What is an ordinary couple? Here, as six relationships are put under the microscope of the camera, the universal themes of sex, power, illness, perversion and hair loss are dramatically revealed. AN ENGLISH SQUEAK: The apparently bucolic artisto-existence of Peter and Flick is shadowed by an ailment on her part that makes physical intimacy impossible. SLITHER IN: "Ignorance is bliss, that to me is the beauty of a coma." B&B owners Gordon and Sheila fit their swinging lifestyle alongside looking after Sheila's bedridden sister. ALL OVER MY GLASSES: Michelle and Stephen are planning their wedding day. The first dance is R-Kelly's Bump and Grind and there's five boxes of Doritos for the reception. STRAIGHT AS A FLUTE: When not making curly sausage casseroles for the vicar, Beverley and Tony survey their neighbour's Satan-inspired garden and tell of life under the full gaze of the Lord. HAIRLESS: "My songs are like my children" says singer Fonte. "Yet they're also like my parents or a special uncle, who is particularly friendly at Christmas time. MORE THAN HAPPY: "You hear of people who have all sorts of sexual hang-ups.... and I'm one of them" Les's optimism has carried him and Ray through eight traumatic married years.

One of Jacques Rivette's most accessible films - a reflection on theatre and life, mixed with playful references to haunted-house thrillers and mysterious-mansion whodunnits. The plot concerns semi-professional actors Emily (Jane Birkin) and Charlotte (Geraldine Chaplin) and their small theatrical troupe who are brought to a famous playwright's (Jean-Pierre Kalfon) ornate, decaying mansion to perform a work-in-progress that seems to mirror some unexplained recent events in the author's own life. The play does not have a final act, the playwright tells his guests, because the story isn't over yet...

Live stage performance of Lou Reed's 1973 album, recorded at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York over five nights in 2007. When it was first released, 'Berlin', Reed's third solo outing, received a critical mauling, especially since it followed his earlier triumph, 'Transformer', with its hit single 'Walk On The Wild Side'. 'Berlin' is a tragic rock opera which deals with the drug-addled relationship of a doomed couple, and all its attendant depression and angst. The use of orchestral arrangements, horn sections and top session musicians alienated a large section of Reed's fanbase on release. However, over time the album has been re-evaluated, and is now regarded as one of Reed's best solo works, ranking 344 on 'Rolling Stone' magazine's 500 greatest albums of all-time. |
