Months before Jay's first symptoms appeared, I felt compelled to start keeping a journal. Looking back on those fledgling entries, I recognize now that my decision to begin journaling at that particular time was prophetic. Writing in that "safe place" reconnected me to my heavenly Father during the most turbulent time of my life. As Jay was losing his battle with ALS, I found myself groping for the journal and pen. At my lowest times, I found God speaking encouragement to me through others. Countless times I recorded something in my journals spoken from the lips of strangers, friends, mentors, and pastors. These were bits of light and wisdom that I tried to implement in my hectic life as Jay's wife and caregiver. Now I'm very grateful they are preserved as a resource during times of trouble. As you juggle the physical and emotional challenges of being a caregiver or caring supporter, it is my prayer that this book will provide encouragement, compassion, affirmation and hope. God will meet you right were you are, and remain beside you every step of the way. Join Him where He is already at work. He will equip you to do all that you need to accomplish, just as He led me through my journey to completion, one step at a time.
This is a book about seniors at a health care center and their love of the game of bingo, as told by the author, a senior himself. He tells of his experience as a volunteer bingo caller at the center. His tale begins with how as a retiree he began calling bingo for seniors, and he goes on by giving insight into the health care center itself, it's administrative staff, doctors and nurses, and then he turns to the main theme of the book, that being the authors encounters with seniors, and certain caregivers while calling bingo over a three year period. He chooses a number of these seniors/caregivers with varied personalities, attitudes, moods, and/or temperaments to tell their story of humor, joy, sorrow, grief, and/or sadness. Further noted is the passion seniors have for bingo over all other activities, and the distractions they often face, restricting their play of the game. A truly telling story of seniors confined to a care center, and of bingo their favorite past time.

Live, Laugh, and Love with Dementia is a story of hope and how our family not only triumphed over the trials and tribulations of caring for a family member with dementia but how we grew closer to one another and to God. It was by far the most difficult yet rewarding time of our lives. I dedicate this book to caregivers everywhere, especially those caring for a family member with this horrible disease. This humorous account depicts the realities of dementia. Our family created coping mechanisms which included laughter because laughter lowers your blood pressure. It was only when Mom died that we realized that her seven year struggle with this terrible disease was meant to teach our family lessons of hope, faith, perseverance and unconditional love. I felt compelled to write this book in order to share the legal and medical information we gleaned along the way. In the end, I believe all we have is family and it is our responsibility to care for one another. Today it is believed that 1 out of 2 baby boomers living to age 85 will have dementia. A minimum of 20% of the net proceeds from this book will go toward Alzheimer's research in the hope of a cure.

Theirs had been a love story, a story of friendship, courtship and marriage, beginning when she was seventeen and he was a dashing Navy officer. It was a fairytale that never ceased-even Alzheimer's couldn't come between them. Phyllis Brown relives this one-of-a-kind love she shared with her husband, Bert, in HELP ME I'm Slipping. According to the Alzheimer's Association, there are many signs of the disease. The author noticed some of these signs in her husband, but she completely ignored them at first. A highly successful businessman, a gentle yet hardworking person who never stopped until he accomplished his goals, Bert was adept at hiding his memory loss. But as soon as it was confirmed that he had Alzheimer's disease, his wife went into action. Phyllis may not have been well-equipped with medical information and guidelines, but she was determined to give all her love and support to make the last years of Bert's life as happy as they could possibly be. HELP ME I'm Slipping follows the author's difficult yet rewarding experience as she helps her husband through the uncharted waters of Alzheimer's. From her journey, she shares lessons that she learned with her readers. In each day, she found something they could enjoy together: moments of love, and even fun and laughter. From strategies for helping her husband maintain his dignity to tips on activities that can be enjoyed daily, this book provides a truly inspiring testament to a love that endures.

This is a book for both caregivers and individuals with Alzheimer's disease. It offers understanding, hope and practical communication tools for Alzheimer's patients. The onset of Alzheimer's brings with it much fear and uncertainty in part because of the loss of left-brain, speech-oriented communication skills; yet the need to communicate is present throughout the course of the disease. The Long Moment explains that much of the breakdown here occurs because caregivers and patients with Alzheimer's are no longer sharing the same world or the same shared sense of time. We take for granted that time has a past, present and future in Earth-reality whereas on planet Altzair (home of the Alzheimer's mind) there is only a present tense. To give Alzheimer's patients a voice the book introduces the idea of the Alzheimer's Cards, simple but powerful tools for individuals to use at all stages of the disease. It also suggests that caregivers fully accept the individual with the disease without evaluation and focus on creating as many quality long moments as possible. It is written in a light, flowing style and illustrated with many cartoons, drawings and stories.
Mothers of children with special needs feel guilt, sadness, and joy simultaneously, which is hard to understand. The mothers in this anthology don't seek pity; instead, they illustrate a complexity of emotions that start with diagnosis, explore care in both early and later years, and invite us to witness the aftermath of too-early deaths of their children. Weaving together essays, poems, and graphics by mothers of children with a wide range of disabilities, Jones and Whiteacre have edited a collection that highlights the challenges and joys of motherhood, exposing both fears and guilty pleasures as mothers explore their relationships with their children, partners, families, caregivers, educators, and the medical community. "An exceptional compilation of writings. This is very important reading for educators, physicians, therapists and anyone who works with families of children with special needs. It will make us laugh and make us cry. And most importantly, it will open our eyes and help us to understand and support more effectively." - Dr. Ina Whitman, Neonatologist, St. Vincent Women's Hospital "In Monday Coffee & Other Stories of Mothering Children with Special Needs, the authors deal with severe hardships generated by children who suffer from debilitating conditions that require constant care and a society in general that grows less inclined - or financially able if you prefer political correctness over truth - to help. They all deal with the guilt, frustration, anger, and pain this struggle causes. Each mother has learned to do that in her own way and has become stronger. What these narratives share with us, as readers, is a sense of hope translated into language through the grace of the actions that created the words. Do humanity a favor and contribute to a worthy enterprise by buying this book. Do yourself a favor by reading it." -Jim McGarrah, award-winning author of A Temporary Sort of Peace and Breakfast at Denny's "'Special parents aren't chosen, they're made' says Ann Bremer in an essay from this remarkable book. Forged is more like it, or annealed perhaps, in a crucible you cannot comprehend unless you, too, have been the parent of a child with Autism, or Down Syndrome, or Cerebral Palsy, or any of the other conditions gathered under the currently-popular sobriquet of 'special needs.' These haunting essays and poems returned me to the early, dark time of my son's birth and diagnosis, before I picked my cautious way, as these authors do, through the ruins of a naive dream of the perfect, golden family back into gratitude for the families that we have. There is no Pollyanna hope in this honest, raw book, but the writing resonates with complex emotions that transcend despair. I came away with empathy and admiration for the fierce faith and fortitude of these mothers, who remind me of those in support groups I joined and founded when my son was in grammar school. While other parents fretted over invitations to parties and college applications, we wondered things like, will my child ever say the word 'Mom'? Who will care for him when I am gone? Who will pay for that? Who will love him? Or, even, will my child still be alive the fall of his or her senior year? And yet, somehow, we go on. We go on by learning to re-frame our visions of perfection. And we go on, too, because we have each other. And we have books like this one, to remind us with power and grace how to endure what we sometimes fear we cannot." -Rebecca Foust, award-winning author of God, Seed, All That Gorgeous Pitiless Song, and a new manuscript shortlisted for the Dorset and Kathryn A. Morton prizes
