Wrestling with the Divine - Religion, Science, and Revelation (Paperback): Christopher C. Knight Wrestling with the Divine - Religion, Science, and Revelation (Paperback)
Christopher C. Knight
R521 Discovery Miles 5 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Christopher Knight uses the notion of revelation to ask whether scientifically literate people need to be as simplistic in their religion as they are sophisticated in their science. Knight extends the dialogue begun in John Polkinghorne's and Arthur Peacocke's work to explore new possibilities. Their stress on natural processes as the form of divine immanence and the locus of divine action opens the way to Knight's rethinking the psychology of religious experience as a medium of divine revelation.

Torment of the Soul - Suicidal Depression and Spirituality (Hardcover): Benedict Auer, Jessy A. Ang Torment of the Soul - Suicidal Depression and Spirituality (Hardcover)
Benedict Auer, Jessy A. Ang
R594 Discovery Miles 5 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores the ways spirituality interacts with suicidal depression. This is not a book of answers nor is it a research study; rather, this is a book of questions that looks at suicide with human eyes and spiritual insight. Through the experiences and studies of the two authors, we explore the role that faith plays in the life of a depressed person who is considering suicide, as well as the cultural history and religious beliefs on suicide. There is not a single way to deal with suicide and depression. However, the unexplored areas of spirituality may provide additional insight for understanding and coping with the disease, as well as the emotional effect of such final act. In the end, we hope this book will provide a better understanding of why some suicidal people are able to utilize faith to help them overcome the lowest points of depression, and why some people, no matter the spirituality they have, find death the only solution.

Rumination (recyclic negative thinking), is now recognised as important in the development, maintenance and relapse of recurrence of depression. For instance, rumination has been found to elevate, perpetuate and exacerbate depressed mood, predict future episodes of depression, and delay recovery during cognitive therapy.
Cognitive therapy is one of the most effective treatments for depression. However, depressive relapse and recurrence following cognitive therapy continue to be a significant problem. An understanding of the psychological processes which contribute to relapse and recurrence may guide the development of more effective interventions.
This is a major contribution to the study and treatment of depression which reviews a large body of research on rumination and cognitive processes, in depression and related disorders, with a focus on the implications of this knowledge for treatment and clinical management of these disorders.

* First book on rumination in depressive and emotional disorders
* Contributors are the leaders in the field
* First editor is a rising researcher and clinician with specialist interest in depression, and second editor is world renowned for his work on cognitive therapy of emotional disorders

Jerry Davis
R744 Discovery Miles 7 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The truth is we are all just a little bit crazy in some areas of our life to a whole lot of crazy. Being miss-directed is one of the things mankind has in common as the various forms of insanity work the same way in every one of us. We've all been programmed to unknowingly believe in a host of lies and it's our belief in the need to uphold the lies that do us in. There are laws that pertain to the universe. These laws cannot be broken without creating diverse consequences. With every action there is an opposite reaction of effect. And where do the decisions we make come from? They generally come from our minds. The question then becomes, "Who's controlling the mind?" If your mind is at work and in agreement with you then you would rightly say you are controlling your mind. But if you occasionally find that your mind is working against you then you should consider "you are not solely in control." Jesus referred to Satan as, "the father of lies." I intend to show how the workings of evil are constructed through the placement of lies and how these lies in combination are at work to disrupt our lives. I will show how the longest and greatest lie is packaged and how the "six major steps" that makes up "a combined package" works powerfully against you. Then I will show how the effects from the lies get all mixed in with the pain you experience and how the end results can be devastating. This book is about our need for revelation and offers the reader an opportunity to begin a personal journey with life as it truly is. This is a lifelong journey in Spirit and truth and it begins with your full recognition of the need for having God working continuously in your life.

Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World by William Walker Atkinson

In this New Thought classic, Atkinson looks at the law of attraction in the thought world. He points out the similarities between the law of gravitation and the mental law of attraction. He explains that thought vibrations are as real as those manifesting as light, heat, magnetism and electricity. The difference is in the vibratory rate which also explains the fact that thought vibrations cannot usually be perceived by our 5 senses.

Contents: Law of attraction in the thought world; Thought-waves and their power of reproduction; About the mind; Mind building; Secret of the will; How to become immune to injurious thought attraction; Transmutation of negative thought; Law of mental control; Asserting the life force; Training the habit mind; Psychology of the emotions; Developing new brain cells; Attractive power-desire force; Law, not chance.

What It Means To Grow Up - A Guide In Understanding The Development Of Character (Hardcover): Fritz Kunkel What It Means To Grow Up - A Guide In Understanding The Development Of Character (Hardcover)
Fritz Kunkel
R871 Discovery Miles 8 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

WHAT IT MEANS TO GWW UP PREFACE This book should be valuable in dealing with per sonality problems. It should help young people to understand themselves, and should be a resource to parents and teachers, and to all others who deal with children and youth. We must teach youth to face calmly the facts, the tasks and difficulties of actual, everyday life and to master them, for it is not a cold abstract theory or a world-forgetting ideal morality which we are called upon to transmit to the new generation. Which means, at the same time, that we must show how one can recognize, understand, and master ones qwn peculiarities, ones own tasks and diffi culties. We must teach the art of growing up. That the practical way of overcoming personality problems is always at the same time also the ethical way may be a fact tremendously important from philosophical and religious points of view. For the present we cannot let it be a determining factor in our psychological problem. Young people are not able, as a rule, to make the right decision so long as they perceive moral rightness only on theoretical grounds. It is true, however, that they learn quickly PREFACE and simply to take the usable way as soon as they have come to the conviction that here, in this con crete specific case, it is the only possible, practical way out In this book only facts and their connections have been set forth, and certain practical inferences have been pointed out. Everything else, the discussion of the premises and the development of the point of view philosophically., must be left to the reader. We can and must help young people understand their experiences and deduce the necessary conclu sions. But tlieir point of yiewtheir life philosophy, their religio, they, inust work out for themselves. They cannot be absolved from this most difficult and most important task in life. We can assist in the preparation for it, but the final decision in this mat ter each person must make alone and for himself. Therefore in this book the endeavor is made, over and again, to induce the reader to think for himself and to judge these psychological problems for him self. He shall seek his own point of view, call his own experiences into council, develop his own judg ment, deepen it and correct it over and again until in this way he becomes mature, grows up, gains wisdom. In different countries on the continent, soon after the appearance of this book, it so happened that sev vi PREFACE eral teachers began to read it with, their classes. Quite a number of results, in the form of letters, articles and also applications for instance to va rious novels and plays, have been collected. It would be valuable for the psychology of adolescence, and also possibly of great interest for comparative folk psychology, if similar results from within the range of Anglo-Saxon culture might be received. While remaining faithful to the author's meaning, Walter Kaufmann has removed many encumbrances inherent in Hegel's style.

My Nine Lives - A Psychotherapist's Journey From Victim To Survivor (Hardcover): Jane Leigh My Nine Lives - A Psychotherapist's Journey From Victim To Survivor (Hardcover)
Jane Leigh
R893 Discovery Miles 8 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This powerfully moving, brutally honest and inspiring memoir tells of the tumultuous life of renowned Melbourne-based Australian psychotherapist and Beyond Blue ambassador, Jane Leigh. Born in Singapore and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Jane's childhood was filled with emotional trauma. As a child, she suffered sexual assault at the hands of her parents and in her adolescent years, by priests of the Roman Catholic Church. At seventeen years of age, Jane was raped then forced into a loveless marriage, leaving her a single mother of two children at the age of twenty-three. Just as Jane began her struggle for survival, she was hit by more devastating news - the savage murder of her uncle David, the only true father she ever had. These events resulted in Jane being diagnosed with chronic depression and finally led to her severe mental breakdown in 2002, where she was confronted with two choices: Give up or stand and fight. Jane chose to confront the crippling impact of her sexual abuse and the aftermath left in the wake of its trauma. From legally confronting the unethical methods of one of Australia's largest private pathology companies to a series of failed, abusive relationships with men, Jane's touching story narrates her long, arduous journey of counselling, therapy, self-discovery and eventual healing. Jane went on to further her education and obtained her Masters degree in Counselling with Monash University. In 2007, Jane set up her own private counselling practice in western Melbourne, where, till this day, she continues, through her profession, personal experience and role as a Beyond Blue ambassador, to help thousands of people suffering from the debilitating effects of mental illness caused by trauma and abuse.

As much as we may not want to admit it, death is a part of life. When Jesse Kalfel discovered that his mother wanted to be cremated rather than buried, he queried some of his friends concerning how they wanted their bodies handled after death. Many of them also expressed an interest in cremation but had not given much thought to what should be done with their ashes.

In "So You're Cremated ... Now What?" Kalfel provides many commercially available scattering possibilities along with some of his own creative suggestions. Would you like to distribute your earthly remains by being packed into fireworks or have them shot into space? How about placing your ashes inside a time capsule or scattering them around exotic locales in the world? Would you like your final remains turned into a real diamond or cast into a pink flamingo lawn sculpture?

Read "So You're Cremated ... Now What? Over One Hundred Creative Ways to Scatter Your Ashes and Other Useful Information" and gain insights about a serious topic written in a lighthearted manner. If you're considering cremation of your final remains, this book presents various options and provides a way to discuss the subject with loved ones.

One Man in His Time - A Memoir (Hardcover): William C Prentiss One Man in His Time - A Memoir (Hardcover)
William C Prentiss
R814 Discovery Miles 8 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"One Man In His Time: A Memoir" is an account of a full life which includes Prentiss's participation in both national and local politics at a high level and his friendship with major figures including Sen. George McGovern and many others. He had two meetings with Gov. Jimmy Carter during his presidential campaigns, and he was a guest in the Reagan White House to receive a major medal. Other portions of his memoir describe, mostly in anecdotal accounts, his extensive work with troubled teenagers sent to his program by the Orange County Florida Juvenile Court. He was also a teacher and administrator at both the secondary (Florida Military School) and college (Valencia College in Orlando) levels of education. He reached many high goals in his life despite having a troubled early adolescence which he describes in detail. His Air Force experience as an Intelligence Officer was also one of high adventure. Prentiss has described himself psychologically as a "seeker of high sensation." This is borne out in his memoir including his choice to be a Volunteer Fireman and his Air Force "close calls." Much of his life is told in the details of his life and times. A reader will have a better feel for the years between 1932 and the present after reading this Memoir.
