Trilogy of war dramas from film-maker Ryan Little. In 'Saints and Soldiers' (2003), set in Belgium in December 1944, German troops open fire on unarmed American prisoners of war and provoke the historic Malmedy Massacre. Four soldiers trapped behind enemy lines discover a stranded RAF pilot who holds the key to German intelligence which could save thousands of American lives. The five men must battle through the bitter winter landscape, to smuggle their precious cargo from the clutches of the enemy. The prequel 'Saints and Soldiers: Airborne Creed' (2012) follows the journey of a group of airborne infantry soldiers who are parachuted into occupied France in 1944. The Parachute Regimental Combat Team jumped into the south of France on the 15th of August 1944, landing behind enemy lines. The men's mission was to help clear a path for the main bulk of British and US soldiers advancing towards Berlin. However, landing in occupied territory is always a dangerous business and the soldiers soon find themselves fighting in close combat with German troops and teaming up with members of the French resistance who seek their help. The third film 'Saints and Soldiers: The Void' (2014) is set during the final stages of the Second World War in Germany where a group of American troops must try to overcome racial barriers in order to defeat the Nazi's. Despite their reluctance, the predominantly white American crew are forced to turn to the expericenced African American SGT Jesse Owens (K. Danor Gerald). However, their faith is put to the test when war escalates and tension rises, with hundreds of lives at stake.
Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) first meet as students, when they share a disagreeable drive from Chicago to New York. Over the course of the next ten years they keep bumping into each other at various intervals, which generally seem to coincide with one of them having an emotional trauma. Will their platonic relationship turn into something more? Rob Reiner's hugely successful romantic comedy features Meg Ryan infamously faking an orgasm in a Manhattan deli.
Lasse Hallström co-writes and directs this Swedish comedy drama starring Anton Glanzelius. Based on the novel by Reidar Jonsson, the film follows troubled 12-year-old boy Ingemar (Glanzelius) who is sent to stay with his aunt and uncle in the country when his mother becomes ill. As he learns, with the help of the locals, to cope with her illness and his own propensity for mischief, he begins to compare himself to Laika, the Russian dog shot into space. The cast also includes Tomas von Brömssen, Anki Lidén and Kicki Rundgren.
Classic German fantasy in two parts from director Fritz Lang. Based upon the same Germanic myth that inspired Wagner's epic 'Ring' cycle of operas, the first part of the film, 'Siegfried', follows a man, Siegfried (Paul Richter), who believes that he has become invincible after slaying a dragon. Hubris is dangerous, however, and Siegfried may discover to his cost that he has one significant area of vulnerability. The second part, 'Kriemhild's Revenge', follows Princess Kriemheld (Margarete Schön), as she struggles to find a life beyond her love, Siegfried, amidst a kingdom torn apart by war and turmoil.
Classic downbeat British crime thriller, directed by Neil Jordan. George (Bob Hoskins) is a low-grade mob enforcer, recently released from prison after a stretch covering up for his boss, Mortwell (Michael Caine). Taking on a job as chauffeur to prickly call girl Simone (Cathy Tyson), George gradually begins to fall in love with her as he helps her look for her best friend Cathy (Kate Hardie). But when he eventually finds her, the naive George is dismayed to find that Cathy and Simone are lovers. Even worse, George has unwittingly become involved in a dangerous game that Simone and Cathy are playing against his old underworld boss, Mortwell.
Fritz Lang directs this silent epic starring Willy Fritsch and Gerda Maurus. A rocket that is on its way to the moon is commandeered by a group of spies with the intent of stealing the valuable store of gold that is kept on the satellite. The mission does not go to plan, however, as Helius and Friede (Fritsch and Maurus) find themselves stranded in a lunar maze unable to find their way home.
2004 Japanese comedy directed by Tetsuya Nakashima. Momoko Ryugasaki (Kyoko Fukada) is a bit of an oddball 17-year-old, who is fascinated by life in 18th century Versailles. She wears her version of what she thinks people wore there at that time and dreams of being able to get away from her boring life. Momoko's father (Hiroyuki Miyasako) makes his living selling counterfeit brand-name clothes, but when he gets on the wrong side of some bad people, he has to flee to the countryside. Momoko decides to escape from her boredom and to make some money by selling the last of her father's dodgy stock. In doing this, she meets up with biker chick, Ichigo (Anna Tsuchiya). So begins a strange friendship and a colourful series of adventures as the odd couple lurch into situations both comic and dangerous.
Wolfgang Petersen's screen adaptation of Sebastian Junger's semi-fictional book about the loss of a fishing vessel and its crew during one of the biggest storms for decades seen off the coast of the US. In the autumn of 1991 the Andrea Gail leaves the port of Gloucester, Massachusetts, never to be seen again. Heading out to the fishing waters of the Flemish Cap in search of swordfish, Captain Billy Tyne (George Clooney) and his crew soon find themselves overtaken by a massive storm, one which taxes their courage to the very limit. Focusing mainly on the adventures of the Andrea Gail, but also taking in the attempts of a rescue helicopter to rescue the crew of an ailing sailboat, Wolfgang Petersen's film uses impressive state-of-the-art effects to present a vivid account of the storm's awesome, destructive power.
Masaki Kobayashi's classic 'jidai-geki' samurai drama is set in 17th-century Japan. Tatsuya Nakadai stars as Hanshiro Tsugumo, an aging and disenfranchised samurai warrior who enters the house of a feudal lord asking to commit the act of hara-kiri (ritual suicide) on his land according to the ancient samurai code. On arrival, Hanshiro begins to tell his tragic life story, which is played out in flashback, culminating in Hanshiro's violent revenge upon those whose hypocrisy and authoritarianism robbed him and his family of life, love and happiness.
Classic 1950s sci-fi. Philanthropic Dr Reemer (Leo G. Carroll) has developed a new radioactive serum that can make animals grow at an enormous rate, and he plans to use it to help solve the world's food shortage. But when an accident in the lab leads to the serum infecting a tarantula, the situation suddenly becomes much more serious. Escaping into the desert, the deadly giant tarantula starts hunting human prey, and it's up to square-jawed doctor Matt Hastings (John Agar) and Reemer's assistant Stephanie (Mara Corday) to track it down and destroy it.
Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni star in this Italian drama. Set in 1938, at the time of the first meeting between Hitler and Mussolini, housewife Antonietta (Loren) stays at home while her fascist husband Emanuele (John Vernon) goes off to see his idols. As their building empties to see the dictators parade through the streets, Antonietta begins a relationship with her homosexual neighbour Gabriele (Mastroianni) that will change both their lives.

After moving into his late father's mansion, with his girlfriend Rebecca (Lisa Pelikan), Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) begins to dabble in the occult. Continuing his father's work, he inadvertently unleashes a flurry of nasty supernatural creatures and accidentally resurrects his dead father Malcolm (Michael Des Barres).
Roger Moore makes his 007 debut, replacing Sean Connery as Britain's most celebrated secret agent. In the eighth instalment of the franchise, Bond is tasked with cracking a voodoo-controlled drug smuggling racket in the Caribbean, and sets about the task with his customary verve, finding time for speedboat chases and crocodile encounters along the way. Admirable support is offered by Clifton James, as an irate Southern Sheriff, and Jane Seymour, as tarot expert Solitaire but they face a formidable foe in drugs baron Kananga (Yaphet Kotto).

Classic Powell and Pressburger drama about an aspiring ballerina who is presented with a stark choice between her artistic ambitions and the man she loves. Taiwanese crime drama directed by Hsiao-hsien Hou. Set in 1980s Taipei, the film follows Lin (Lin Yang) as she struggles to keep her family from being torn apart. She spends her life working in KFC, attending night classes and obsessing over local gigolo Ah-sang (Fan Yang) whilst also trying to keep her younger siblings from becoming lost in a life of crime. Her mother and older brother are dead and her father (Fu-Sheng Tsui) works away from home, leaving Lin to care for her brother Lin Hsiao-fang (Jack Kao), who has become involved with a local gang, and her sister, who has recently turned to stealing. To get away from the perpetual troubles around her, Lin escapes to a world of fantasy where she imagines herself as the title character from her favourite manga series - 'Daughter of the Nile'.
John Moxey directs this cult British horror starring Christopher Lee. In the 1600s the town of Whitewood, Massachusetts tries Elizabeth Selwyn (Patricia Jessel) for being a witch. Desperate to save herself, she makes a pact with Lucifer in exchange for her soul. Fast forward three hundred years and young student Nan Barlow (Venetia Stephenson) is researching witchcraft in history for her college thesis. She decides to take a trip to Whitewood following a recommendation from her professor Alan Driscoll (Lee). Born and raised in the town, Driscoll suggests she lodge at the Ravens Inn, run by the mysterious Mrs Newless (Jessel). However, Nan soon finds that things are not all they seem in Whitewood and that Mrs Newless might be hiding a terrifying secret.
John Merivale and Didi Sullivan star in this Italian sci-fi horror directed by Riccardo Freda. The film follows a team of archaeologists led by Dr John Fielding (Merivale) as they investigate the ruins of an ancient Mayan city where the inhabitants suddenly disappeared thousands of years previously. Descending into a cave containing a sacrificial pool, the team unwittingly awaken a vengeful blob-like monster and find themselves in a race against time to try and take it down before it can take any more victims. The cast also includes Gerard Herter and Giacomo Rossi-Stuart.
Tetsuya Mariko co-writes and directs this violent Japanese drama. The film follows a pair of brothers on very different paths. Teenager Taira Ashihara (Yûya Yagira) leaves town just before the coming of age festival and embarks on a journey of self-destruction, picking fights with whoever he meets and taking a beating along the way. As he continues down this path of violence, Taira is joined by youngster Yuya Kitahara (Masaki Suda) who, although cowardly at first, soon finds himself drawn in by the chaos of Taira's mindless rampage. Meanwhile, Shota (Nijiro Murakami) hopelessly searches for his violent brother Taira.
Triple bill of Japanese crime dramas directed by Takashi Miike. In 'Shinjuku Triad Society' (1995), when the Dragon's Claw gang from Taiwan attempts a take-over of the dope, extortion and prostitution rackets run by the ruling Japanese Yakuza, a lone cop predicts carnage. In a crusade against the gangs, the cop single-handedly attempts to stem the growing tide of violence. But, when he discovers that the cop's younger brother is in fact the lover of one of the gang leaders, chaos ensues. 'Rainy Dog' (1997) follows Yuuji (Shô Aikawa), a Japanese mobster holed up in Taipei working as a hitman for a Triad boss. Added to this complicated existence is the fact that his ex-wife has just dumped a young boy on his doorstep. As Yuuji continues to do business as usual, only a final, brutal shoot-out will bring him and the boy closer together. Finally, in 'Ley Lines' (1999), three boys attracted by the excitement of Tokyo city find themselves caught up in the notorious Shinjuku district and a gangster lifestyle they can't escape. Before long they find themselves on the wrong side of the local crime lord and start fearing for their lives. |
