Our walking path took us past a large garbage can that sat near an apartment complex. It was a favorite stopping point for dogs and Lucy, our willful terrier, pulled me over to it. I asked, "Oh, do you want to stop and smell the garbage?" Gery didn't appear to be paying attention, but not only was he listening, he decided I was talking to him. He walked resolutely to the garbage can, removed the lid, lowered his head and took an enthusiastic whiff." At age 56, Gery Sutton - a family physician specializing in geriatric medicine - was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. For three years, his wife was his full time caregiver. Because nothing in her background prepared her, she did what most caregivers do-she made it up as she went along. This is her painfully forthright account of the daily challenges, the failures and the unexpected triumphs. She gives realistic advice on caring for someone with dementia. She describes signs of Alzheimer's that she saw and misinterpreted during the months before his diagnosis. She shares the coping mechanisms that helped her survive the illness and death of her husband. Finally, she describes her search for meaning at the bottom of a garbage can.

Living through the experience of a serious diagnosis brings to light the effect illness has on the human perspective. From the search for a heart for a dying husband and father to the reality of the death of a loved one, The Conflict of Caring follows the story of one family's struggle to maneuver the healthcare system and their perception of the people within it. The feeling of loss of control during the time of a stressful illness is told through a personal and touching view point that will generate laughter and tears and the feeling of personally "living through" the situation. As the focus moves from sitting next to the hospital bed to standing over it, the loved one-now nurse brings a new light to the healthcare experience. Poignant stories of the fortitude of patients told through the eyes of the nurse demonstrate a vulnerable yet interconnected relationship between them. All the perceptions of being a family member and nurse are now blurred by being the one affected by an illness. As a patient, the author now brings the story full circle and draws from past experiences to eventually become a participant in life instead of a victim of it. The Conflict of Caring focuses on the human side of health care. Talking, listening, understanding and caring are at the root of this relationship, and these basic needs are as important as any medical ones.

Managing Alzheimer's and Dementia Behaviors...The primary purpose of this booklet is to assist both "Healthcare Professionals" and "Family Caregivers" alike in providing the best care possible to those afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease or dementia of any kind. No less important, however, is another objective; for the information contained within these pages to be a catalyst in creating a better understanding between professional caregivers and the family members of the patients who they are caring for. Communication between these two factions is paramount. It is our hope that this booklet will be read individually or in groups, discussed openly and, after putting some of the tips now learned into practice, discussed again. Always remember, each patient is unique, but at the same time, the disease can often be manageable with the use of common sense, diligence and, most importantly, with love.
A fascinating and hopeful memoir about one woman s journey into family caregiving, and a remarkable, vivid story of the challenges of Alzheimer s care. With the passion of a committed daughter and the fervor of a tireless reporter, Martha Stettinius weaves this compelling story of caregiving for her demented mother with a broad exploration of the causes of Alzheimer's disease, means of treating it, and hopes for preventing it. She shares the lessons she s learned over seven years of caregiving at home, in assisted living, a rehabilitation center, a "memory care" facility for people living with dementia, and a nursing home. One in 8 people over age 65 has Alzheimer's disease, and nearly fifty percent of those over age 85. Appendices share facts that we all need to know, including: how to get a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease; the benefits of early diagnosis; the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease; possible preventive measures; and how to plan for long-term care. The author's greatest gift to readers is that of optimism that caregiving can deepen love, that dementia can be fought, and that families can be strengthened. Her book is appealing, enlightening, and inspiring.
The best weapon in your arsenal is knowledge. The Pathways guidebook is a must-read that facilitates your understanding of these diseases. With life changing know-how, you learn to provide appropriate and loving care while sustaining a healthy quality of life. Saving you time, money and energy.
Most of us (doctors included) have a limited understanding of the ways health care has changed during the last half century...the progress and struggles, the influence of for-profit corporations, and the rising costs. Why did Obama choose the approach so many are attacking? Will Alzheimer's and its costs overwhelm us? How do we die, and why are our final days so pricey? What is cancer and how are we dealing with it? What about emergency care, sudden death, heart attacks, and strokes? Are transfusions safe? How far have transplants come and where are we heading? What is Type Two Diabetes and what can be done about the epidemic? Where do the for-profit hospitals fit in to our current system? Are the excesses of big pharma appropriate and necessary? What about the enormous cost of medical education? What does the future hold for the miracles of the last 60 years? - New knees and hips - Surgery performed through tiny slits in the skin - Video endoscopes exploring the inside of the gut - Radiologists stretching arteries and biopsying abnormalities deep in the body...

Few experiences stir the emotions and throw a person into crisis as illness does. If affects not only the body but also the spirit and soul. Illness is about life and death, fear and hope, love and conflict, spirit and body. And yet, the healthcare system is not structured around these considerations--our doctors and other medical professionals are not trained to deal with the whole person. Care of the Soul In Medicine is Moore's manifesto about the future of healthcare. In this new vision of care, Moore speaks to the importance of healing a person rather than simply treating a body. He gives advice to both healthcare providers and patients for maintaining dignity and humanity. He provides spiritual guidance for dealing with feelings of mortality and threat, encouraging patients to not only take an active part in healing but also to view illness as a positive passage to new awareness. While we don't fully understand the extent to which healing depends on attitude; it has been shown that healing needs to focus on more than the body. The future of medicine is not only in new technical developments and research discoveries; it is also in appreciating the state of soul and spirit in illness. |
