Tom Hanks stars in this gangster drama set in the American Midwest during the 1930s. Twelve-year-old Michael Sullivan Jr is curious about what his father (Hanks) does for a living, and one night decides to hide in his car as he goes off to work. It soon transpires that the elder Sullivan is a hitman for the mob, and when young Michael witnesses a killing carried out by the gangster boss' son Connor (Daniel Craig), it starts off a chain of events which will mark Michael's life forever. Co-starring Paul Newman and Jude Law and directed by Sam Mendes.
French Canadian animated feature for children. Franklin shares many good times with his grandmother, and when she is taken ill he is determined to help her. He hears the story from his Aunt Lucy of a talisman that may help to cure his Granny's illness. However, the talisman is said to be in Turtle Lake, and it is a long and difficult journey to get there. Franklin will need help from his friends and his aunt - and must also contend with her headstrong goddaughter Samantha.
Triple bill of classic suspense thrillers from director Alfred Hitchcock. In 'Dial M for Murder' (1954), adapted from the stage play by Frederick Knott, former tennis pro Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) hatches a cunning plot to get rid of his socialite wife, Margot (Grace Kelly), when he discovers that she has been unfaithful. Wendice blackmails a corrupt former schoolmate into murdering her but the fellow bungles the job and Margot, having killed her would-be assailant in self-defence, then finds herself under suspicion of premeditated murder. In 'Strangers On a Train' (1951), based on Patricia Highsmith's novel, tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets Bruno Antony (Robert Walker) by chance in a train carriage. After some idle chat in which it transpires that each man has someone in their lives they would like to dispose of, Bruno proposes that he kills Guy's wife, in return for Guy murdering Bruno's father. Guy is appalled, but when his wife is murdered he realises that Bruno is intent on carrying out the 'deal', whether Guy wants to or not. In 'North By Northwest' (1959) advertising executive Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is lunching in a restaurant with his mother when he mistakenly answers a page for one George Kaplan. He soon finds himself on the run across the country, being pursued by enemies of the government who are convinced that he is a secret agent. He finds a friend in Eve Kendall (Eve Marie Saint), who helps conceal him during a perilous train journey, but soon discovers she is not all that she seems...
Seasonal family comedy. It's Christmas Eve and a huge blizzard has shut down Hoover International Airport. Among the stranded travellers, five unaccompanied minors are determined to max out their holiday by running wild inside and outside the airport. Without a parent in sight, the rampaging five outwit and outrun an uptight airport official and his gullible assistant. Joyriding on golf carts, plummeting through baggage chutes and canoeing down a snow bank, the kids turn Christmas at the airport into holiday pandemonium and along the way prove that the holidays aren't about where you are, but who you're with.
John Singleton's sequel to 'The Fast and the Furious' - which brought stardom to Vin Diesel. Diesel decided not to reprise his role but Paul Walker did. Former undercover cop Brian O'Conner (Walker) finds himself on the trail of another group of underground car enthusiasts in an attempt to redeem himself after his illegal escapades in the first movie. This time the location is Miami, where O'Connor has been making money out of street racing, and he is asked to bring down the drugs baron Carter Verone (Cole Hauser) in exchange for erasing his criminal record. Enlisting the help of an ex-con (Tyrese), O'Connor once again finds himself raging through the streets in stolen cars.
Amit Gupta directs this adaptation of Owen Sheers' debut novel starring Andrea Riseborough and Michael Sheen. It's 1944 and D-Day has failed. The United Kingdom is now under Nazi occupation. In the remote Welsh village of Olchon, farmer's wife Sarah Lewis (Riseborough) wakes up one morning to find her husband has mysteriously disappeared along with all the other men in the village. Then, as they wait for news, a German patrol arrives in their valley on an undisclosed mission. During the harsh winter that follows, the two groups are forced to pull together to survive the last days of the war. Cut off from the conflict around them, both the villagers and the Nazis find the lines between collaboration, duty, occupation and survival becoming less defined as time goes on...
Mike Vardy directs this big screen adaptation of the adventures of working class hero Joe Lampton (Kenneth Haigh). When Joe gets to know pharmaceutical tycoon Lord Ackerman (Harry Andrews) and his wife Alex (Nanette Newman), it results in an unexpected job offer. However, things aren't all plain sailing. While managing one of Ackerman's companies, Joe discovers that a former member of staff committed suicide for his part in producing a drug that proved harmful to women. Karras then calls in exorcist Father Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow), who confirms that Regan is possessed by the devil. William Peter Blatty's screenplay, based on his own novel inspired by actual events, won an Oscar, and the film was deemed so powerful that it was refused a BBFC certificate for fifteen years.
The extended edition (over 40 extra minutes) of the second film in Peter Jackson's epic big screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. The Fellowship of the Ring has now divided and Sam and Frodo are lost in the hills of Emyn Muil. They are also being followed by Gollum, a creature who promises to help them find the Mountain of Doom. Meanwhile Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli search for the hobbits Merry and Pippin in the Kingdom of Rohan, which is currently being attacked by Saruman's orc armies.
