Working with Families in the Era of HIV/AIDS (Hardcover): Willo Pequegnat, Jose Szapocznik Working with Families in the Era of HIV/AIDS (Hardcover)
Willo Pequegnat, Jose Szapocznik
R3,876 Discovery Miles 38 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The purpose of this book is to encourage professionals to become involved in family-oriented services to prevent the spread of HIV and its consequences and to provide examples of strategies for mobilizing family resources in the prevention and adaptation to HIV and AIDS. The members of the NIMH Consortium on Families and HIV/AIDS have prepared these chapters building on their research and practice experience. Together some of the nation?s most capable behavioral prevention and treatment scientists have developed these prevention programs based on sound scientific principles and are currently testing them in rigorous controlled trials in communities across the country. While these interventions have not yet been demonstrated to be effective, they have received rigorous peer review by independent scientists conducted under the auspices of the NIMH, and were considered worthy of research support. This book focuses on populations were HIV infection is now quickly spreading, and yet relatively little is know about family interventions with these populations. The prevention programs address the spectrum of programs to prevent the spread of HIV and its consequences. The HIV prevention programs are intended to promote greater responsibility in general, and thus encourage healthier lifestyles with respect to drug and sexual behavior among family members. Although not exclusively, a large proportion of the programs presented in this book were designed for African American populations and address the Prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS and its consequences. With that caveat, however, it should be noted that these interventions can also be adapted for use with other cultural groups, other chronic diseases, STDs and multiple family configurations.

How to Be a Friend to a Friend Who's Sick (Paperback, First Trade Paper Edition): Letty Pogrebin How to Be a Friend to a Friend Who's Sick (Paperback, First Trade Paper Edition)
Letty Pogrebin
R399 R376 Discovery Miles 3 760 Save R23 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Everyone knows someone who's sick or suffering. Yet when a friend or relative is under duress many of us feel uncertain about how to cope.
Throughout her recent bout with breast cancer, Letty Cottin Pogrebin became fascinated by her friends' and family's diverse reactions to her and her illness: how awkwardly some of them behaved; how some misspoke or misinterpreted her needs; and how wonderful it was when people read her right. She began talking to her fellow patients and dozens of other veterans of serious illness, seeking to discover what sick people wished their friends knew about how best to comfort, help, and even simply talk to them.
Now Pogrebin has distilled their collective stories and opinions into this wide-ranging compendium of pragmatic guidance and usable wisdom. Her advice is always infused with sensitivity, warmth, and humor. It is embedded in candid stories from her own and others' journeys, and their sometimes imperfect interactions with well-meaning friends. "How to Be a Friend to a Friend Who's Sick" is an invaluable guidebook for anyone hoping to rise to the challenges of this most important and demanding passage of friendship.

Evidence-Based Practice - A Critical Appraisal (Paperback): L Trinder Evidence-Based Practice - A Critical Appraisal (Paperback)
L Trinder
R1,602 Discovery Miles 16 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Few concepts can have achieved the status of unchallengeable common-sense in such a short space of time, and across such a broad range of professional activity, as evidence-based practice.

Evidence-Based Practice: A Critical Appraisal stands back from the flurry of excitement and activity that has accompanied the development of evidence-based practice. This is the first text to provide a critical appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of evidence-based practice, weighing the arguments of both advocates and opponents of the approach. It is also the first text to examine the concept of evidence-based practice as a cross-disciplinary phenomenon, looking at how and why evidence-based practice has spread beyond acute medicine and considers the relevance of the approach for other disciplines. This book also contains an introduction to the basic concepts and terminology of evidence-based practice for those who are less familiar with the approach.

Key features:

Covers evidence-based practice in primary care, mental health, public health, nursing, social work and probation, education and human resource management.
Considers what evidence-based practice is and why it has developed
Includes a team of internationally renowned contributors, including John Muir- Gray and Martyn Hammersley

Collaborative Care - Interprofessional, Interagency and Interperson 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition): S Hornby Collaborative Care - Interprofessional, Interagency and Interperson 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
S Hornby
R1,627 Discovery Miles 16 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Practitioners of all professions recognize the need and importance of collaboration, yet many find it far from easy to achieve. This book provides insights and understandings into the complexities of collaborative relationships so that individuals and groups can take constructive action to detect hindrances and attempt to overcome them.

The heightened interest in new ways of working together in health and social care has merited a new edition of this excellent text. Four new contributors have enlarged on the pioneering work of the late Sally Hornby, adding new material on collaborative relationships within organizational hierarchies of health and social care. Key themes such as the fight for resources, the tendency of professionals to behave defensively towards their clients, their departments and their resources, and the use of individual and group coping mechanisms are revisited. The new focus adds reflections on the effects of the professional and organizational contexts to these issues and provides new perspectives on the effectiveness of helping relationships in the year 2000 and beyond.
