Robin Williams shakes up 1965 Saigon as irreverent, non-conformist deejay Adrian Cronauer. Imported by the army for an early am radio show, Cronauer blasts the formerly staid, sanitized airwaves with a constant barrage of rapid-fire humour and the hippest tunes from back home. The G.I.'s love him - but the top brass is outraged. Riddled with side-splitting comic bombshells and studded with hot '60's hits, the film depicts Cronauer's raucous Saigon adventures and a world gone mad.
When a luxury liner is upturned by a tidal wave on New Year's Eve, ten survivors struggle to stay alive as they seek a means of escape. Kevin Costner plays New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, who remained unconvinced by the Warren Commission Report and launched his own investigation. This film was released on a wave of controversy and led to calls for Congress to re-open government records from the 1977 House Select Committee on the assassination. Stone weaves actual archive footage with historical reconstruction and conjecture to present his argument that Kennedy was killed by the CIA due to his desire to withdraw troops from Vietnam. The film gained several Oscar nominations and Stone won a Golden Globe award for Best Director.
War drama centered around the Iraq conflict. American soldier Adam Smith (Stephen Hogan) is taken hostage by a local extremist (Elyes Gabel) and held in a basement in Baghdad where he is tortured and made to film propaganda. As Adam counts down the hours till his execution, hoping one of his fellow fighters will come to his aid, the pair debate the ideologies of their warring factions.

This Academy Award nominated film is set in 1942 and was Terrence Malick's first film for twenty years. As US soldiers land on the island of Guadalcanal, hoping to capture it from the Japanese, the job of venturing into the jungle falls to the 'C for Charlie' company and the troops are faced by both the enemy and struggles within their own camp. The war takes a heavy toll upon the young soldiers, leading them on a path of disillusion and possibly death.
World War II prequel following the journey of a group of airborne infantry soldiers who are parachuted into occupied France in 1944. The Parachute Regimental Combat Team jumped into the south of France on the 15th of August 1944, landing behind enemy lines. The men's mission was to help clear a path for the main bulk of British and US soldiers advancing towards Berlin. However, landing in occupied territory is always a dangerous business and the soldiers soon find themselves fighting in close combat with German troops and teaming up with members of the French resistance who seek their help. New York cop Frank Keller (Al Pacino) is divorced, disenchanted and coming close to retirement. One woman who answers the ad is the beautiful and seductive Helen (Ellen Barkin). Frank falls heavily for her and against his better judgement begins an affair with the prime suspect.
A double bill of the classic 70's thrillers featuring an Oscar-winning Gene Hackman as 'Popeye' Doyle. In the first film Doyle and Buddy Russo (Roy Scheider) are tough New York cops attempting to crack a drug smuggling ring. They have a small candy store under surveillance, but Doyle is not happy when he receives the order to work with a pair of French federal agents on the case, one of whom he has a long-standing feud with. Hackman and director William Friedkin both earned Oscars for the film, which also took the award for Best Picture. Whilst in the sequel Doyle (Hackman) travels to Marseilles to track down Charnier (Fernando Rey), the leader of a drug smuggling ring whom he failed to capture in the first film. Kidnapped by dealers and pumped with heroin, Doyle has to kick his new-found habit before he can set about his revenge. |
