Irish drama following two children, Kylie (Kelly O'Neill) and Dylan (Shane Curry), who run away from their troubled family homes on the outskirts of Dublin at Christmas time. The pair head for the centre of the city, where they glimpse human life in all its colourful diversity - but as darkness falls and the night wears on, an uglier side of the city emerges and the two must rely on their wits and their friendship to survive.

1940s comedy starring George Formby as a junior council employee who gets caught up in a town planning dispute. There should be unity and happiness in the small town of Tangleton - the war has just been won and plans can be made to rebuild the town for a better future. However, when the council tea boy, George Gribble (Formby), is sent to conduct a survey on how the townspeople feel about the council's proposed post-war 'improvements' he is surprised to discover just how poor and unhappy the ordinary people of Tangleton are. When the bigwigs on the council decide to bury the survey and proceed with the plans anyway, George teams up with an eccentric inventor, Sir Timothy Strawbridge (Robertson Hare), and his charming daughter, Jane (Elizabeth Allan), to give a voice to the town's poor and downtrodden.

He meets figures such as the Scientist (James Cady) and The Girl (Lindsay Pulsipher) along the way and is drawn into increasingly unusual events. What does the road hold in store for him?
Documentary about the career of Britpop band Oasis. Growing up on a Manchester council estate, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher started their journey as Oasis in 1991. They hit the peak of their fame in 1996 as they played their home ground of Manchester City and two consecutive nights at Knebworth. The band went on to become one of the most successful acts of the time, achieving seven number one albums and 24 top ten singles. Throughout their career the band found themselves the subject of many controversies including several legal battles over plagiarism as well as being outspoken about their views on politics and the media. After a very public split in 2009 the brothers went their separate ways leaving behind hours of footage put together in this documentary by director Mat Whitecross.

Triple bill of World War Two dramas. 'Everyman's War' (2009) is an American drama based on the personal wartime experiences of director Thad Smith's father. Don Smith (Cole Carson), a young sergeant in the 94th Infantry Division, finds himself unarmed and wounded on the frontline of the Battle of the Bulge, the largest and bloodiest battle involving American forces in the entire war. As the Allies advance through the snow-packed, densely-forested mountains of Ardennes, Don's sweetheart Dorine (Lauren Bair) waits at home in Oregon, desperate for news. 'Anonyma: The Downfall of Berlin' (2008) is a German drama set in Berlin in the final days of the war. The events of the film are based on the real diary of an anonymous woman who lived through the liberation of Berlin by Soviet troops in 1945, suffering shockingly brutal treatment by the city's captors. Living in the basement of her bombed-out apartment building with a handful of similarly destitute neighbours, the woman - known only as 'Anonyma' (Nina Foss) - endures repeated rape by Russian soldiers, and tries to wrestle a modicum of control over her destiny by using sex as a tool for survival, forging an uneasy sexual alliance with Russian leader Major Andrei Rybkin (Yevgeni Sidikhin). Brad Haynes directs the Australian drama 'Broken Sun' (2008). In 1944, a group of Japanese soldiers held in a P.O.W. camp deep in the Australian outback make an escape attempt. One young soldier, Masaru (Shingo Usami), ends up hiding in the remote hilltop farm of reclusive farmer Jack (Jai Koutrae), a World War One veteran who never recovered from the traumas he experienced as a soldier. Despite their differences and mutual suspicions, it soon becomes evident that the two men share the understanding that war is not simply a question of good versus evil but a complex set of rules by which each of them is duty-bound to abide. |
