Expressionist sculptor Bernhard Hoetger (1874-1949) was a key figure in the Art Nouveau movement in Germany. This volume focuses on the series of extremely influential sculptural works that Hoetger created for the plane tree grove of the Art Nouveau exhibition center Mathildenhohe in Darmstadt. A member of the Darmstadt artists' colony, Hoetger created more than forty sculptural works for the colony's final exhibition in 1914, including reliefs, animal sculptures, jug carriers, vases, and more. Exhibited across the entire garden area, the artworks drew on motifs not only from Christian art and the Western tradition, but also on Buddhism, ancient Egyptian poetry, and more--and the result was an outdoor realm that visitors experienced as almost sacred

Produced in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, this handsome volume explores the impact of Emily Dickinson's persona and poetry on contemporary art in America. Spurred by feminism and recent critical writings, many visual artists have turned to the poet's life and literary images for inspiration. They have engaged the issues raised by her poetry and the particular circumstances of her life and have attempted to transform her oblique language into tangible objects. Presenting the work of thirteen artists, as well as ten poets, this book showcases a wide range of responses to Dickinson's poetry. Three introductory essays set the stage for the artworks: Karen Sanchez-Eppler examines the visual dynamic in Dickinson's poetry; Polly Longsworth traces the ways in which the famous daguerreotype of Dickinson has conditioned our responses to her; and Christopher Benfey surveys her imprint on contemporary American poetry. Each of the artist entries is accompanied by a color illustration and the text of a related Dickinson poem. The artists include Will Barnet, Judy Chicago, Joseph Cornell, Robert Cumming, Lesley Dill, Mary Frank, Roni Horn, Carla Rae Johnson, Paul Katz, Barbara Morgan, Aife Murray, Barbara Penn, and Linda Schwalen. The poets whose work is represented are Hart Crane, Richard Wilbur, John Berryman, Adrienne Rich, Amy Clampitt, Sandra M. Le Wiener Werkstatte ("Ateliers viennois") est un mouvement creatif moderne majeur a bien des egards. Fondee en 1903 par Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser et Fritz Waerndorfer, cette alliance progressiste d'artistes et de designers chercha en particulier a remettre en question la societe industrielle par l'artisanat individuel, en s'efforcant de reunir les differentes composantes de la vie en une oeuvre unifiee et elegante. L'atelier, compose au depart de trois petites pieces, s'est rapidement etendu pour occuper un immeuble de trois etages, divise en departements consacres a l'orfevrerie, a la maroquinerie et a l'ebenisterie, mais aussi a la reliure et a la peinture. Les artistes s'y livraient a des experiences avec divers materiaux comme l'or, les pierres precieuses ou le papier mache, et appliquaient leurs motifs simples, souvent geometriques, a des domaines aussi varies que la ceramique, le textile, la typographie, la decoration d'interieur, le mobilier et la mode. A travers des commandes architecturales comme le Purkersdorf Sanatorium et le Palais Stoclet de Bruxelles, le groupe a pu realiser son ideal de "Gesamtkunstwerk", une oeuvre d'art totale dans laquelle chaque detail d'un environnement est concu comme partie integrante d'un tout coordonne. Bien que l'atelier n'ait vecu qu'une trentaine d'annees, il a joui d'un important succes commercial, a travers des boutiques installees a Karlsbad, Marienbad, Zurich, New York et Berlin. Il a aussi integre les creations de nombreux grands artistes de l'epoque, comme Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka et Egon Schiele. Aujourd'hui, ce mouvement des Ateliers viennois est reconnu pour son approche exhaustive de la pratique artistique et l'influence stylistique qu'il a exerce sur l'Art deco et le Bauhaus.
