaving together intellectual, social, cultural, and material histories, this book paints the landscape that brought computing into the imagination, production, and management of the built environment, whilst foregrounding the impact of architecture in shaping technological development. The book is organized into sections corresponding to the classic von Neumann diagram for computer architecture: program (control unit), storage (memory), input/output and computation (arithmetic/logic unit), each acting as a quasi-material category for parsing debates among architects, engineers, mathematicians, and technologists. Collectively, authors bring forth the striking homologies between a computer program and an architectural program, a wall and an interface, computer memory and storage architectures, structures of mathematics and structures of things. The collection initiates new histories of knowledge and technology production that turn an eye toward disciplinary fusions and their institutional and intellectual drives. Constructing the common ground between design and computing, this collection addresses audiences working at the nexus of design, technology, and society, including historians and practitioners of design and architecture, science and technology scholars, and media studies scholars.

Geometric Algebra Computing - in Engineering and Computer Science (Hardcover, Edition.): Eduardo Bayro Corrochano, Gerik... Geometric Algebra Computing - in Engineering and Computer Science (Hardcover, Edition.)
Eduardo Bayro Corrochano, Gerik Scheuermann
R5,062 Discovery Miles 50 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents new results on applications of geometric algebra. The time when researchers and engineers were starting to realize the potential of quaternions for - plications in electrical, mechanic, and control engineering passed a long time ago. Since the publication of Space-Time Algebra by David Hestenes (1966) and Clifford Algebra to Geometric Calculus: A Uni?ed Language for Mathematics and Physics by David Hestenes and Garret Sobczyk (1984), consistent progress in the app- cations of geometric algebra has taken place. Particularly due to the great dev- opments in computer technology and the Internet, researchers have proposed new ideas and algorithms to tackle a variety of problems in the areas of computer science and engineering using the powerful language of geometric algebra. In this process, pioneer groups started the conference series entitled "Applications of Geometric Algebra in Computer Science and Engineering" (AGACSE) in order to promote the research activity in the domain of the application of geometric algebra. The ?rst conference, AGACSE'1999, organized by Eduardo Bayro-Corrochano and Garret Sobczyk, took place in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Mexico, in July 1999. The contri- tions were published in Geometric Algebra with Applications in Science and En- neering, Birkhauser, 2001. The second conference, ACACSE'2001, was held in the Engineering Department of the Cambridge University on 9-13 July 2001 and was organizedbyLeoDorst,ChrisDoran, andJoanLasenby. Thebestconferencecont- butions appeared as a book entitled Applications of Geometric Algebra in Computer Science and Engineering, Birkhauser, 2002. The third conference, AGACSE'2008, took place in August 2008 in Grimma, Leipzig, Germany.

Recent Advances in Evolutionary Computation for Combinatorial Optimization (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Carlos Cotta, Jano van Hemert Recent Advances in Evolutionary Computation for Combinatorial Optimization (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Carlos Cotta, Jano van Hemert
R4,056 Discovery Miles 40 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Combinatorial optimisation is a ubiquitous discipline whose usefulness spans vast applications domains. The intrinsic complexity of most combinatorial optimisation problems makes classical methods unaffordable in many cases. To acquire practical solutions to these problems requires the use of metaheuristic approaches that trade completeness for pragmatic effectiveness. Such approaches are able to provide optimal or quasi-optimal solutions to a plethora of difficult combinatorial optimisation problems.

The application of metaheuristics to combinatorial optimisation is an active field in which new theoretical developments, new algorithmic models, and new application areas are continuously emerging. This volume presents recent advances in the area of metaheuristic combinatorial optimisation, with a special focus on evolutionary computation methods. Moreover, it addresses local search methods and hybrid approaches. In this sense, the book includes cutting-edge theoretical, methodological, algorithmic and applied developments in the field, from respected experts and with a sound perspective.

During the past decade, technology has become more pervasive, encroaching more and more on our lives. Computers, cell phones, and the internet have an enormous influence not only on how we function at work, but also on how we communicate and interact outside the office. Researchers have been documenting the effect that these types of technology have on individuals, families, and other social groups. Their work addresses questions that relate to how people use computers, cell phones, and the internet, how they integrate their use of new technology into daily routines, and how family function, social relationships, education, and socialization are changing as a result. This research is being conducted in a number of countries, by scientists from a variety of disciplines, who publish in very different places. The result is that it is difficult for researchers and students to get a current and coherent view of the research literature. This book brings together the leading researchers currently investigating the impact of information and communication technology outside of the workplace. Its goal is to develop a consolidated view of what we collectively know in this fast-changing area, to evaluate approaches to data collection and analysis, and to identify future directions for research. The book will appeal to professionals and students in social psychology, human-technology interaction, sociology, and communication.

Jorge Casillas, Francisco J. Martinez-Lopez
R4,273 Discovery Miles 42 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dr. Jay Liebowitz Orkand Endowed Chair in Management and Technology University of Maryland University College Graduate School of Management & Technology 3501 University Boulevard East Adelphi, Maryland 20783-8030 USA jliebowitz@umuc. edu When I first heard the general topic of this book, Marketing Intelligent Systems or what I'll refer to as Marketing Intelligence, it sounded quite intriguing. Certainly, the marketing field is laden with numeric and symbolic data, ripe for various types of mining-data, text, multimedia, and web mining. It's an open laboratory for applying numerous forms of intelligentsia-neural networks, data mining, expert systems, intelligent agents, genetic algorithms, support vector machines, hidden Markov models, fuzzy logic, hybrid intelligent systems, and other techniques. I always felt that the marketing and finance domains are wonderful application areas for intelligent systems, and this book demonstrates the synergy between marketing and intelligent systems, especially soft computing. Interactive advertising is a complementary field to marketing where intelligent systems can play a role. I had the pleasure of working on a summer faculty f- lowship with R/GA in New York City-they have been ranked as the top inter- tive advertising agency worldwide. I quickly learned that interactive advertising also takes advantage of data visualization and intelligent systems technologies to help inform the Chief Marketing Officer of various companies. Having improved ways to present information for strategic decision making through use of these technologies is a great benefit.
