Remaking the Human - Cosmetic Technologies of Body Repair, Reshaping, and Replacement (Hardcover): Alvaro Jarrin, Chiara... Remaking the Human - Cosmetic Technologies of Body Repair, Reshaping, and Replacement (Hardcover)
Alvaro Jarrin, Chiara Pussetti
R2,945 Discovery Miles 29 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The technological capacity to transform biology - repairing, reshaping and replacing body parts, chemicals and functions - is now part of our lives. Humanity is confronted with a variety of affordable and non-invasive 'enhancement technologies': anti-ageing medicine, aesthetic surgery, cognitive and sexual enhancers, lifestyle drugs, prosthetics and hormone supplements. This collection focuses on why people find these practices so seductive and provides ethnographic insights into people's motives and aspirations as they embrace or reject enhancement technologies, which are closely entangled with negotiations over gender, class, age, nationality and ethnicity.

Secret Lives - Real Lives in the World's Oldest Profession (Hardcover): Dr Diana Prince Secret Lives - Real Lives in the World's Oldest Profession (Hardcover)
Dr Diana Prince
R713 Discovery Miles 7 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Secret Lives This book explores the fascinating and dangerous world of the American prostitute. Dr. Prince's landmark study in 1985 was the largest study on prostitution ever conducted with over 450 subjects. The requests for that study from law enforcement and social services agencies led to additional research since that time. This unique book is taken from hundreds of hours of interviews with call girls, street walkers, and brothel workers in California and Nevada. Told in the words of the women, themselves, the reader gets a glimpse into a profession that is usually shrouded in stereotypes and misinformation. The book provides a rare insight into these women and their world.

Cultures of Care in Aging (Hardcover): Thomas Boll, Dieter Ferring, Jaan Valsiner Cultures of Care in Aging (Hardcover)
Thomas Boll, Dieter Ferring, Jaan Valsiner
R2,972 Discovery Miles 29 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about caring for elderly persons in the 21th century. It shows that care has many facets and is influenced by many factors. Central topics of this book thus include the relation between the person depending on care and the care giver(s), the impacts of caregiving on the family and the larger social context, as well as socio-cultural and political aspects underlying the growing need for and the practice of formal and informal care. It is evident that care as a real-life phenomenon of our time needs the co-operation ofmultiple disciplines to better understand, describe, explain and modify phenomena of elder care. Such a need for crossdisciplinary research is even more urgent given the increasing population aging and the impending gaps between demand and supply of care. The present book is dedicated to this approach and provides a first substantive integration of knowledge from geropsychology, other gerosciences, and cultural psychologies by a multi-disciplinary cast of internationally renowned authors. Cultural psychology emerged as a valuable partner of the gerosciences by contributing essentially to a deeper understanding of the relevant issues. Reading of this book provides the reader-researcher or practitioner-with new insights of where the problems of advancing age take our caring tasks in our 21st century societies and it opens many new directions for further work in the field. Finally and above all, this book is also a strong plea for solidarity between generations in family and society in a rapidly changing globalized world.

The Bioarchaeology of Socio-Sexual Lives - Queering Common Sense About Sex, Gender, and Sexuality (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017):... The Bioarchaeology of Socio-Sexual Lives - Queering Common Sense About Sex, Gender, and Sexuality (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Pamela L. Geller
R3,474 Discovery Miles 34 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume uses bioarchaeological remains to examine the complexities and diversity of past socio-sexual lives. This book does not begin with the presumption that certain aspects of sex, gender, and sexuality are universal and longstanding. Rather, the case studies within-extend from Neolithic Europe to pre-Columbian Mesoamerica to the nineteenth-century United States-highlight the importance of culturally and historically contextualizing socio-sexual beliefs and practices. The Bioarchaeology of Socio-Sexual Lives highlights a major shortcoming in many scholarly and popular presentations of past socio-sexual lives. They reveal little about the ancient or historic group under study and much about Western society's modern state of heteronormative affairs. To interrogate commonsensical thinking about socio-sexual identities and interactions, this volume draws from critical feminist and queer studies. Reciprocally, bioarchaeological studies extend social theorizing about sex, gender, and sexuality that emphasizes the modern, conceptual, and discursive. Ultimately, The Bioarchaeology of Socio-Sexual Lives invites readers to think more deeply about humanity's diversity, the naturalization of culture, and the past's presentation in mass-media communications.

Explorations in Ethics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): David Kaspar Explorations in Ethics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
David Kaspar
R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Explorations in Ethics is a collection of essays with a speculative bent. Its twelve contributors attempt to take ethics thinking in new directions. Ethics is fundamentally a speculative discipline. We sometimes lose sight of that because of our current scholarly practices, which include reliance on a set of traditional works in ethics, deferring to the scholarly literature, drawing from the evidential sources afforded us. This volume breaks the mold. It is committed, first and foremost, to exploring new ground in a methodologically sound way whilst respecting and building on the literature where needed. The contributors range from world renowned ethicists to early-career scholars. The ethical standpoints represented are various and the overall aim of this collection is to stimulate fresh thinking.

Marlene Dobkin De Rios, Roger Rumrrill
R1,965 Discovery Miles 19 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One country's sacrament is another's illicit drug, as officials in South America and the United States are well aware. For centuries, a hallucinogenic tea made from a giant vine native to the Amazonian rainforest has been taken as a religious sacrament across several cultures in South America. Many spiritual leaders, shamans, and their followers consider the tea and its main component - ayahuasca - to be both enlightening and healing. In fact, ayahuasca (pronounced a-ja-was-ka) loosely translated means spirit vine. In this book, de Rios and Rumrrill take us inside the history and realm of, as well as the raging arguments about, the substance that seems a sacrament to some and a scourge to others. Their book includes text from the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances and interviews with shamans in the Amazon.

Many spiritual leaders, shamans, and their followers consider the tea and its main component - ayahuasca - to be both enlightening and healing. In fact, ayahuasca (pronounced a-ja-was-ka) loosely translated means spirit vine. Ayahuasca has moved into the United States, causing legal battles in the Supreme Court and rulings from the United Nations. Some U.S. church groups are using the hallucinogen in their ceremonies and have fought for government approval to do so. The sacrament has also drawn American drug tourists to South America to partake, say authors de Rios and Rumrrill. But they warn that these tourists are being put at risk by charlatans who are not true shamans or religious figures, just profiteers.

In this book, de Rios and Rumrrill take us inside the history and realm of, as well as the raging arguments about, the substance that seems a sacrament to some and a scourge to others. Opponents fight its use even as U.S. scientists and psychologists continue investigations of whether ayahuasca has healing properties that might be put to conventional use for physical and mental health. This book includes text from the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances and interviews with shamans in the Amazon.

Washington Irving
R954 Discovery Miles 9 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A vital book on momentous events in Iberia
The works of Washington Irving, one of the earliest of the great American writers, need little introduction. He was a man of varied interests and enormous talent able to write entertaining and enduring fiction including the iconic 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and the wonderful collection of travelogue and fantasy that is 'Tales from the Alhambra.' His ability as an historian cannot be underestimated and he was able to leave posterity a canon of outstanding books on subjects ranging from the early days of exploration in his homeland, to this book, 'The Conquest of Granada, ' about the history of Spain-a country in which he worked while living in the famous Alhambra of Granada. The period of Spanish history this book concentrates on is fascinating. The Islamic world, both in the form of the Ottoman Turks and the Moors of North Africa, made enormous inroads into 'Christian' Europe over hundreds of years. Before this Islamic tide finally abated it had to be turned back at Tours-almost at the gates of Paris-by Charles Martel in AD 732 and would besiege Vienna in 1529 and 1683. Large tracts of land fell under their control and nowhere was more successfully or enduringly settled than Spain in the form of the jewel that was Al-Andalus. A series of campaigns in the last years of the 14th century known as the 'Reconquista' saw the Catholic monarchs, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon finally bring about the fall of the Nasrid dynasty's hold on the emirate of Granada. Irving's work is an acknowledged classic and is essential reading for all those interested in the epic struggle between the sword and cross and the scimitar and crescent.
