Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning political biopic stars Daniel Day-Lewis as America's 16th president Abraham Lincoln.

The film focuses on the last few months of Lincoln's life, which not only saw the ending of slavery despite dogged opposition from many inside Lincoln's own cabinet, but also the Union victory in the American Civil War.

The supporting cast includes Sally Field as Lincoln's wife Mary, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Lincoln's son Robert and Tommy Lee Jones as Radical Republican Congressional leader Thaddeus Stevens.

Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has enlisted the services of live-in psychiatrist Dr Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) to help with her numerous family problems - but between Elizabeth's loser brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller), her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz), and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath), Dr Hoffman has certainly got her work cut out.

A critical film in the history of British Cinema, Sally Potter's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's witty modernist novel took eight years to make it to the screen and is a meticulously crafted commentary on all things English as well as being a wonderfully romantic tale. Tilda Swinton stars as the eponymous hero who lives for 500 years and changes sex halfway. Granted a favour of immortality from Quentin Crisp's archetypal Queen Elizabeth I, Orlando proceeds to spend the next few centuries in search of love, life and adventure.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan directs this Turkish drama following a group of men who set out to locate a dead body in the remote Anatolian steppes. The team comprises ten men, including Doctor Cemal (Muhammet Uzuner), Commissioner Naci (Yilmaz Erdogan), Prosecutor Nusret (Taner Birsel) and their entourage as well as the two men suspected of carrying out the murder. The men set out in the evening to search for the corpse's burial place but are unable to locate it. As they travel unsuccessfully from one location to another, and rest for the night at the home of a village elder, the various back-stories of their troubled lives are subtly revealed. The film won the the Grand Prix at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

Clint Eastwood directs this biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover, the head of American law enforcement for nearly 50 years. Hoover was the first ever Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from its inception till his death in 1972. Both admired and vilified during his lifetime, he covertly collated a number of files on political and public figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt, the Kennedy brothers and Martin Luther King, while at the same time keeping the truth of his own private life a closely guarded secret. The film offers a portrayal of a complex and controversial figure, as seen through the eyes of Hoover himself. Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Ed Westwick, Dermot Mulroney and Judi Dench co-star.

Alex Cox's 1980s cult classic in which a luckless man forced to take a job as a car repossession worker finds that it transforms his life. Otto (Emilio Estevez) is an L.A. punk rocker with an attitude - qualities which cost him dearly when he is fired from his job at a supermarket after a fight with a co-worker.
