More Than Meets the Eye - Special Effects and the Fantastic Transmedia Franchise (Hardcover): Bob Rehak More Than Meets the Eye - Special Effects and the Fantastic Transmedia Franchise (Hardcover)
Bob Rehak
R2,636 Discovery Miles 26 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A rare look at the role of special effects in creating fictional worlds and transmedia franchises From comic book universes crowded with soaring superheroes and shattering skyscrapers to cosmic empires set in far-off galaxies, today's fantasy blockbusters depend on visual effects. Bringing science fiction from the studio to your screen, through film, television, or video games, these special effects power our entertainment industry. More Than Meets the Eye delves into the world of fantastic media franchises to trace the ways in which special effects over the last 50 years have become central not just to transmedia storytelling but to worldbuilding, performance, and genre in contemporary blockbuster entertainment. More Than Meets the Eye maps the ways in which special effects build consistent storyworlds and transform genres while traveling from one media platform to the next. Examining high-profile franchises in which special effects have played a constitutive role such as Star Trek, Star Wars, The Matrix, and The Lord of the Rings, as well as more contemporary franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter, Bob Rehak analyzes the ways in which production practices developed alongside the cultural work of industry professionals. By studying social and cultural factors such as fan interaction, this book provides a context for understanding just how much multiplatform storytelling has come to define these megahit franchises. More Than Meets the Eye explores the larger history of how physical and optical effects in postwar Hollywood laid the foundation for modern transmedia franchises and argues that special effects are not simply an adjunct to blockbuster filmmaking, but central agents of an entire mode of production.

Decision Support Systems for Weed Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Guillermo R. Chantre, Jose L. Gonzalez-Andujar Decision Support Systems for Weed Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Guillermo R. Chantre, Jose L. Gonzalez-Andujar
R4,735 Discovery Miles 47 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Weed management Decision Support Systems (DSS) are increasingly important computer-based tools for modern agriculture. Nowadays, extensive agriculture has become highly dependent on external inputs and both economic costs, as well the negative environmental impact of agricultural activities, demands knowledge-based technology for the optimization and protection of non-renewable resources. In this context, weed management strategies should aim to maximize economic profit by preserving and enhancing agricultural systems. Although previous contributions focusing on weed biology and weed management provide valuable insight on many aspects of weed species ecology and practical guides for weed control, no attempts have been made to highlight the forthcoming importance of DSS in weed management. This book is a first attempt to integrate `concepts and practice' providing a novel guide to the state-of-art of DSS and the future prospects which hopefully would be of interest to higher-level students, academics and professionals in related areas.

Automatic Programming Applied to VLSI CAD Software: A Case Study (Hardcover, 1990 ed.): Dorothy E Setliff, Rob A. Rutenbar Automatic Programming Applied to VLSI CAD Software: A Case Study (Hardcover, 1990 ed.)
Dorothy E Setliff, Rob A. Rutenbar
R4,146 Discovery Miles 41 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book, and the research it describes, resulted from a simple observation we made sometime in 1986. Put simply, we noticed that many VLSI design tools looked "alike." That is, at least at the overall software architecture level, the algorithms and data structures required to solve problem X looked much like those required to solve problem X'. Unfortunately, this resemblance is often of little help in actually writing the software for problem X' given the software for problem X. In the VLSI CAD world, technology changes rapidly enough that design software must continually strive to keep up. And of course, VLSI design software, and engineering design software in general, is often exquisitely sensitive to some aspects of the domain (technology) in which it operates. Modest changes in functionality have an unfortunate tendency to require substantial (and time-consuming) internal software modifications. Now, observing that large engineering software systems are technology dependent is not particularly clever. However, we believe that our approach to xiv Preface dealing with this problem took an interesting new direction. We chose to investigate the extent to which automatic programming ideas cold be used to synthesize such software systems from high-level specifications. This book is one of the results of that effort."

Data Mining in Structural Dynamic Analysis - A Signal Processing Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Yun Lai Zhou, Magd... Data Mining in Structural Dynamic Analysis - A Signal Processing Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Yun Lai Zhou, Magd Abdel Wahab, Nuno M.M. Maia, Linya Liu, Eloi Figueiredo

Estimating Impact - A Handbook of Computational Methods and Models for Anticipating Economic, Social, Political and Security... Estimating Impact - A Handbook of Computational Methods and Models for Anticipating Economic, Social, Political and Security Effects in International Interventions (Hardcover, Edition.)
Alexander Kott, Gary Citrenbaum
R4,213 Discovery Miles 42 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Sociological theories of crime include: theories of strain blame crime on personal stressors; theories of social learning blame crime on its social rewards, and see crime more as an institution in conflict with other institutions rather than as in- vidual deviance; and theories of control look at crime as natural and rewarding, and explore the formation of institutions that control crime. Theorists of corruption generally agree that corruption is an expression of the Patron-Client relationship in which a person with access to resources trades resources with kin and members of the community in exchange for loyalty. Some approaches to modeling crime and corruption do not involve an explicit simulation: rule based systems; Bayesian networks; game theoretic approaches, often based on rational choice theory; and Neoclassical Econometrics, a rational choice-based approach. Simulation-based approaches take into account greater complexities of interacting parts of social phenomena. These include fuzzy cognitive maps and fuzzy rule sets that may incorporate feedback; and agent-based simulation, which can go a step farther by computing new social structures not previously identified in theory. The latter include cognitive agent models, in which agents learn how to perceive their en- ronment and act upon the perceptions of their individual experiences; and reactive agent simulation, which, while less capable than cognitive-agent simulation, is adequate for testing a policy's effects with existing societal structures. For example, NNL is a cognitive agent model based on the REPAST Simphony toolkit.

Mixed-Signal Layout Generation Concepts (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Chieh. Lin, Arthur H. M. van Roermund, Domine Leenaerts Mixed-Signal Layout Generation Concepts (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Chieh. Lin, Arthur H. M. van Roermund, Domine Leenaerts
R2,667 Discovery Miles 26 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Mixed-Signal Layout Generation Concepts covers important physical-design issues that exist in contemporary analog and mixed-signal design flows. Due to the increasing pressure on time-to-market, the steep increase in chip fabrication costs, and the increasing design complexity, it becomes even more challenging to produce a first-time right IC layout. The fundamental issues in creating a layout are placement and routing. Although these coupled problems have been investigated for many decades, no satisfactory automated solution has emerged yet. Fortunately, supported by modern computing power and results of new research that further improve computation efficiency, significant steps forward have been taken.
Mixed-Signal Layout Generation Concepts brings together many principles and techniques required to successfully develop and implement layout generation tools to accommodate many mixed-signal layout generation needs. Not only does it provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art concepts, it also illustrates many concepts with intuitive examples and pseudo code. Altogether, it facilitates creation of insight in a vast and complex area.
For those who are new to the area of mixed-signal layout generation, this book provides an excellent introduction to advanced topics in this area. A practicing EDA researcher or tool developer might find this book a useful reference that combines classical and new principles. In addition, this book relates theories to each other and to pragmatic implementations. Finally, the designer, or layout artist, interested to have a thorough understanding of fundamental concepts in mixed-signal layout generation, can take advantage of theself-contained chapters in this book.

Contemporary Logic Design (Paperback, 2nd edition): Randy Katz Contemporary Logic Design (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Randy Katz
R6,629 Discovery Miles 66 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the decade since the first edition of this book was published, the technologies of digital design have continued to evolve. The evolution has run along two related tracks: the underlying physical technology and the software tools that facilitate the application of new devices. The trends identified in the first edition have continued and promise to continue to do so. Programmable logic is virtually the norm for digital designers and the art of digital design now requires the software skills to deal with hardware description languages.

Hardware designers now spend the majority of their time dealing with software. Specifically, the tools needed to efficiently map digital designs onto the emerging programmable devices that are growing more sophisticated. They capture their design specifications in software with language appropriate for describing the parallelism of hardware; they use software tools to simulate their designs and then to synthesize it into the implementation technology of choice. Design time is radically reduced, as market pressures require products to be introduced quickly at the right price and performance.

Although the complexity of designs is necessitating ever more powerful abstractions, the fundamentals remain unchanged. The contemporary digital designer must have a much broader understanding of the discipline of computation, including both hardware and software. This broader perspective is present in this second edition.

CAD Principles for Architectural Design (Paperback): Peter Szalapaj CAD Principles for Architectural Design (Paperback)
Peter Szalapaj
R1,611 Discovery Miles 16 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

CAD Principles for Architectural Design is aimed at design students and practitioners interested in understanding how CAD is used in architectural practice. This book makes connections between the basic operations that are common to most CAD systems, and their use in practice on actual architectural design projects.

The ways in which CAD is integrated into the design processes of several leading edge practices is illustrated. Arising from these case studies is the emergence of a contemporary phenomenon of integrated CAD, in which all aspects of design schemes are brought together within computational frameworks that support the analysis of design proposals.
Szalapaj's view of CAD is one in which computers constitute a medium in which designers can express design ideas, rather than viewing computers as problem solving machines. For creative designers to successfully exploit CAD technology, CAD systems should reflect designers' intuitions as described by designers themselves
*Learn how to express your design ideas in CAD
*Understand the principles of CAD that are essential to all architects
*Turns theory into practice with an international range of contemporary architectural projects

Issues and Applications of Case-Based Reasoning to Design (Hardcover): Mary Lou Maher, Pearl Pu Issues and Applications of Case-Based Reasoning to Design (Hardcover)
Mary Lou Maher, Pearl Pu
R4,515 Discovery Miles 45 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Design is believed to be one of the most interesting and challenging problem-solving activities ever facing artificial intelligence (AI) researchers. Knowledge-based systems using rule-based and model-based reasoning techniques have been applied to build design automation and/or design decision support systems. Although such systems have met with some success, difficulties have been encountered in terms of formalizing such generalized design experiences as rules, logic, and domain models. Recently, researchers have been exploring the idea of using case-based reasoning (CBR) techniques to complement or replace other approaches to design support.
CBR can be considered as an alternative to paradigms such as rule-based and model-based reasoning. Rule-based expert systems capture knowledge in the form of if-then rules which are usually identified by a domain expert. Model-based reasoning aims at formulating knowledge in the form of principles to cover the various aspects of a problem domain. These principles, which are more general than if-then rules, comprise a model which an expert system may use to solve problems. Model-based reasoning (MBR) is sometimes called reasoning from first principles. Instead of generalizing knowledge into rules or models, CBR is an experience-based method. Thus, specific cases, corresponding to prior problem-solving experiences, comprise the main knowledge sources in a CBR system.
This volume includes a collection of chapters that describe specific projects in which case-based reasoning is the focus for the representation and reasoning in a particular design domain. The chapters provide a broad spectrum of applications and issues in applying and extending the concept of CBR to design. Each chapter provides its own introduction to CBR concepts and principles.
