Conventional coping strategies can be pushed to their limits when
people find themselves in situations of suffering, illness, and
dying. Moved beyond their everyday consciousness, individuals often
have spiritual experiences of grace and encounters with the
transcendent or the divine. The author shows how care providers can
support patients in their suffering and how they can recognize
patients' spiritual experiences. Explaining different types of
experiences of transcendence such as seeing angels or feelings of
otherness and presence, this book will be of valuable use to
professionals working in palliative and spiritual care, such as
spiritual caregivers, therapists, nurses, and physicians. The book
entails a new approach to spiritual care which opens a space of
hope wherein grace may happen even amid pain, suffering, illness
and dying.
Qigong is the centuries-old practice of moving vital energy (Qi)
through the channels of the body, known as meridians, to promote
vitality and health. Stephen Rath details current research and
Traditional Chinese Medicine theory to show how Qigong practice can
support cognitive functioning, as well as emotional and physical
wellbeing, in people with dementia. Qigong for Wellbeing in
Dementia and Aging presents a set of accessible Qigong exercises
and breathing techniques adapted specifically for older people who
may be frail or have limited mobility, which address specific
symptoms associated with dementia. These include exercises for the
hands and feet, exercises for releasing emotions through the Five
Animal Sounds, seated exercises, and facial exercises. The
exercises, contributed by the Natural Healing Research Foundation
from their Senior Exercise Class in Hawaii, are presented with
clear explanatory illustrations. The final part of the book
describes the Chinese understanding of nutrition as an essential
underpinning of good health into old age, and provides
health-giving food and drink recipes for people with dementia based
on these principles. There is also a helpful chapter on practicing
Qigong to protect against caregiver burnout. This will be an
invaluable book for care professionals, nurses, activity
coordinators, and physical therapists, as well as people with
dementia and their families.

Hospital systems throughout the developed world are undergoing
waves of reform which seek to address multiple challenges of
intensifying acuity, such as population ageing, technological
advance, heightened expectations on the part of increasingly
informed patients, the reduction of public spending deficits and
the specialisation of staff, especially nurses, as well as the
difficulty in establishing appropriate incentives for change and
improved performance. Within such a context, the purpose of this
book is to analyse the interaction between the nursing professions
and hospital institutions in France and Japan, taking as its
starting point the conviction that comparative analysis of
empirical reality in each of these countries will provide new
insights into the transformations currently taking place. To that
end, the material in this study has been contributed by an
international, interdisciplinary team of experts, combining
economic, sociological, political and historical perspectives,
which are brought to bear upon evidence from original research
carried out in both countries. The findings reveal that the
relationship between the nursing profession and hospital structures
in Japan is characterised by the predominance of a domestic logic,
rooted in dependence upon the institution and the promotion of
supposedly "feminine" qualities, in sharp contrast with the French
situation, where industrial and professional logics prevail,
entailing specialisation, independent initiative and increasing
workloads. From this perspective, the future development of the
nursing profession in Japan is inextricably linked to the forms
taken by the process of women's emancipation, whereas in France, it
is the evolution of hospital structures, of the position of nurses
in the healthcare system and of the division of labour within the
world of medicine which emerge as the determining factors. In order
to highlight French and Japanese particularities for the Anglophone
reader, the book also features numerous socio-historical points of
comparison with developments in the United Kingdom.
