After setting out on their quest from the safety of Bag End, the band of travellers soon find themselves pitted against a range of strange and fearsome opponents, in addition to a small, slimy creature known simply as Gollum (Andy Serkis). In 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' (2013), while Gandalf heads south on his own, Bilbo, Thorin and the Dwarves enter the treacherous Mirkwood Forest on their way to the mountain. When they reach Lake-town Bilbo has to perform the role he was assigned at the start of the quest - to find a secret door that will lead him to the lair of Smaug the dragon (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch). In the final instalment, 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' (2014), Bilbo, Thorin and the other Dwarves have unintentionally released Smaug from the Lonely Mountain and endangered the residents of Lake-town. Bilbo has to make a difficult decision when Thorin puts his desire to find the royal jewel Arkenstone before his loyalty to his friends. Meanwhile, Gandalf discovers that the evil Sauron has returned, commanding a horde of Orcs to attack the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo and his friends must fight for their survival as five armies meet in battle. The rest of the cast includes Luke Evans, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly and Christopher Lee.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway star in Arthur Penn's lauded crime drama based on the true story of outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. In the 1930s, car thief Clyde (Beatty) teams up with Bonnie (Dunaway), the daughter of one of his victims, and together they become notorious bank robbers and Depression-era folk legends. They form a gang with Clyde's brother, Buck (Gene Hackman), Buck's wife, Blanche (Estelle Parsons), and gas station employee C.W. (Michael J. Pollard). When one of their robberies goes wrong, Clyde commits a murder and, with the police hot on their trail, the gangsters find themselves constantly on the run. The film received ten Oscar nominations, winning awards for Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actress for Parsons.

Pierce Brosnan makes his 007 debut, replacing Timothy Dalton as Britain's most celebrated secret agent. On his first post-Cold War mission, Bond is sent to blow up a Soviet chemical weapons factory with agent 006 (Sean Bean). Paul Verhoeven directs this classic sci-fi action feature starring Peter Weller. Set in the near future, Detroit's soaring crime rate is unsuccessfully policed by a corporation which plans to build a new city. When the new 'enforcement droid' proves unworkable, a murdered cop (Weller) is wired into a computer-controlled titanium body and set to the task at hand. Unimpressed, 'Robocop' seeks vengeance on all sides in this violent but often funny tale.

During World War Two in occupied France, a group of soldiers led by Kelly (Clint Eastwood) capture a German general. He reveals the location of a bank housing 14,000 bars of Nazi gold, which Kelly and his men set out to steal. The only problem is that the bank lies thirty miles behind enemy lines.

Academy Award-nominated documentary detailing the horrors of the Cambodian genocide which occurred under the Pol Pot dictatorship of the late-1970s. Using clay animation as a way of illustrating the undocumented experience of the common people, film-maker Rithy Panh tells the story of how he and his family were taken from their home in the city and forced to work in rural labour camps as part of the Khmer Rouge's social engineering policies. Not only did Panh witness first-hand a number of atrocities, including routine executions and widespread malnutrition, as a result, his own father starved himself to death as a way of protesting against the regime. The movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Robert Altman directs this radical adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel. Los Angeles detective Philip Marlowe (Elliott Gould) smells a rat when his friend Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton), whom he has just driven to Tijuana, is accused of murder. Convinced of Lennox's innocence, Marlowe follows a convoluted trail which leads him to his friend's mistress, Eileen Wade (Nina Van Pallandt), her alcoholic husband (Sterling Hayden) and hood Marty Augustine (Mark Rydell), to whom Lennox owed a substantial sum of money. Watch out for an early, unbilled appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger as one of Augustine's heavies.

Secret Service agent James Bond (Sean Connery) is sent to Jamaica to investigate the murder of one of his colleagues. It transpires that the island is being used as a base for the terrorist organisation SPECTRE, who, under the guidance of the despotic Dr No (Joseph Wiseman), have developed technology to divert rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. The first big-screen outing for 007 features original Bond Girl Ursula Andress emerging from the ocean in memorably revealing swimwear.

Sidney Lumet's 1973 crime drama Serpico remains one of the most influential cop movies - alongside Al Pacino's nuanced performance in a disturbing portrait of corruption and morality in the city that never sleeps.

Billy Wilder directs and produces this classic film noir starring Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling.
