"When a Loved One at Home has Dementia" is a guide to providing care at home for family members suffering from dementia and related disorders. Dr. Francis writes in easy to understand language describing dementia and it's symptoms, including aphasia and other expressive disorders, as well as many common behavior difficulties people suffering from dementia often experience. Dr. Francis discusses how to manage communication issues as well as how to navigate end-of-life decisions and how to understand options like hospice and palliative care, and the many facilities available to provide care for your loved one. A comprehensive resource list is included to make the information provided accessible for most readers and their families.
Paralyzed as the result of a medical error and fighting for a life that was statistically deemed inconceivable. It was in 2007 Keith J McCormick was presented with The Kessler Institute's Triumph Of The Human Spirit Award In essence I could not think of a better person to have written this book.
Most of us (doctors included) have a limited understanding of the ways health care has changed during the last half century...the progress and struggles, the influence of for-profit corporations, and the rising costs. Why did Obama choose the approach so many are attacking? Will Alzheimer's and its costs overwhelm us? How do we die, and why are our final days so pricey? What is cancer and how are we dealing with it? What about emergency care, sudden death, heart attacks, and strokes? Are transfusions safe? How far have transplants come and where are we heading? What is Type Two Diabetes and what can be done about the epidemic? Where do the for-profit hospitals fit in to our current system? Are the excesses of big pharma appropriate and necessary? What about the enormous cost of medical education? What does the future hold for the miracles of the last 60 years? - New knees and hips - Surgery performed through tiny slits in the skin - Video endoscopes exploring the inside of the gut - Radiologists stretching arteries and biopsying abnormalities deep in the body...
'A Journey Through Cancer' takes you on the path walked by the author and her husband as they dealt with a rare form of cancer. Through their struggles and battle, she has written their story in hopes that others may find hope and encouragement when facing cancer. She addresses the obstacles they have faced and has included how they learned to deal and cope with each one. Where do you go for help and support? How do you handle the side effects of chemotherapy? How do you handle the information overload? How can you be an advocate for your loved one? The reader will find ways to eliminate nausea and vomiting, weight loss, loss of appetite, mood swings, and more...including recipes to encourage weight gain.

Most families have "skeletons" in the closet. For my wife's family, there was a Monster, a type of dementia that robs loving, intelligent individuals of everything-their dignity, their personality, their memory, their finances, and their minds. The "skeletons" are the remains of loved ones after the Monster has finished with them. The family members who are not devoured by this beast are, even so, crippled and maimed by its effects on their loved ones.Little did I know when Evelyn and I married in 1970 that this "Jabberwock" would come a'calling on us. My wife at age 60 is now vastly gone, with no memory of her children, or me, or our life together. To our horror, one of our children has tested positive for the autosomal dominant (inherited) gene that is the pathway for the dementia Monster's entrance. We pray for a cure.Dementia: The Monster Within is not an extensive explanation of dementia, although we show some of the science involved to help give understanding. It is first and foremost the story of our family, along with the stories of a few others who have met the Monster. Our experiences may be helpful in recognizing the initial assault. This book also provides a framework of essential steps necessary to prepare both caregiver and loved one for their futures. Most importantly, if you have been affected by this Monster, you should understand that you are not alone in your struggle. There is an enormous responsibility in giving balance when sharing hope of curing these diseases. It would be unconscionable to offer false hope. Yet, there is every reason to have hope. As we write, clinical trials are being conducted for treatments, but each individual needs to be realistic-not every disease will be "cured" before causing harm to some of our loved ones. Tens of thousands of scientists in hundreds of research facilities around the world are making discoveries about dementia almost daily. Some of these discoveries will lead to treatments, and some will lead to cures of some of the dementias. This enormous investment in research will pay off with dynamic discoveries. We cannot give up hope that the future holds a way to ... SLAY THE MONSTER

Written by a caregiver who lost his wife to cancer. He hopes this book of practical, daily tools that he used will help someone else in a similar circumstance.
The autobiography by the husband of a brain cancer patient who has become his wife's full time caregiver. The pathos and joys of an average American couple are exquisitely detailed and presented with humor, love and hope. The book includes references to doctors, treatments, friendship, family, sex, politics, religion, the meaning of marriage and the Grateful Dead. The book also includes a new section, The Tenth Year detailing the continuing story and updating Debbie's journey. Here's all Kindle reviews as of March 18, 2012. 5 stars Dawn K Lewis This book was so captivating that I finished it in a day. I could not put it down. Having been a caregiver, it helped to read someone else's account of the day to day struggles one goes through and the love story contained within the autobiography is one of true dedication and commitment. 5 stars Thomas T. Grant I read this with tears in my eyes time and time again, both from laughing and crying. I felt like a welcome house guest, but powerless to be helpful with their situation yet joyful to be along for the ride. A wonderful and devastating account of life through it's highest highs and lowest lows. Way beyond worth it 5 stars annajjj I finished this book with tears in my eyes and knowing I will reread this book and keep Jeff and Debbie in my thoughts for years to come. What a wonderful inspirational story of love, loyalty and determination. It was also particularly interesting, as an Australian who enjoys an amazingly supportive medical system, to read about the challenges faced by Americans going through situations that require ongoing medical support. It made me feel incredibly grateful for our system. 5 stars AHB Jeff writes of the nine long years that he and his wife, Debbie, have survived her brain cancer. The book is both touching and informative. The perserverance they both have shown is remarkable, and an inspiration for anyone going through a similar situation. It also served as a reminder to me to appreciate each effortless step I take. Mr. Block's book reads easily, though clearly describing an incredibly difficult journey. 5 stars tbott This book truly moved me on several occasions. I enjoyed the way the piece jumps from the present to the past in different chapters. A true account of true love, and devotion above and beyond. 5 stars RosaSharon I agree with all that the other reviewers have said. These two young people have had more than their share of trials. I hope that Mr. Block continues writing- either fiction or non-fiction as I think that he is very skilled with words. I sincerely give this book five stars for the book touched my heart, and for me, that is why I read. 5 stars MZ This book had the best first chapter I have ever read. I felt as if I was sitting in the kitchen with Jeff as he sits at the keyboard, coffee cup in hand, trying to be as quiet as possible so as not to disturb Debbie...periodically listening for her breathing. A truly compelling and moving story. I actually went back to re-read the first chapter after I finished the book. Who does that? This is truly one of the best things I have read in a long time. 5 stars Brenda Reece This is a poignant and personal story told by a devoted husband who put his life on hold to care for his loving wife. Jeff was in his forties when he learned that the love of his life, Debbie, had brain cancer. The book's title, "Nine Years After," makes reference to the time period between his wife's diagnosis and the time he began writing about it. In this powerful and inspirational book, Jeff chronicles his typical days as a caregiver while sharing his inner most thoughts and feelings with us. This truly is a must read book. 4.0 stars Penelope Sebastian Read it in one afternoon and was amazed at how easily it read. Thank you, Mr Block, for sharing your experiences. Thank you for expressing the love, devotion and stress of enduring so carefully.
This is a book about seniors at a health care center and their love of the game of bingo, as told by the author, a senior himself. He tells of his experience as a volunteer bingo caller at the center. His tale begins with how as a retiree he began calling bingo for seniors, and he goes on by giving insight into the health care center itself, it's administrative staff, doctors and nurses, and then he turns to the main theme of the book, that being the authors encounters with seniors, and certain caregivers while calling bingo over a three year period. He chooses a number of these seniors/caregivers with varied personalities, attitudes, moods, and/or temperaments to tell their story of humor, joy, sorrow, grief, and/or sadness. Further noted is the passion seniors have for bingo over all other activities, and the distractions they often face, restricting their play of the game. A truly telling story of seniors confined to a care center, and of bingo their favorite past time.

The true story of a middle-aged woman being unexpectedly diagnosed with a young person's disease: multiple sclerosis. The journey to diagnosis and the reality of the treatment brought a premature end to her career as a public school teacher. Life in "the sandwich generation" of adults caring for both their elder parents and their children, while balancing full time employment, is discussed with gentle empathy. The difficult economics and the changes in family responsibilities are also a part of this story. The consistent, caring support of family and friends and a mutual respect between patient and doctors is essential in living with a chronic condition such as Multiple Sclerosis.
