Qualitative Research for Allied Health Professionals - Challenging
choices is a practical text, which addresses the links between
philosophy, research method and practice in an accessible, readable
way.
The subtitle, Challenging Choices', carries a double meaning:
qualitative research is both challenging (ie, demanding and
stimulating) to undertake and likely to be challenged and
contested. In particular, the choices researchers make when
designing, carrying out and reporting research will attract
scrutiny. To help researchers take on this double challenge, the
book: Highlights some of the choices involved in carrying out
qualitative research. Offers a wide range of practical examples to
show how different ways of qualitative researched can be managed.
Critically examines a variety if qualitative research methodologies
of particular interest to allied health professionals. Clarifies
the links between epistemology, methodology and method.
This book is structured in three parts. Part 1 Sensitizes
readers to the complex issue which challenge qualitative
researchers at the planning stage of their projects. In part 2, the
challenge of using different methodologies is critically explored
by eleven authors who describe their individual research
experiences. Part 3 examines the choices researchers make when they
evaluate and present research.
Action research has grown in stature in the fields of education and
industry because it centres on people and their problems. Thus it
necessarily shares aspects of their human frailty and apparent
fickleness: it refuses to be bound by the conventional methods used
to create boundaries in scientific research. In these days of
clinical governance, action research provides a valuable means of
developing responsible and reflective practices that takes into
account the different stakeholders within a public service
environment.
Action research in health care is something of a 'new age'
approach, and as such it is only beginning to be recognised and
acknowledged for its tremendous potential in bringing professionals
and their patients and clients closer together. This book is
written in response to all those of you who have struggled in vain
to find a practical, concise and yet insightful account of the use
of action research methods in health care practice.
Using the latest ideas on good practice from the Bradford Dementia
Group, Anthea Innes provides a complete and concise guide to
running a training programme for dementia care workers. She begins
with a brief outline of the key factors to consider prior to the
design, delivery and implementation of a programme. In particular
the book stresses the importance of getting to know the care
setting in which the trainees will practise, to ensure that the
training has direct relevance to participants. The author then
discusses the theoretical and practical issues involved in
designing the training programme, including advice on how best to
tailor it to the audience, and highlighting the practical points a
trainer needs to consider when delivering a programme. She
considers the problems that arise when attempting to convert theory
into practice, as well as factors that can help training be
relevant and acted upon. The book concludes with a discussion about
the best means of evaluating a training programme and its impact on
practice.
A complete guide to working with carers, this volume provides a
general overview of all the issues involved. The recent surge of
interest in the needs of carers is placed in its context of social
policy, legislation, demographic trends and changes in society.
General theories of assessment, groupwork, stress management and
problem-solving are applied to working with carers, and suggestions
for good practice are underpinned with references to relevant
research, policy documents, and the views of carers themselves.
Thus the book achieves a balance between day-to-day practicalities
and wider preoccupations. Each chapter covers practical issues and
ends with a summary of good practice guidance for practitioners and
managers. The author emphasises that carers are not an homogeneous
group, and includes chapters specifically on working with young
carers, with carers of people with mental health problems and of
parents of children with disabilities. Her clear style and sensible
approach ensure that the book is appropriate for practitioners at
all levels of experience.

The Drug Recognition Guide introduces an innovative method for
recognising and categorising medications, enabling readers to
easily identify the type and use of a generic drug by visually
deconstructing its name. Through its creative use of colour-coded
drug prefixes and suffixes, this pocket-sized guide makes generic
drug names distinctive, logical, and easy to pronounce and
remember. More than 700 drugs from over 200 different drug
categories are catalogued and colour-highlighted--helping you
understand what underlies a generic drug name. Organised by class
and use, the book's ten chapters cover a comprehensive range of

A caregiver (usually also known as informal caregiver) is an often
unpaid and without formal training (in the related disease) member
of a person's social network who helps them with activities of
daily living. Caregiving is most commonly used to address
impairments related to old age, disability, a disease or a mental
disorder. Typical duties of a caregiver might include taking care
of someone who has a chronic illness or disease; managing
medications or talking to doctors and nurses on someone's behalf;
helping to bathe or dress someone who is frail or disabled; or
taking care of household chores, meals or processes both formal and
informal documentation related to health for someone who cannot do
these things alone. With an increasingly aging population in all
developed societies, the role of caregiver has been increasingly
recognized as an important one, both functionally and economically.
Caregiving reflects various possible experiences with potentially
infinite perspectives. Many organizations that provide support for
persons with disabilities have developed various forms of support
for carers as well. However, different challenges for this category
of people are still strong: it involves changes within the family
system, and some caregivers may not possess the necessary resources
to deal with caregiving demands. Many caregivers assume the
caregiver role with little or no preparation and have to learn to
deal with several aspects of care in a very short time. Literature
shows that informal caregivers tend to experience more depressive
symptoms and poorer physical health outcomes in comparison to
non-caregivers. Moreover, informal caregivers have been repeatedly
acknowledged as a model of chronic stress, due to the high level of
daily stress that caregivers experience. All of these changes may
lead to a set of biopsychosocial disorders named as burden, which
results from the obligation to provide care, specifically within
the context of a chronic or long-term disease. Caregiver burden has
been conceptualized using a multidimensional perspective, in terms
of physical, emotional, social and financial difficulties/problems
experienced by the caregiver. In this state of the art, this book
aims to present some challenges caregivers may encounter during
their role, suggesting also some possible perspectives useful for
clinicians to address the different experiences of informal
caregivers, also connected to the different pathologies the
patients they care to suffer from and to the different
relationships they have with them.
