Sex Differences in the Central Nervous System offers a comprehensive examination of the current state of sex differences research, from both the basic science and clinical research perspectives. Given the current NIH directive that funded preclinical research must consider both females and males, this topic is of interest to an increasing percentage of the neuroscience research population. The volume serves as an invaluable resource, offering coverage of a wide range of topics: sex differences in cognition, learning, and memory, sex hormone signaling mechanisms, neuroimmune interactions, epigenetics, social behavior, neurologic disease, psychological disorders, and stress. Discussions of research in both animal models and human patient populations are included.

The Sense Connection - Discovering How Your Five Senses Determine Your Effectiveness as a Person, Partner, and Parent... The Sense Connection - Discovering How Your Five Senses Determine Your Effectiveness as a Person, Partner, and Parent (Hardcover)
Robinson Garf Natalie Robinson Garfield, Natalie Robinson Garfield
R492 Discovery Miles 4 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For parents, understanding The Sense Connection enhances the skills needed to raise happy, well-adjusted children who will become successful, emotionally-balanced adults. For spouses or lovers, gaining insight into the ways in which primary sense channels compliment and conflict with each other can shift the balance from discord to harmony. And for friends and co-workers, a firmer grasp of how we as individuals view the world could mean more fulfilling and productive relationships and careers.

Can understanding others be as simple as identifying their primary sense channels and adjusting accordingly? Naturally, the sense mode does not define the entire personality. But it can offer you some useful short-cuts to understanding. Consider the many ways we put ourselves and others into neat, tidy, limiting pigeonholes. We've heard so many of these expressions: "What do you do?," "Where are you from?," "What's your sign?" These categorizations are merely stereotypes, whether professional, regional, ethnic, astrological, or even the result of The Myers-Briggs examination. Worse than that, they're dead ends. "He's an only child." "She's a Pisces." These stereotypes do not allow room for adaptation, for coming together and making a connection. By adding The Sense Connection to our lexicon, we can find a way to understand others quickly and accurately and then modify our interactive style to fit better with theirs, whatever their profession, cultural background, or birth sign.

Life's Values - Pleasure, Happiness, Well-Being, and Meaning (Hardcover): Alan H. Goldman Life's Values - Pleasure, Happiness, Well-Being, and Meaning (Hardcover)
Alan H. Goldman
R1,559 Discovery Miles 15 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Life's Values Alan H. Goldman seeks to explain what is of ultimate value in individual lives. The proposed candidates include pleasure, happiness, meaning, and well-being. Only the latter is the all-inclusive category of personal value, and it consists in the satisfaction of deep rational desires. Since individuals' rational desires differ, the book cannot dictate what will maximize your own well-being and what in particular you ought to pursue. However it can tell you to make your desires rational (that is, informed and coherent) and it can also explain the nature of these states that typically enter into well-being: pleasure, happiness, and meaning being typically partial causes as well as effects of well-being. All are by-products of satisfying rational desires and rarely successfully aimed at directly. Pleasure comes in sensory, intentional, and pure feeling forms, each with an opposite in pain or distress. Happiness in its primary sense is an emotion, not a constant state as some philosophers assume, and in secondary senses a mood (disposition to have an emotion) or temperament (disposition to be in a mood). Meaning in life is a matter of events in one's life fitting into intelligible narratives. Events in narratives are understood teleologically as well as causally, in terms of outcomes aimed at as well antecedent events. So, in the briefest terms, this book distinguishes and relates pleasure, happiness, well-being, and meaning, and relates each to motivation and value.

We Check in with Each Other (Hardcover): Lydia Bowers We Check in with Each Other (Hardcover)
Lydia Bowers
R346 Discovery Miles 3 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Help young children understand that it's okay to establish personal boundaries and change their minds. Physical and emotional awareness are key foundations of consent. We Check In with Each Other gives children a vocabulary to understand that they can change their minds at any time, develop and communicate personal boundaries, and build their social and emotional skills. The second book in the We Say What's Okay series, We Check In with Each Other follows Harrison as he checks in with himself and with his classmates throughout the day to see if they're still having fun and feeling safe. Using the book as a read-aloud, educators and families can model the language Harrison's teachers use to support children as they learn to listen to their body signals and respect the personal boundaries of others. The author, who hosts workshops and trainings on teaching consent for families and early childhood educators around the country, offers additional activities in the back of the book. Digital content includes a song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music. We Say What's Okay Series Teach the building blocks of consent in a child-friendly and developmentally appropriate way. Centered on a class of preschoolers, this series helps teach young children the social and emotional skills they need to understand the complexities of consent. Each book covers a consent theme, such as how to recognize the physical sensations that emotions create, look for body language cues, ask for and listen to choices, and know that our bodies have value. With believable, everyday situations and diverse characters, children can see themselves and others reflected in each story--and develop a vocabulary to communicate consent and feelings. Every book in the series is accompanied by a song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music.

Transformational Leadership - Trust, Motivation and Engagement (Hardcover): Edward J. Shelton Transformational Leadership - Trust, Motivation and Engagement (Hardcover)
Edward J. Shelton
R667 Discovery Miles 6 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the publication of They Love You They Hate You: Discovering Leadership in 2007, a new comprehensive review of basic leadership behaviors were presented to global corporations and frontline leaders that provided a guide to talent retention, empowerment, engagement, and commitment building. Now Dr. Shelton introduces "First They Came," a popular poem attributed to Martin Niemoller describing how Hitler, during his rise to power, purged group after group without much opposition. This is a continuance on the principles of courage, trust, and serving others around you in a transformational way. Transformational leadership is a philosophy and a way of life; it cannot be gained in a leadership short course but only through study, experience, and application. Constructive leadership qualities are not secret and have been applied since the beginning of mankind. Trust, kindness, integrity, empowerment, communications, other orientation, knowledge seeking, motivation, and courage are discussed in detail with supporting cases and anecdotes. Many of these characteristics are not taught in the academic schools of management, yet they remain as powerful today as they had been in the past. "First They Came" originated as anecdotes and life experiences regarding failed and successful acts of leadership. Chapters in the book deal with leadership in military, industry, academia, the Middle East, and across cultures. In the end, Martin Niemoller's poem suggests that we must set our moral standards higher and seek for one another's best interest in life and in business.

The System of Mental Philosophy. (Hardcover): Asa Mahan The System of Mental Philosophy. (Hardcover)
Asa Mahan; Edited by Richard, M Friedrich
R579 Discovery Miles 5 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The object of the following treatise is to furnish, not only for College classes, but especially for our Academies and High Schools a complete system of Mental Science. Two facts render the treatises in common use unadapted, particularly to the two purposes last named. Such treatises, in the first place, are too large for common use. Then, with hardly any exceptions, they treat of but one department of the mind, the Intellect. The object of the following treatise is to remedy both these defects-to furnish a work sufficiently ample for a clear elucidation of the whole subject, and, at the same time, so concise as not to over burden the mind of the pupil, on the one hand, and, on the other, to furnish a full knowledge of the entire system of Mental Science, the Philosophy, not of the Intellect merely, but also of the Sensibility and Will. It is fully believed by the Author, and he states this as the result of some thirty years' experience in teaching the science, that every pupil, not only in our College classes, but every advanced student in our Academies and High Schools, is capable of fully mastering this treatise, and that when he has done so, he will have attained not only to a distinct understanding of the different faculties of the mind, but also of the varied functions of each of those faculties. ASA MAHAN (1799-1889) was America's foremost Christian educator, reformer, philosopher, and pastor. He was founding president of two colleges and one university, where he was able to inspire numerous reforms, publish authoritative philosophical texts, and promote powerful revivals like his close associate Charles Finney. He led the way on all important fronts while being severely persecuted. He introduced the new curriculum later adopted by Harvard, was the first to instruct and grant liberal college degrees to white and colored women, advised Lincoln during the Civil War, and among many other remarkable achievements, was a father to the early evangelical and holiness movements.

R1,894 Discovery Miles 18 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a unique exploration of common myths about autism by examining these myths through the perspectives of autistic individuals. Examining the history of attitudes and beliefs about autism and autistic people, this book highlights the ways that these beliefs are continuing to impact autistic individuals and their families, and offers insights as to how viewing these myths from an autistic perspective can facilitate the transformation of these myths into a more positive direction. From 'savant syndrome' to the conception that people with autism lack empathy, each chapter examines a different social myth - tracing its origins, highlighting the implications it has had for autistic individuals and their families, debunking misconceptions and reconstructing the myth with recommendations for current and future practice. By offering an alternative view of autistic individuals as competent and capable of constructing their own futures, this book offers researchers, practitioners, individuals and families a deeper, more accurate, more comprehensive understanding of prevalent views about the abilities of autistic individuals as well as practical ways to re-shape these into more proactive and supportive practices.

Character Computing (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Alia Elbolock, Yomna Abdelrahman, Slim Abdennadher Character Computing (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Alia Elbolock, Yomna Abdelrahman, Slim Abdennadher
R4,238 Discovery Miles 42 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book gives an introduction into the theory and practice of the transdisciplinary field of Character Computing, introduced by Alia El Bolock. The latest scientific findings indicate that "One size DOES NOT fit all" in terms of how to design interactive systems and predict behavior to tailor the interaction experience. Emotions are one of the essential factors that influence people's daily experiences; they influence decision making and how different emotions are interpreted by different individuals. For example, some people may perform better under stress and others may break. Building upon Rosalind Picard's vision, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions and how different characters perceive and react to these emotions, hence having richer and truly tailored interaction experiences. Psychological processes or personality traits are embedded in the existing fields of Affective and Personality Computing. However, this book is the first that systematically addresses this including the whole human character; namely our stable personality traits, our variable affective, cognitive and motivational states as well as our morals, beliefs and socio-cultural embedding. The book gives an introduction into the theory and practice of the transdisciplinary field of Character Computing. The emerging field leverages Computer Science and Psychology to extend technology to include the whole character of humans and thus paves the way for researchers to truly place humans at the center of any technological development. Character Computing is presented from three main perspectives: Profiling and sensing the character Leveraging characters to build ubiquitous character-aware systems Investigating how to extend Artificial Intelligence to create artificial characters

Spirit and Form - On the True Meaning of Individuality and the Art of Psychological Sculpting (Hardcover): Benjamin M Goldberg Spirit and Form - On the True Meaning of Individuality and the Art of Psychological Sculpting (Hardcover)
Benjamin M Goldberg
R544 R503 Discovery Miles 5 030 Save R41 (8%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Each individual is unique, and that uniqueness should be cultivated. In "Spirit and Form," author and psychologist Dr. Benjamin M. Goldberg offers a thorough analysis of individuality and its development.

Formed during thirty-five years of study, Goldberg has developed the art of psychological sculpting. His theory is that an individual should not be "changed" or "fixed," but rather the process must be like the art of sculpting stone. "Spirit and Form" includes a detailed analysis of how this process of articulation, as the principle of spiritual fulfillment, personal happiness, and mental health, is either cultivated or thwarted. Goldberg emphasizes the critical distinction between the psychological impact of didactic and dialectical relationships and the artificiality of the distinction between the psychological and the spiritual.

In "Spirit and Form," Goldberg proposes a new model of human consciousness which revolutionizes the traditional model and obviates many of its conceptual problems. The occlusive layers of extrinsic thoughts, feelings, ambitions, and self-assessments that have peripheralized the individual are to be "chipped away," or subtracted from the equation, allowing the light of the true form or individuality to be revealed and seek its course of outward expression.

About the Book

A cursory survey of the field of psychology reveals raging debate among psychologists about the methods, goals, and significance of the discipline, psychology's own version of the science wars. The turn-of-the-century unification of the discipline has given way to a proliferation of competing approaches, a postmodern carnival of theories and methods that calls into question the positivist psychological tradition.

Bridging the gap between the traditional and the novel, Daniel B. Fishman proposes an invigorated, hybrid model for the practice of psychology-a radical, pragmatic reinvention of psychology based on databases of rigorous, solution-focused case studies. In The Case for Pragmatic Psychology, Fishman demonstrates how pragmatism returns psychology to a focus on contextualized knowledge about particular individuals, groups, organizations, and communities in specific situations, sensitive to the complexities and ambiguities of the real world. Fishman fleshes out his theory by applying pragmatic psychology to two contemporary psychosocial dilemmas --the controversies surrounding the "psychotherapy crisis" generated by the growth of managed care, and the heated culture wars over educational reform.

Moving with ease from the theoretical to the nuts and bolts of actual psychological intervention programs, Fishman proffers a strong argument for a new kind of psychology with far-reaching implications for enhancing human services and restructuring public policy.

Assessment, Treatment and Prevention of Suicidal Behavior (Hardcover): RI Yufit Assessment, Treatment and Prevention of Suicidal Behavior (Hardcover)
RI Yufit
R2,657 Discovery Miles 26 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Current and comprehensive information concerning the assessment and treatment of suicidal persons and the prevention of suicidal behavior

The eighth leading cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause among U.S. teens, suicide is unique in being self-inflicted and is, as such, often preventable. By assessing the risk of suicide accurately, providing effective treatment according to this risk, and implementing strategies against suicidal urges, mental health professionals can successfully guide their clients away from this senseless taking of life.

"Assessment, Treatment, and Prevention of Suicidal Behavior" provides the most current and comprehensive source of information, guidelines, and case studies for working with clients at risk of suicide. It offers clinicians, counselors, and other mental health professionals a practical toolbox on three main areas of interest:

  • Screening and Assessment covers empirically based assessment techniques and how they can define dimensions of vulnerability and measure the risk of self-destructive behavior. Authors discuss research on the use of each screening instrument, guidelines and suggestions for using the instrument in practice, and a case study illustrating its application.
  • Intervention and Treatment compares several different approaches for structuring psychotherapy with suicidal clients. Each author covers a psychotherapy system, its application to suicidal clients, and a case study of its real-world use.
  • Suicide and Violence explores the relationship between suicidal individuals and violence, covering suicide in specific contexts such as school violence, police confrontations, and terrorist violence. This section also includes a discussion of the increased risk of suicide in our more insecure and violent world, as well as how topromote coping styles for these new anxieties. While addressed mainly to psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals for use in serving their clients, as well as students of psychology, "Assessment, Treatment, and Prevention of Suicidal Behavior" is also an accessible and valuable resource for educators, school counselors, and others in related fields.
