Significant changes in surgical training have occurred over the past decade, with the inevitable progress towards specialization in the various surgical specialties. The current edition of Essential Surgical Practice: Higher Surgical Training in General Surgery reflects these latest developments with a new structure that accurately mirrors current surgical training. This new edition excludes surgical specialties that are distinct from general surgery, allowing an increased focus on topics of direct relevance to trainees in higher surgical training. Over 31 chapters, the book provides detailed information on those specialties of which the general surgeon is required to have a working knowledge, and highlights core information for revision and quick reference. Topics include: * Surgical biology and pathology * Surgical craft approaches and technologies * Perioperative care * Cardiovascular, pulmonary and renal pathophysiology * Surgical infections * Interventional radiology * Trauma and head injuries * Disorders of the thyroid and adrenal glands * Disorders of the stomach, liver, spleen, colon and pancreas * Bariatric surgery This book can be used with confidence by those enrolled in local courses and is also consistent with the scope and level of information required for international postgraduate examinations, such as the Joint Surgical Colleges' Fellowship Examination. To enhance the book's utility, the print edition includes complimentary access to a VitalSource ebook online and offline on your PC or Mac, iPhone(R)/iPod Touch(R)/ iPad(R), Kindle Fire or Android(TM) device.
Ultrasound guidance of liver surgery is a very sophisticated approach that permits the performance of otherwise unfeasible operations, discloses the true extent of tumors, increases the indications for hepatectomy, and renders surgery safer. Despite this, it has remained relatively neglected in the literature over the past two decades, during which time much progress has been achieved. This is the first atlas on the subject, and it is comprehensive in scope. The state of the art in the use of ultrasound for resection guidance is carefully documented, and new techniques for exploration of the biliary tract and facilitation of transplant surgery are presented. Further important topics include the role of ultrasound in laparoscopic approaches, the use of contrast agents for diagnosis and staging, and developments in the planning of surgical strategy. The editor is a leading authority whose group has been responsible for a variety of advances in the field. He has brought together other experts whose aim throughout is to provide clear information and guidance on the optimal use of ultrasound when performing liver surgery. This atlas is intended especially for hepatobiliary surgeons but will also be of considerable value for general surgeons.

Few doctors receive formal training in how to conduct an outpatient consultation or how to compose and dictate an outpatient letter. Trainee surgeons in each new specialty spend their first few weeks in outpatient clinics learning by experience with all the pitfalls this entails. Much work involves seeing patients who have been brought back for review by their predecessors. Problems are caused by inexperience, unfamiliarity, fear of making mistakes, the pressure of patient numbers and lack of training.New doctors will find little help in the standard textbooks on how to follow-up patients. This book provides the necessary background information to enable rational decision making in a concise and economical style. It describes reasonable and safe lines of management suitable for most patients, ideal for when discussion with a senior colleague is not possible. Since the First Edition was published surgical outpatient services have undergone tremendous change. The traditional general surgical clinic has been replaced by specialist clinics where decisions on patient management are taken by multidisciplinary teams. This new edition is multi-authored to take account of the multidisciplinary approach. As well as an overall review of general outpatient issues, every major specialty is covered, with clear notes for each condition covering history, examination, investigations, results, treatment, follow-up and post-operative follow-up. The book can be read before or during clinics, and enables trainees to have an action plan in mind before they walk into a consultation. All surgeons have to be trained to go through the process of dealing with unfamiliar clinical conditions for the first time. Surgeons will use this book as a useful foundation on which to build their own personal knowledge. |
