This volume investigates the neglected topic of mental action, and
shows its importance for the metaphysics, epistemology, and
phenomenology of mind. Twelve specially written essays address such
questions as the following: Which phenomena should we count as
mental actions--imagining, remembering, judging, for instance? How
should we explain our knowledge of our mental actions, and what
light does that throw on self-knowledge in general? What
contributions do mental actions make to our consciousness? What is
the relationship between the voluntary and the active, in the
mental sphere? What are the similarities and differences between
mental and physical action, and what can we learn about each from
the other?
Considering stress, this text covers the discovery of stress; the
dissection of stress; the disease of adaptation; and implications
and applications. Annotated references are also included.
This rare book contains the first volume of William James s, The
Principles of Psychology. A thorough introduction to the subject of
psychology, this fascinating book offers insights into
psychological issues not available elsewhere, demonstrated clearly
and concisely in the hope that they may be accessible to the
aspiring student and seasoned professional alike. Based on his own
classroom materials, this comprehensive text is ideal for the
psychology neophyte and covers the brain, thought, methods for
analysing behaviour, association, consciousness, attention, time,
and memory. William James was an esteemed researcher at Harvard
University and one of the most seminal thinkers of the 19th
century. His other influential works include: Human Immortality
(1898) and The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human
Nature (1902). This book was originally published in 1890 and is
proudly republished now with an introductory biography of the
author."
This collection "TWO ACT PLAYS" contains two two act plays:
"Redemption," and "Death of a Psychiatrist."
The Principles of Psychology is a two-volume introduction to the
study of the human mind. Based on his classroom lessons and first
published in 1890, James has gathered together what he feels to be
the most interesting and most accessible information for the
beginning student. Psychology, according to James, deals with
thoughts and feelings as its facts and does not attempt to
determine where such things come from. This would be the realm of
metaphysics, and he is careful to avoid crossing over from science
into philosophy. This first volume contains discussions of the
brain, methods for analyzing behavior, thought, consciousness,
attention, association, time, and memory. Anyone wanting a thorough
introduction to psychology will find this work useful and engaging.
American psychologist and philosopher WILLIAM JAMES (1842-1910),
brother of novelist Henry James, was a groundbreaking researcher at
Harvard University and one of the most popular thinkers of the 19th
century. Among his many works are Human Immortality (1898) and The
Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature (1902).
This book has been in the making since my days at Ahmadu Bello
University Zaria, in the Faculty of Education. I had always wanted
to produce a book that is small and easy enough to read and yet
succinct to meet the needs of the undergraduate or graduate
students in Education who are preparing for their sessional exams
The book has undergone considerable revisions to meet that target
goal. In part these revisions have been necessitated by the
geometric increase in our knowledge of general psychology, as well
as science, in the last two decades. This is to say nothing of the
psychology of learning. The increase in our knowledge- base has
further been doubled by the new technology of the Internet. Some
have even argued that, the availability of the Internet has
rendered the publishing of such books redundant. However, I'm
convinced that books would continue to play a central role in our
lives for the foreseeable future. I had wanted to include most of
the material that psychologists subsume under the heading of
learning. I have tried to include important topics as well as new
developments in the field that I believe an undergraduate student
will find useful. Also included are "cultural Implications," which
are applications of the general topic in a classroom setting in the
relevant culture.

Who among us has not experienced "failure"? Rebounding is about the
process of rediscovering, reinventing, and recovering yourself in
the face of a personal or professional setback or failure. It is
about learning how to suck the juice out of a lemon and turn it
into lemonade, picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and
moving on with the business of living at hand...emerging even
stronger, wiser, and with more confidence than before We all have a
unique set of experiences, talents, and gifts - all of which
present opportunities for growth and for unique perspective.
Blending personal experience with practical suggestions for
reengaging, Rebounding presents a perspective that gives one the
space to breathe in the face of a failure and learn how to turn
that liability into one of your greatest assets. With a rare sense
of vulnerability, the author opens up about some of her greatest
challenges and what core beliefs created an ability to experience
an inner resilience that many never talk about. Sharing the failure
of a business, the failure of a marriage, and struggles with her
recent financial reality, she creates in Rebounding a unique chance
to get inside the ebbs and flows of life and examine the real power
of personal choice in the face of adversity. Word Count: 212
The HR chicks have many comical experiences working together. Well,
we think so. She has seen it all and has had to deal with many
unpleasant experiences. She had gotten to a point in her career
where work was just a job. Insert me here. I had experience, but
was not prepared for the environment I had walked in to. I was used
to a more "normal" environment so to speak. But let's be honest, is
normal really any fun anymore? Can you laugh at normal? Write a
book about it? No. I had decided early on I wanted to be involved
in HR or training of some sort. Why I will never know. Something
about the field has always drawn me in. Intrigued me so to speak,
but for this job, thank God I minored in Psychology. The HR chicks
clicked immediately. A mentor relationship was formed and work
became a playground that they both actually enjoyed going to. Well
let me rephrase, it became tolerable. She gave me the knowledge and
know-how to be successful, and I gave her a new perspective and my
wacky view on things to make the environment more enjoyable. Our
stories in this book are crazy, yes. Is it our perspective of the
situation, yes, but remember we are professionals, because WE are
the HR chicks.
Mormonism and the Emotions: An Analysis of LDS Scriptural Texts is
an introductory Latterday Saint (LDS) theology of emotion that is
both canonically based and scientifically informed. It highlights
three widely accepted characteristics of emotion that emerge from
scientific perspectives-namely, the necessity of cognition for its
emergence, the personal responsibility attached to its
manifestations, and its instrumentality in facilitating various
processes of human development and experience. In analyzing the
basic theological structure of Mormonism and its unique canonical
texts the objective is to determine the extent to which LDS
theology is compatible with this three-fold definition of emotion.
At this basic level of explanation, the conclusion is that science
and Mormon theology undoubtedly share a common perspective. The
textual investigation focuses on unique Mormon scriptures and on
their descriptions of six common emotions: hope, fear, joy, sorrow,
love, and hate. For each of these emotional phenomena the extensive
report of textual references consistently confirms an implied
presence of the outlined three-fold model of emotion. Thus, the
evidence points to the presence of an underlying folk model of
emotion in the text that broadly matches scientific definitions.
Additionally, the theological examination is enlarged with a
particular focus on the Mormon theology of atonement, which is
shown to play a significant role in LDS understandings of emotions.
A broad exploration of such areas as epistemology, cosmology,
soteriology, and the theological anthropology of Mormonism further
contextualizes the analysis and roots it in the LDS theological
worldview.
"I'm too fat." "I MUST be successful." "I'm scared." "It's because
when I was a kid..." "Daddy is never home." We all have frameworks
we've built for ourselves throughout life. Ways of being. Of
believing. Glasses through which we see life. Whether positive or
negative, they shape our whole being and affect our daily lives.
From being unsatisfied at home or in a relationship, to impressions
left with us from childhood, we constantly live out of lives
through these lenses we create in our mind. In Mindshift, Drs.
Marty Lerman and Samuel Kupper seek to take the reader on an
experiential journey to show how simple changes in perception, a
reworking of the way we see through our own lenses, can create
drastic positive change. Read about how one woman conquered cancer,
how a veteran came home and now lives without the lasting effects
of war, how kids no longer suffer from ADHD, and more. If these
people can create these kinds of changes in their lives with just a
simple shift of the mind, imagine what you could do. Your mind is
powerful. Harness it. Shift.
